Subject: Forgeworld to Use a New Resin (NOT Finecast)?

Folks,
At my FLGS I was speaking to one of the employees who paid a visit to Forgeworld HQ, and was told about the fact they are to be using a new resin which has been in R&D for some time. Aparrently this isn't Citadel Finecast, which is believeable since Finecast was developed to meet the current GW moulding techniques, which is different to FW. The main thing being told to me was that like Finecast, this resin will do away with the health issues associated with their current resin.
I appreciate this is 2nd/3rd hand information; before I get excited, has anyone else heard anything about this?

My "made in China" Elysians had a different quality to them, but that could just be them using good resin for a change and not the crap FW uses.
My healthy be damned, give us resin that makes for better models already!

I'm guessing that FW alongside the export of their products also exported some of their QC division there.

It depends on the age of the model. As far as I know, older kits are shipped to China for the most part while FW handles the new kits and certain others. Automatically Appended Next Post: H.B.M.C. wrote:P-p-p-p-p-p-price increase!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered a Mega Dread recently and it was missing a whole sprue. I noticed the bag said made in China so when I phoned for a replacement I asked if I had to wait for it to arrive from China ? The guy on the phone said all casting was now done back in Nottingham and they had outsourced at one time to China but had now cancelled that.
I still had to wait three weeks for my missing bits and they arrived miscast !

I had to wait half a year for two drop crate inserts. They did send it to me via UPS Express to make up for lost time.

There are often empty barrels of Smooth-On resin (easily identifiable as it comes in pairs of barrels, one yellow, one blue) outside Forgeworld's offices in Nottingham, so I'm guessing the current stuff they use (at least for in-house casting) is off-the-shelf stuff ( 300 series at a guess, with some sort of filler that makes it grey: http://www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Plastic-a/c5_1120_1209/index.html)
If they're coming up with something new, it wouldn't surprise me if it's in collaboration with Smooth-On themselves. Forgeworld is presumably a fairly large customer.

That's interesting news. Would they be trying it out currently? I just placed an order for a few repressors, and new resin might be kind of cool. Or even more of a QC nightmare.

Huh Smooth On huh? They make good stuff it seems; I use 300 series myself. They are actually just down the road about a half hour from my place. Good on them if they can help FW sort themselves out. Big if though!

IS HBMC ever happy with any GW related news?
|
The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

He must love GW on some level, since he buys truckloads of their models each month. Plus what's a price increase to someone who's probably spent 100k in models anyway? I'll bet he's a billionaire.

Meh. Even if this new resin is more reliable than the current FW resin, the prices will still be obscene, perhaps more so. Forge World stuff is very cool looking, but costs too much.

I read somewhere that FW uses a lot of aluminium in their resin mix to bulk it out (somehow... don't ask me). As it's cheaper.
Could be they're moving to a pure resin.

That sounds like complete nonsense. the resin they use is a 2-part mix, the finecast stuff is similar but with a different makeup. adding aluminium would be both ridiculously expensive and totally counter-productive.
The new resin is the hollow stuff they are using to make the scenery boards.
