Update 4/14/13:

I'm making my return into the hobby and ready to make a long needed progress post. Here's my Ultramarine army so far, hopefully I've gotten better than I was years ago when I painted the models already in this blog. So anyways, here's a few before and after shots for you guys/gals. Let me know what you think.

Then:

Now:

Jump Pack Chaplain

Sternguard Sergeant

Tactical Marines

Command Squad + Other Misc. Models

Fix the base, and it will look truly exceptional (especially for a first try)!

Yes I'm sure this is the result of watching several "how to" videos and staring at gw's tac squad pic for a fairly long time (and having it pulled up on my computer as I paint as a constant reminder of "it should look like this") lol.

Wow! Awesome start. That you even tried highlighting is impressive. Those are SOOOO much better than my first figures. To be honest, they are way better than about my first 100 figures

Tried some freehanding on the tac arrows and the ultramarines symbol. Not extremely happy with them, but its a first attempt after all, anyways here they are:

Also I've applied a gloss varnish to them, going to go over them with a matte varnish for the next update

(the "U" on the mini in the left I've made dip a bit more so covers more of the lower portion of the shoulder pad near the gold trim)

C&C welcome

A few helpful tips if I may....
Try drawing your freehand designs in first with a pencil. It really helps. There are a few guides online that show cool shortcuts to popular designs like the Ultramarine symbol and the black Templar cross, even on the gw site.

Good first attempt at Highlighting too. Where you want to go from there is cleaning up the edges of the highlights. You should try "erasing" the edges of the highlights with the base color, it will let you get the highlight smaller and closer to the edge of the surface..

Great start, keep it up.

So...after a break (long story short school can suck) I finally finished up my models by painting their pouches, purity seals, and did their bases. Also should mention, these are my first attempts at basing too haha

The only mini I did not do all of the painting on was the standard bearer, he was bought via ebay and the only things I've done on him are his helmet's gold accents, purity seals, and the basing.

C & C appreciated
