Prices aren't too bad if you break it down on a per head basis... but that's still a massive jump up from the zero cost it is..sorry, was.

From looking over White Dwarves over the past few years it does seem more and more of the weekends are being taken up.

I suppose this kinda of system would be inevitable once it became apparent this was happening.

Although I don't begrudge them charging, it is their space after all, and I'd imagine its getting to the point demand for space is over running capicity.

With a financial commitment, folks are less likely to skip last minute etc, plus it means everyone is on a equal footing regarding booking the space.

Price i think are actually really good...

Look at 40 tables for one day, If you charge £10 for 80 people to play, thats £600 profit to spend on prizes/keep as profit....

Those are fabulous prices compared to anything I could get over here in the states, not even considering that you get gaming tables, and scenery.

I can easily see why they are doing it. If it was free all the time, you'd be constantly booked, with people running events of sometimes dubious quality, and constant arguements and complaints over who got to use it.

I wish I could find anything in Vegas for less than 3 times that price.

I was always under the impression that you would have to pay to have the catering.

Anyway those prices aren't too bad. For example the Open War event in October had in total 122 players over 3 systems (WFB, 40K, & Epic) which puts us in the 58 - 64 table area. As it was a one day event that's £330 divided by 122 players, which makes it £2.71 (rounding up) which isn't too bad. It's a big investment to start with but I don't think the prices are bad at all (although compaired to free it's disgusting! )

£3.75 a head for a weekends gaming on boards with deacent scenary is a steal! If you charged £5 a head you'd have £100 profit for prizes. It only seems like a lot of money because they are talking about 40 tables.

Are you able to walk in at all and just play on (or reserve) a single table? If I was ever over there I would love to do just that and I'm not sure what the format would be like for trying to use a single table.

AFAIK yes, you can still just turn up and play -- subject to there being an event that has X number of tables booked out of course. And even at big events like the old UK GTs there were a few -- 12-20 ish spare/unused tables for people just to turn up and play on.

Which is nice.

I believe this is really just for larger get togethers -- bit like the Silver Sorceress I guess..? -- and the like.

One of the best things you can do is phone and book some of the special tables -- for example in Feb. you can phone and book to play on the specially made "Island of Blood" table that they used in the BIG battle report in WD. They've got/had a few really sweet FW fortress tables and the like as well, all very nice.

I've sent an email to clarify a few points, I'll holler as/when/if I hear more.

Well, this is the crux of it. Although the prices are very good if you're doing a 80 person tournament, what if you're doing something Silver Sorcerer sized? 15-20 people off the interweb meeting up for a weekend of gaming. Would they just allow us to come and play, or do we have to book out the minimum 40 tables for £300 per weekend?

yes and for that it is very good. When I go to WHW for a tournament, I always try to go a day early just turn up and play some practice games.

I think this is a real shame, WHW was one of GW's shiny 'for the hobby... not for profit' bits. They provided a wonderful place we could play their games with a large group of buddies (/their customers) for free.
Plus every time I've gone I've always spent allot of money on new product/beer/food anyway... so they are still making money.

But now a group of 12 pals and want to do a mini weekend tournament there? £300!
That's a extra £25 each? which while not killer, is still extra on top of transport/hotel/food...

I think if they are going to charge it shouldn't be tiered.
I think it should have a flat rate of £4 per table per day...

how many tables do you want?
1 table for a game today - "that will be £4 please"
10 for two days -"£80 please"
40 for two days -"£320 please"

To be honest this will make costing the event easier for a tournament organiser, regardless of interest.
With this three tiered system a organiser has to either work out costs closer to the event once he knows the numbers or guess and over charge.
both of which I think will possibly make some people uninterested.

Also I'd like to see some of the booking fee returned into the bigger tournaments prize support - vouchers or 'WHW event' only merchandise.

Maelstrom games isn't that far from WHW. you can book events there for free they also have 40 tables and a bar. I'd prefer to see the next SIlver Sorcerer held there and have £300 in the prize fund.
Right now if we hold the next tournament at WHW I see it costing more with less people turning up.

Panic...

Part of a reply I had from GW regarding this :

Just so you know, the charges are aimed at larger bookings, as you suggested, and we will be clarifying the process for smaller groups, as we certainly want as many people as possible using our gaming hall to continue enjoying their Games Workshop hobby. I am also going to make it clear as to what size groups will count for the hire charges.

.which strikes me as good news really then, and reassuring for people/forums planning smaller, less formal get togethers.

,, and they do listen it seems eh ?

5 - 10 tables is free, and the small print reveals a lower deposit for 11-20 tables as well.

Good for them, I'm glad that the current events team/WW management are showing themselves willing to listen customers -- see the amicably resolved sitaution with the 1St Company vets and the increase in point sizes for the UK Throne of Skulls.
