Okay so Sunday is family day...normally. So I get the wife and daughter in the car and we drive 3 hours to her small bi-monthly family outing. Now she is pregnant so all the girls want to go baby shopping and she is worried that since this is the first time I am meeting some of the family I will be excluded and fairly bored not knowing anyone. She tells me her cousin is going to a gaming store...and since I always have my army in the car...I can go and play a game. I meet her cousin and he is well...into Magic...so I figure he can go off with his friends and I will find a game in the store myself. So I am surprise to find a lot of Ard Boyz practicing going on so I see a guy at a table and ask him if he wants to play. He starts asking if I mind Forgeworld rules and some other IG type rules and I inform him that I really just looking for regular rule game play. He is a little disappointed, but he says he will go to the car and get his stuff. To my surprise he comes back in with what appears to be about 10k+ suitcases full of nicely painted IG. Thinking this is going to be a great game we agree on Pitched Battle KP to just keep it simple. He starts unpacking, telling me all about the books he has read and IG fluff stuff...I listen, just calmly waiting for him...not knowing that he probably has read every book on IG...except the rulebook and the codex.

So to the list...

My List

HQ
Vect

Elites
3x 4 Trueborn w/ blasters and haywire + Venom w/ dual cannons

Troops
6x Wyches w/ Hydra, Heka + Agonizer, Haywire + Venom w/ dual Cannons

Fast Attack
3x Scourges w/ 2 Haywire Blasters

Heavy
Ravagers w/ Dark Lances, FF

His List

HQ
CCS w/ OoF, Hvy Bolter Team +Chimera w/ Hull Flamer and Hvy Stubber

Elite
2 5 man Storm Trooper Squad

Troops
6x Vet Squad w/ Hvy Bolter Team +Chimera w/ Hvy Stubber and Hull Flamer

Fast Attack
2x Vendettas
1x Hellhound

Heavy Support
2x 3 LRBT Squad
Manticore

Now when I started pulling out my stuff and waiting he was really going over my list while making his...I think he tweeked it against DE.

So we roll off and I win...I deploy first and go first. I have really no terrain on my side...I pointed this out, but I told him I could deal with it...he had 2 large ruins and a hill in his deployment zone. I had 2 flat top small hills that he claimed didn't give cover saves. So basically I'm out in the open...was going to reserve fully but decided to go for it. So I deployed along the 12 inch line spacing out decently and using Scourges to give cover to Ravagers if he was to steal init. He deploy 1 Vet Chimera and Manticore in a corner...the rest of his army is just about castle in the other, keeping the storm troopers in the Vendettas outflanking.

Now here is where it gets interesting. I ask if he is going to try to steal init and he says that he will just go first. I explain the rule about who goes first...we read the rulebook and still thinks we should roll off to see who goes first. Being in a strange place, I say fine. He wins the roll, smiling he goes to move his models and I tell him that I would like to try to steal init. He cannot argue it, so I roll a five and smile. He goes to move his guys again, I have to explain that Vect allows me to steal init on a 4+. Frustrated and drawing a crowd with so much armor on the table, he agrees and I start the game. I roll 3d6 run for combat drugs...this helps a ton.

DE Turn 1
I noticed that his main castle is the 2 Leman Squads 12" from board edge with the Hellhound 12" in, between the 2 squads. I move my 3 Venoms closest up 12" and deploy the wyches. I move the Ravager over to get all 3 on the main castle. I flat out move 1 Trueborn Squad and 2 Wyches towards the the single chimera and manticore hiding behind cover. The Scourges I move up 2 flanking his main castle to the right and one up my left flank in case he moves his chimeras thru 2 perfectly place pieces of terrain that allow a chimera to get in between. My last wych squad I flat out move to the middle of the board as a target and hopefully one to take some of those pie plates away from my scourges.

Shooting goes well. I cannot see 4 of his chimeras behind the LRBT Squads, but I stunned the rear one that would allow them to come out to the left. The hellhound lost both weapons and is now just a hull. The 2 Trueborns and Scourges take off 3 cannons of the 6 LRBTs, and my 3 wych squad roll 5s and 6s on run moves.

Assaults sees me wreck 4 out the 6 LRBT, and stun the other 2. His hellhound is now immoblized as well...this causes a BIG fuss from my opponent about haywire grenades. He starts walking around asking others about my moves..he checks my codex..he whines, moans and really shows himself off so much the store owner comes over and offers to stand and watch making rulings, which he agrees to. I inform the store owner of my list, he checks all the measurements...everything is fine, so I go to end my turn and notice he has removed the Russes and the hellhound from the table. I inform him that they are suppose to stay on as wrecks, and he pulls out some exploded templates, to which I inform the "judge" that all the wrecks were wrecks not explosions since a glancing hit cannot explode a tank. The judge agrees and he places the tanks back on the table.

IG Turn 1
He rolls for reserves...I facepalm myself. I inform him he has to wait until the second turn to roll for reserves..the judge nods. So he then moves his chimeras to get 1 thru the space between the 2 pieces of terrain. His other chimera near the manticore moves 12 inches out to get shots next round. He pops smoke on everything.

Shooting was frustrating as he tries to place the template to get my assaulting wyches but judge informs him that he is touching his remaining tanks with the template and cannot do that. So he retargets my Ravager. He rolls 3 missiles and scatter with the first shot a little, but the other scatter allow him to hit my ravanger twice at half str, and 2 of my scouges. Both scourges die, but the FF saved the one pen on the ravager.

At this point he declares he ends his turn, but I inform him that my wyches are still in B2B contact with his Russes and get to attack again. He argues and loses to judge ruling. I knock the remaining weapons off one and stun the other, Hellhound is wrecked.

DE Turn 2

Now the crowd in the store has stopped playing, both card gamers and Warhammer players and a lot of people are just watching and making comments on what my next action is going to be. I have 5 Chimeras behind the wrecks and a manticore and chimera on the other corner I need to deal with before those vendettas get on.

I move my Venom near the manticore into position between the Chimera and Manticore, deploying the wyches towards the manticore, leaving the Chimeras rear blocked by the venom. I then move the other 2 venoms up in front of the chimera and deploy the wyches and trueborn. The other side of the board I continue my Scourges flanking on both sides. The disembarked wyches split up with 2 going to the interesing tunnel for chimeras, and the other going around the other side of the castle to the stunned chimera. My Ravagers move to pop the CCS Chimera that is in the middle of the terrain tunnel.

Shooting sees the CCS Chimera wrecked. He emergency disembarks them to the front of the tank due to the rear and sides being blocked. I fail to reach assault range on the manticore rolling 1,2,2 for run moves on the wyches, but the trueborn and other wyches have exploded the veteran chimera and wyches made a 6 run roll to get within 2" of the remaining troops. Special note here, when exploded he tried to claim cover save against the explosion, saying that the troops are in terrain since now the chimera is a crater....judge facepalms, and rules against it.

Assault sees me reach the veteran squad near manticore, killing the remaining men. I assault the CCS and cause 3 wounds. He goes to allocate them, and I try to help by telling him to allocate one of the power weapon wounds to the hwt but he says no, that he doesn't like wound shenagians and would rather lose the OoF and 2 guardsmen to allow himself to get out of assault. I ask what he means and he removes the 3 models my 5 man squad is in base contact with and claims that now he isn't in assault and can shoot me next round....the entire store facepalms.....judge tosses up his hands and says we need to end the game because my opponent doesn't have a clue about the game.

So my opponent agrees and starts packing up his stuff..I ask if he wants some help in rules and we proceed to have about another hour of Q & A on 40k, with a lot of other players joining in asking questions since a lot of them are just picking up the game.

My cousin-in-law?? even joins in and gets really interested in the game. I give him 2 tactical squads and a dreadnaught from my AoBR leftovers and he starts playing on another table with a friend. I finish up, had a few laughs. I ended up telling cousin to keep the models as a gift, and we return back to get ready for dinner with rest of family.

Cousin has told everyone how cool I am, and that I this awesome god of military tactics, which made for the new family members interested in talking about the game with me. All in All, great day.

I agree, a lot of people would have turned into complete douches against someone like this, but you sir managed to spin it into a positive.

That line pretty much sums up the whole report Sounds like a great day, as long as your opponent learnt something then I guess the game wasn't a complete waste of time!
