I am going to be playing 40k with new people soon i have played before with close friends and there hasn't been a problem, but i am terrified of playing a game with a total stranger and then making an ass of myself.

How can i avoid this? would it just be proper good sportsmanship? or something I am missing completely?

Any and all help would be helpful

If you're losing and/or lost a match, it is proper etiquette to flip over the table then storm out.

Remember that people do this hobby for fun, so if you notice that anything you are doing could hamper the fun of another person(beyond beating them viciously in the game) make sure that you need to do that. If people are doing things to ruin your fun, let them know.

I'll agree with this, and not touching other peoples models. Just be a nice person, and if you have a rules dispute, Just ask kindly for them to show you the rule/you show them the rule. I'd say go look at the "Worst wargaming moments" thread, and don't do anything listed in their either.

Honestly there isn't a huge secret list of "gaming etiquettes." Just normal common sense, socially acceptable behavior will do you fine.

Don't act like a jerk and play nice, like your mother taught you. Win or lose graciously. If you win, don't dance around the table; if you lose, don't pout or make a deprecating comment like "my dice were against me."

In other words, act like a polite human being...

Even if you get your ass handed to you, or you utterly destroy them, always end with a handshake and a "good game".

Just be poilte and friendly and you wont go far wrong.

One rule to rule them all:

When in doubt, whip it out.

Don't argue obscure rules interps, offer to settle with a die roll to keep things going.

Play by the rules, and have all info for your army available, for refrence.

Don't make the "face" when things don't go your way, by the "face" I mean the frown and sighing that marks a sore loser. Try to keep it fun and light, badluck happens to everyone, dont get a "the game/world hates me " attitude.

Er on the side of caution when implementing a rule that either player is not 100% certain of, if possible see first suggestion.

Never touch another players dice....never

Personal Hygiene, your own odor is not a valid weapon in a 40k game, do not offend. (Only mentioned this as its a common problem at tournaments and some game stores.)

Other than that always keep in mind this is for fun, its just a game, and in the final evaluation its a excuse for grown adults ( in most cases hopefully adult acting ) to push little plastic guys around a table and play make believe.

Keep it fun!
