Hey there,
This is my first shot at playing the game, although I've owned a copy of the rules for about 10 years. I plan on playing Tau in CT. First I'd like to say hello.
Hello.
Next, is there a new Tau codex coming out that will greatly affect they way I should build a small army?

Thanks

Beast

Hey
Welcome to Dakka!
It isn't confirmed that Tau will be getting a new codex, but there are rumours that they will be done fairly soon (there are 2 or 3 others that are likely to come before it though). But all of this is just what I've seen in the news & rumours section, so don't assume its right

Thanks guys! So Im good with my 3rd edition Tau codex or should I get a 4th edition codex? Is there a big difference between the two?

You'll need the most up to date one if you want to play in most places. From my experience I can old get away with playing an outdated codex with friends when I check with them in advance.

Runnin up on ya.

Welcome to Dakka.

Yeah, you'll want to get the 4th edition codex and then the FAQ/Errata off of GWs website.

Do you already have an army or about to start out?

Welcome to Dakkadakka!
If you’re looking for tactics or want some suggestions start a new thread in an appropriate section the people there will be more likely to answer your questions. I can't I never have nor will play Tau.

Guilliman and the Ultramarines are like Manchester United, everyone hates them because they are so awesome!

Runnin up on ya.

For a new Tau player, I'd suggest a battleforce which whill give you a viable 750 point-ish force. Later you'll need to add more as you play and find out what works for you but in general, I'd suggest the following shopping list (not all at once of course):

- A box or two of firewarriors (leave the shoulderpads off and use carbines and you can make pathfinders out of them)
- 2 more devilfish
- 2 skyray kits (as they also have all the bits for hammerheads)
- 3 broadsides
- 8 kroot hounds (you can convert fantasy chaos hounds if you have the will and inclination)
- 6-9 more crisis suits
- more kroot, if you like them, but avoid the krootox for now as the current rules really hamstring them.
- 3 pirahna (more if you like them because they can be in units of 5).

Getting this stuff, over time, will easily provide you a 2500-3000 pt army.

Anyway, like I said at the beginning, start off with the battleforce and see what you like and then just build from there. Tau are all about unit synergy and your play style will affect what works for you; moreso than more strategically forgiving armies like ultramarines.

Good luck!

I've starting putting together an army, but because I'm painting as I go, I'm taking it slow.
For far I have:
30 Firewarriors
12 Kroot
Whats the next step to get to 500?
Thanks,
~Beast~

Welcome to Dakka
Well... you need a HQ choice for the army to be playable, you have your two manditory troop choices (you really have 3-4 with how many fire warriors) So i would pick up a commander suit!

Welcome to Dakka,
I advise 2 teams of at least 6 pathfinders giving you a good force multiplier, they don't need their devilfishes so have firewarriors jump into them. These can then hop off to objectives
