Not my fist attempt at OSL but probably my best effort so far. I've been looking at how light reflects off of real surfaces and tried to use that to improve my technique. (like the bright line of OSL along a facing edge)

It's a self-portrait you know... so of course the light is on all the time!

Back to the magnet question now that I'm not typing on my phone.

The two magnets on the outside of the hollow are low-profile 1/4" diameter RE magnets. all that surface area means they've got a lot of holding power but don't take up much of the cavity. I was originally going to go with matching magnets on the ends of the barrel tongue (or whatever you call it) but that little tube is short enough already, making it short enough for even the low-profile magnets might compromise the integrity of the thing, plus I bet the magnets would have a tendency to break their glue bonds with the gun. So I went with 1/8" RE magnets embedded in green stuff.

The trick when adding the extra rockets to the gun is not to add too much weight or I will have rotational issues. I have 3 possibilities; brass rod (too heavy I think), styrene tube with a GS cone & styrene rod. Going to try the styrene rod first & see if i can use an old jeweler's trick to shape the cone properly as it'll be the lightest.

@Heff: good suggestion... I'll think on it.

Gitz, you list the diameter of magnets, but what is the thickness? 1/32", 1/16", 1/8", or 3/16"?

Do you mean droopage? or Horizontal issues?

I think the standard magnets are 1/16" thick. The low profile 1/4" magnets are half that.

Well, the only way they can rotate is up and down once they're in place (just like the main guns on any turret)... and it's the rotational "bond" that's the weakest. Nearly impossible to pull these magnets straight off each other, but sliding them or rotating them is much easier.

Here's a couple of pics for you nay-sayers who thought my little rockets were "weedy"...

I didn't actually get to the store to get supplies so I had to work with what I had on hand. Plastic tube, GS and toothpicks. The magnet connection is very strong and these will stay exactly where I put them. I can even hold one and shake my hand up and down pretty vigorously and they won't budge. If I tap the turret on the table, they'll move, but I can't see any way these will move from whatever pose I put them in, in the course of normal gaming.

Well, perhaps after it's painted.

Someone asked earlier if I'd gotten the grot mega-tank... no, not yet. I only buy things that I think I can proxy or modify to field legally in a 40k army & the IA's aren't accepted around here as valid rules sets for tournaments and such as they are viewed as unbalancing.

Hope to have those comparison shots in a bit. Have a bit of painting I want to do first.

OK, here are a couple of size comparison shots. Disregard the painting... this is just the first step. These will get two washes before I consider the "base" done, then I'll come in and start adding detail. I'm going to handle the tanks in the same way that I do my kans... that being each painted individually and with no real regard to the others. I see these as coming from the same mentality as the kans, so each bitsie grot mek puts his own personality into construction and painting. I'm particularly happy that the gun easily depresses it's S8, AP 3, re-rollable armament at the marine threatening it. Beakie git!

I see these as perfect proxies for warbuggies with extra armor and a grot rigger. Note that this is the largest of the tanks by far. The rest are shorter and much less bulky.

Looking great! Cutte little tanks on speed

You do realize, from a gaming point of view, that grot riggers and extra armour don't mix with the squadron rules?

Yes, unforunately... been through this with my kans. Riggers fix immobilized which doesn't work due to instant kill of squadron'd vehicles. I still don't understand the logic of why armor plates don't work though as there's no "instant kill" thing associated there. But, I know they don't work.

Stupid GW.

So my "explanation" for the tanks is that they're buggies with extra armor and grot riggers, but I obviously won't pay of upgrades that won't do me any good... I'm just hoping that 6th Edition is a bit less brain dead when it comes to the squadron rules.

Ok, it's all good then - look at it the bright way: it frees up almost enough points for an additional buggy squadron

This morning's progress. Base coats are down on both now. Last tank will get a metallic coat but much lighter and browner than the tank on the left. You'll note the extra rocket launcher in the command tank on the right. That's the one that came with the set. It's now magnetized to fit into the second gun mount but doesn't rotate (there's just a magnet in the back and one in the gun. Funny thing is I put the magnets in wrong first, so I had to cut the gun off of it's original resin mounting and build a new one out of styrene tubing. Whoops!

I'm all out of rocket launchers so I'll have to wait on that conversion on the third tank until I get more (arranged to buy some from someone at my FLGS, but getting there might take a few days). However, I can still work on the third tank body and there's a ton of detailing to do on these guys.

Should be fun!

A good way to look at these is an an equivalent to the killa kans. They're actually near the same size (slightly shorter on average but more massive). In that context... the size is right, it's just as an ork proxy they're small.

Just had a GREAT idea for the paint job on the third tank... which I will do tomorrow.

WIP 5 and pretty much done for tonight... I don't like it when scrap vehicles become too "scrappy" as you tend to completely lose the shape and continuity of the figure in a bunch of randomly panted bits. So I've laid out some ground rules and will be sticking to them. The only odd colored panels will be corrugated metal and diamond plate which will be depicted in their natural colors.

Now see.... pay attention folks.

THIS (pointing to the above post) is EXACTLY why you have a P&M blog. Because sometimes someone looks at your work with fresh eyes and has a brilliant idea that youd've never thought of yourself.

Consider it done marmaduke... and thank you!

@CK: Thanks... I do plan on adding some color to the plates, but I also plan on keeping the same feel (i.e. the existing color) throughout... ah heck, too hard to explain. You'll see.

-----------------------------------------------------

Today's work... If the paint looks sloppy on the front and bones of the gun, that's because I want it to look like an A.D.D grot slapped paint with a brush on the metal without much concern for coverage. Finished the grot and the exhaust too. Going to do a bit of building for my marines tonight, but I might dabble a bit more with this tank. Have to make a big decision in a bit here so I'm stalling some while I think it over.

Looking great, and I get your drift with the colour thingy, no worries! I'd consider adding a tad more colour to the rokkits to make them more prominent on the model - and maybe some eyes above the front teef? I'm always a fan of an atavistic look with the greenskins

I really like the way you've done the front panel, the whole model is coming on nicely. I've got an itch now about doing all things grot!!

That's still WIP remember, no where near done. The rockets still need to be painted, as well as that little antenna thingie on top with it's accompanying OSL.

As this is part of my Bad Moon army, I want to get some yellow on the big side panels... probably similar in effect to the green, but I'm not sure about that as I really like the look of the metal. I'll paint the rest of the tank first and save that decision for last.

Looking at the design of the front, I think the view port is supposed to represent the eyes, but I decided that I preferred it more abstract portrayal rather than specifically coloring in the whole head or doing something like eyes. It looks like their used to be more to the colored plate and it was blown / torn off at some point in the past... I like it that way.
