Ah, fair point. I suppose I meant it more from a 'selling products within the same suite' marketing approach than a fluff perspective - though again Night Haunt seems to work pretty well as its own collective, as designed I'm sure. Also I'm not too sad that she isn't just another copy-pasta skull pony rider (though I love me some skull pony!)

WarhamCommun tells me the BRB has this stuff:

– Allegiance abilities for Order, Chaos, Death and Destruction, including artefacts and command traits.

– Realm of Battle rules for seven of the Mortal Realms, each with their own tactical opportunities and challenges including unique spells, realmscape features, command traits and more.

Which I have to assume is not reprinted in the GHB? I'm not super interested in the realm tweaks (and hope / assume they won't feature heavily in matched play), but the first bullet seems important, especially as I'm playing Gutbusters without our own book.

Finally, for every kind of gamer, the General’s Handbook 2018 contains a new set of rules for summoning for every army that used it before, as well as allegiance abilities for every faction that was featured last year – for reference, that’s:

Darkling Covens
Dispossessed
Free Peoples
Fyreslayers
Seraphon
Wanderers
Brayherds
Slaanesh
Slaves to Darkness
Skaven Pestilens
Skaven Skryre
Flesh-eater Courts
Ironjawz

Part toolbox, part guide to matched play, all awesome – this year’s General’s Handbook is a must-have for all warlords.

I couldn't find any specific mention of the Core Book giving stuff but if I had to guess, it will be the same stuff as in 2017(which they said is being put in with 2018 as well).

If we could spoiler images of that size...

At any rate, it's not a matter of attitude in this case. The map on the left was for the purposes of a story arc that took place in a very specific region. Putting out a huge map of the realm where the land in that campaign was a tiny spot would have been a joke, not the other way around.

Sorry about that. I thought it was going to be resized like the original was done. I know it's too late, but I put spoilers in it now.

I'm also getting a Day of the Dead vibe. I think she's perfect for what she's supposed to represent. I'm definitely buying her, but I I'm thinking a darker paint scheme more like the ghost in "Mama" rather than the sparkly-glowy scheme you usually see.

They're colored plastic. The unboxing video GW did today(which ended up mostly focusing on painted versions ) showed off the sprues for a bit.

Thanks for the correction Kanluwen. I didn't see no video from GW today. Will see if I can find it now.

I was kinda 'eh' on Nighthaunts as an army for myself but this really makes me want to do a day of the dead themed one...

But then if Blood Knights are indeed getting a points cut it would be a good time to be hip and start Soulblight allegiance before it gets cool.

The Mortarch is incredible. She’s remarkably subdued for a huge centrepiece GW model, lots of blank space and her appearance isn’t nearly as ostentatious as other big kits. Because of this she has an absolutely striking silhouette and the core of her design elements aren’t smothered by knick-knacks and decorative elements. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her face and crown instead of flitting all around looking for a place to settle. The only thing I’m not loving are the roses, although to be fair they are placed in such a way that your eyes will naturally follow them up her body towards, again, her face and crown. Other than that, what an absolute home run, I tip my hat to the designer for creating something extraordinary.

I can see painters having a lot of fun with her; sometimes low detail can work wonders as it leaves more room for creative painting without distraction. And if you don't go for something super free-hand you can paint her a very simple scheme and she still works

Interesting a lot of us are getting a Dia De Los Muertos vibe with the new Mortarch. I was reminded of the newer Raging Heroes as well.

I like her, but I'm sad she doesn't get a big terror dog mount like her Mortarch buddies. Do I need to buy a fourth start collecting box now and convert a dread abyssal to hang out with her?

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Indeed. After trying (and failing) to paint various types of Tzaangor I truly appreciate a model that is beautiful in its simplicity and gives me as a painter room to breathe between details and greebles.

Well yeah, because they're the only ones actively referred to as "Mortarchs".

Krell's a Wight King with Black Axe, Vlad's a Vampire, etc.

Those aren’t the actual characters anymore though, just generic heroes. I’m sure if Krell and Vlad show up they’ll be Mortarchs still.

Honestly, I think it best that she doesn't get a mount. It starts to let us have the End Times style of "Mortarchs" back. I'm hoping for a Mortarch of Shadow(this was Vlad during End Times) and Despair(Krell during the End Times).

Krell had "Mortarch of Despair" as a special rule(Whenever an enemy unit failed a Fear, Terror, or Break test within 12" of him--he regained a single Wound lost earlier in the battle) while Vlad had "Mortarch of Shadow" that made a -1 to enemy Leadership within 12" and shooting & cc attacks targeting Vlad(or his unit--that doesn't really matter anymore) getting a -1 penalty to their To Hit rolls.

Wow. The new mortarch is gorgeous. While I may not enjoy the lore to AoS that much I think the line has produced some of Games Workshop's best miniatures.

Remember this picture of Kurdoss Valentian, the Craven King? We're getting another Nighthaunt character that is mounted, So I'm glad that Lady Olynder is not mounted on a Dread Abyssal.

The new Mortarch of Grief is absolutely beautiful, just the right amount of detail overall, I can see some great conversions coming out of her.

In fact she could make a nice C'tan for my Necrons depending on size.

Pretty disappointed with grief, would have been cooler if this was Isabella and frankly the model is very bland and tame, compared to say the Eidolon, grief is nothing. The other mortrarch sculpts are older but arguably better. Ah well.

Truly art is subjective as the comments over the Mortarch of Grief show.

I for one am really happy shes not on that weird lion death.. thing that the other ones are.

Rather disappointed with Olynder. The proportions are off and they could have done more with her face. I was hoping for a more twisted appearance overall.

It's going to make for a good conversion base though.

Wasn't that Kemmler that turned to Choas and not Krell?

I checked and Arkhan killed Kemmler when he turned to Chaos during the End Times. It was in the first book of that series. Krell stayed with Nagash until he was killed by Sigvald in the last book.

Back on topic: I really like the new model as a whole.

Good to be corrected--it's been awhile since I've just sat down and read through the story.

I was remembering the nonsense about Settra at the end of Nagash I think.

Hmm. I'm continually drawn away from her 'face' to the interesting details, like the roses (which draw attention down to the center of the model). The waist and the worked metal 'crown' vie for attention back and forth, and the spirits draw it from side to side.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I really like this new mortarch, looks very minimal and not over the top like some other AoS sculpts. Compared to nagash she looks very pleasant to work with in terms of painting and modelling. It's good they came out with at least one character that isn't a chaotic mess of gribbly bits. Even then though she's still floating on one thin piece of ghost cloth that may or may not turn out to be fragile.

That's a very bad angle to take picture of the model, it completely obscured the symbol on the staff.
