He was a pretty smart man ( build the Golden Throne after all ) and he was alive during the age of progress and the Dark age of Technology. So, if he is so smart why didn't he collect STC during all that time? In DaoT they would be like today encyclopedia right? And even after the fall of the Eldar... He was alive and in fact, help the Mankind advance now and then. HE was alive when all the progress was made and he had access to the plans and prints of all technological marvel then ( like today when you buy a book and you can see all the parts of an airplane and how to build it ). Why didn't he just make new STC and give them to AD?

Thats actually a really good question.

Maybe he just forgot? He is fallible after all, although that seems a pretty lame way to get round it.

Maybe he thought he didn't need to collect the STCs because of his plan involving the Dragon & the mechanicum?

Because of the power of grimdark. He knew that if he had given all the advanced technology away to the people he brought together in the great crusade they would not be able to put skulls all over their armour, buildings, vehicles, etc.

Perhaps because he wasn't quite the Marty Stu that some imperial players would love him to be? Perhaps because he actually suffered defeats, lost technologies, forgot things or simply never had some pieces of knowledge?
Perhaps because the general technological decline made it almost impossible to recreate the pinacles of Dark Age of Technology technologies? ( after all, even the best modern engineers wouldn't be able to recreate a nuclear power plant if they would be sent to the 15. century ).

In truth, The Emperor was wise, for why create clutter with unnumbered STC designs, when in reality, only one STC is necessary. I speak of course of the STC for the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT.

He was a luddite, or at least as much of one in the 30k as someone could be.

The Emperor was around during the Dark Age of Technology and saw first hand how much it damaged humanity. He didn't want that to happen again. He wanted humanity picking itself up by their own bootstraps and earning utopia.

I think he simply counted on them being found during his expansion or counted on not being able to find a complete one and so didn't really bother or he may have thought he could make what is needed at a later date. At any rate, he had other designs which needed his attention and he and his sons shown themselves masters of technology without the need of STCs.

Perhaps the emperor didn't create STCs because when 40K first began he wasn't the uber-techpriest that he's been retconned into I imagine he collected any he could get when crusading, represented by the oens the IOM has now.

The STC idea and the fact that a lot of them are lost to the IOM or incomplete dates from rogue trader, IIRC.

Back then the Emperor was a smart cookie warlord who subdued the other warlords and retook Earth.

Impressive, i'll grant you, but tech was crude as hell. Mk 1 and Mk 2 power armour prove this

If he was such a tech-panda that had been around during the Golden Age of Humanity his followers tech ought to have been a bit spiffier from the start, as he would have known how to make it (being the engineer he supposedly is in later fluff) and imperial tech should be at GAOH levels, not the degenerate and limited form the IOM uses, reliant on Mars to maintain it. Tech hasn't degraded since the Great Crusade. It's advanced. The reverse ought to be true if he was such a whiz.

The idea that he built the golden throne personally as a webway gate is from BL around late 3rd or 4th edition, along with a lot of the rest of the emperor iz bestest crap.

The 3rd edition rulebook and earlier fluff has the Golden Throne being built around him after his death, (with it being hinted as Rogal Dorn in one story from prehistoric 40K that designed it) as a life support system. No more no less.

An awful lot of the later fluff (especially from BL) doesn't sit well with the earlier stuff. It has a bad habit of glorifying the marines, and rewriting fluff history to make them look better/smarter/more shiny.

Which is one piece of technology. Intel can build very nice cpus, but i doubt that they have the know-how to build an atomic warhead.
Perhaps the same can be said for the emprah? Lots of knowledge in one sector, much less in others. It might even be able that he, much like the techpriests of mars,
understood how to use some pieces of technology, or perhaps even how they worked, but didn't manage to reproduce them because there were no longer the required
production capabilities around and the technologies to build such facilites was lost a long time ago. After all, no matter how much some people seem to love him,
the emprah is just a man, a fantasticaly gifted one, but a man nonetheles.

Before the Horus Heresy, there was no need, because AdMech had extensive libraries on Mars listing all technological knowledge. These were destroyed during the HH (see novel Mechanicum). And during the HH the Emperor was busy otherwise so couldn't retrieve the information.

Rogue Trader was the first publication of the 40k universe. So you're saying it dates from the beginning.

His specific guys were way ahead of everyone else at the time, and still are. For example, the Custodian Guard had jetbikes, personal force fields, and laser spears (which, unlike today's depiction of storm bolters on a spear, were more like a more powerful lascannon on a spear and still not a heavy weapon).

The Emperor didn't pass out his tech knowledge to everyone. He was still monomaniacal tyrant after all.

Yes. The STC have always been in 40k, with them being databases from an earlier human empire (the Golden Age of Technology, before the Dark Age and the rise of the Emperor. The current imperial tech is based almost entirely on these databases, which explains the sameness of a lot of imperial tech (all IOM tanks are based on about 4 chassis designs) and the lack of innovation since. The Adeptus Mechanicus has a largeish but very incomplete collection.

It's not in any of the fluff i grew up with, which had the tech much much cruder that the current stuff. Mk 1 power armour was what the Emperor's personal guard were wearing during the conquest of earth. MK1 is crude and fugly. I still have pics from the WD that did the evolution of power armour somewhere.

Another question. With all this fancy dan tech why is the Emperor using a mundane powerfist as an offhand weapon?

It is rumoured that the Fabricator-General of Mars has a database of all STCs...

You know, the Mechanicus is helpful as hell to the IOM, but I really think they are causing so much technology to be lost. Seeing that they are absolutely insane over finding the STC's, and that they keep it ALL to themselves, the Imperium pretty much gets the crappy stuff that the Mechanicus SAYS is good. I mean, if the IOM had it their way, they could probably strip a Baneblade, re-create the parts, and then mass produce the bloody thing, (just an example.) But no, the Mechanicus gets all offended, and I've even read books where Tech-Priests have killed guardsmen or even Marines to save their precious technology... sheesh

Unless of course it's a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT! (God, I gotta get me one of those)

The Emperor has better stuff to do than try to remember STC designs from hsi time at Community College. He has people to do that for him.
