I have been tossing this idea around in my head for about a year and would really appreciate some feedback.

If I were to go through with this, there are several differences I would implement from the mock-up picture below:

-Those wings are off some Hellboy II toy, I would find different wings, but hopefully be able to achieve an eerie-Tzeentch look to them. I've also thought about giving him two sets of wings, one set leathery (like a DP's) and the other feathered.

-The color scheme would be different, I like the idea of it being darker in color tone than your average Lord of Change, but don't want the silver/black combo the GW nightbringer has going on. I would probably do blue hues on the robes and such with some Chaos Icon's in gold or some other contrasting color.

-I would convert the scythe or sickle into more of a traditional staff(with lots of tzeentch-like qualities)

-I would also, obviously ditch all the scarabs the Nightbringer comes with.

Has anyone seen this type of conversion I could draw some more inspiration from?
And more importantly, what do you guys think of it? Is it kinda cool/creepy take on a Lord of Change or is it lame?

Wow, it looks way creepier than the usual Lords of Change around...

Maybe the new Tzeentch icon from the Horror kit would be useful as a staff?

I think it's awesome! The only visible part of the face being the beak adds to the creepyness.

Thanks, fellas!

I've had lots of concept sketches and thoughts towards how to do the staff, but didn't occur to me to use that new Horror standard top. I'm not entirely opposed to keeping the blade and warping flesh and bits around the top of it to give the impression that it's alive or mutating.

Rose_Mountainz, I think the hood/beak combo def adds to the creep factor

Glad you guys like it.

Very cool idea. Like the looks of it so far but i think you should change the beak. Shorter maybe? Or curved?

Add another thumbs up from me. The idea is great, and very original.

This also gives you a great chance to flex your painting muscles. All that cloth could be trimmed with gold, or lined, or patterned in any number of ways. Freehand opportunities abound. Challenge yourself!

I like the idea of the crow/stork beak, but I think its a bit too long in the concept pick.

Definately nice and creepy looking. I'd say go for it.

Hello, all. Hope everyone made it through the Holiday season well. I thought you all would be interested to know that on Friday I purchased my Nightbringer. I've also done a little research on those particular Hellboy Wings and they definately won't work Each wing is about 8" long and a Nightbringer with a 16" wingspan just won't do. It's unfortunate, as I really like the look of those. But regardless, this project will continue. I am currently in the process of finishing some individual mini's (I have about 2.5 to paint) but, once those are done this will be where all my focus is. I will periodically mix it up and work on this conversion over the course of my other projects and will be posting my efforts here.
THANKS to everyone who commented on my idea. The beak will involve some trial and error to get the dimensions right. But I've thought about this project for long enough that I'm not going to just rush through it. I was also not aware that the nightbringers hands merge with his scythe and tabard. This will cause a bump in my plans as I'm not sure if I'll be able to make his right hand conjuring flames. But, we'll see.
Todeswind, feel free to copy this idea. I'm glad you like it.

So, as I wrap up some of my other works, this little project draws closer and closer to fruition.

As I've said, I have already purchased the Nightbringer, but now I'm kind of stuck with what wings I want to use. The one's in that mock-up won't work with their 16" wingspan, so I've turned to GW to see what they have available.

I have some older nid gargoyle wings I could use, but I fear they may be too small. So, here is what I believe my options to be:

Tzeentch wings:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1110162&rootCatGameStyle=
Which I think are kinda bland

Eagle wings:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1140269&rootCatGameStyle=
Stick with the feathers and keep the "bird" motif. I like the pose of these wings better than the Tzeetch ones, though

Bloodthirster wings:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1110160&rootCatGameStyle=
I like the "orbs" in the tips and joints as I could make them eyes for The Changer to see all possible outcomes, but I'm not sure if I want leathery wings.

Please let me know what the Dakkites want. I'm totally open to suggestions and they do NOT need to be GW parts.
Also, I've been contemplating how to craft his beak. I'm guessing I'll go with plasticard, but I'm open to suggestions on the beak, as well.
Thanks for looking!

If you are still thinking about using two sets of wings, I think the eagle wings and the bloodthirster wings would go well together, the eagle wings on top.

I think this is a great idea. The mock-up pic is a very cool concept. Good luck finding all the bits for it.

I think you may be on to something, TGG. I do like the idea of the two different sets of wings, as it adds to the "change" factor and I like how the wings would be set in different positions so that they are independant from one another. It may totally work. I'd have to figure a way to fasten them to his back seamlessly, but at this point I'm not going to let that get in my way. Gonna have to scour the internet to find em though. Don't really want to drop 40 bones on two sets of wings. Thanks GW.

The 2 different sets of wings is a good idea but I don't think you should use blood thirster wings. I would go with the tzeentch wings on top then the eagle wings as they would be smaller. I don't think "fleshy" wings fit the tzeentch ascetic very well. They are birds for the most part and ghosts

Personally I really like the hellboy wings, the eyes in them have a definite tzeentch feel. As for having two sets of wings, I think it would look better if both of the wing sets were the same rather than different, but that's just my opinion.

That aside, I really like the concept, I think the normal lords of change models have too much of a gangly look to them that is more odd than creepy. Yours on the other hand is altogether more disturbing- and therefore excellent.

@sum1thtdiesalot: Thanks for the feedback, I know what you mean about the aesthetic, I'm just so over grandpa-vulture that I'm personally ready for something fresh for the Lord of Change. But I'm beginning to think there's something that just won't work when you add a beak and leathery, not feathered, wings.

@Reanimator:I wish those hellboy wings would work they look great but they're too huge. :( I totally agree with you on the look of the GW Lord of Change. Way too gangly. Thanks for your opinions!

hmm maybe. I'm not that confident in my GS skills but I could just practice to get the eyes the way I would want. I'm not sure how to sculpt them between or with the feathers and not have it look goofy, but I'll be thinking about it.

Well, boys and girls, I'm glad to say that this little project has finally begun! Construction of the overall Nightbringer model has been cleaned up and the body and dressing have been pinned and assembled. I've been on the phone with GW customer service and am anxiously awaiting their call back to get me size dimensions on the Wood Elf GE Wings referenced above. I've also completed his staff, using bits from the Tzeentch banner topper that comes with the CSM box set, some GS, and the original Nightbringer's scythe. I'll post pics soon (this afternoon/evening).

I'm pretty excited about this project and although, from now until it's fully painted and based, it's going to take a while, it will be seen through to its completion. Thanks for looking. Pics to come real soon.

Got my pics uploaded,

This is one side of the staff, and actually will be facing the back of the model.

This is the side of the staff facing the front, The sides have eyes sculpted into them, the cross bar is from one of two dangly bits off the CSM banner top:

Now my challenge, aside from tidying up that staff and maybe adding more too it, is finding a suitable beak. The space under the cowl/hood is just smaller than 1/8th of an inch. I've tried using thin plasticard, but am wondering if I should get some plastic tubing, cut it to shape and add from the curvature of the tube. I'm totally open to suggestions on it.
There's just not a whole lot of space to work with in there, but I'll get it eventually.

Thanks for looking

I know it's been a while since I've been able to work on this post (or anything painting related). However, I have managed to get some work done. As I've said before, I'm not terribly confident in my GS skills so after quite some time molding/shaping/sculpting I've got a suitable beak to work with. The wings I've chosen to go with have been ordered and should be here in the next couple days. I'm getting pretty eager to get some paint on this demon as I'm starting to like where it's headed.
As always, I'm open to new ideas so don't refrain from any ideas, opinions, comments or criticisms that you have.

I know it doesn't seem like a whole lot of progress, but I have been ridiculously busy with work and I'm just now getting back to my painting station.
Thanks for looking!

I love the concept, can't wait to see it finished.

I think the beak may be a little much, though. Perhaps making it more like a bird-of-prey style curved beak, like some of the existing Tzeentch range? Your call, I guess. Otherwise, looking good!

Great idea, but the beak is too much, maybe a much smaller one, like he has a head and face but only is long beak is visible.

Maybe like this,

Very iconic.
