Not impressed. Mandrakes are made of pure suck.

Game terms yeah, but in the fluff? They are perfect hunters, creatures of unparalleled stealth, etc. Mkoll out-hunted and out-stealthed one. It's impressive.

Clearly I misunderstood this thread. I thought it was about how tough they are in the background fluff, not who has the best looking models or best rules in the game.

In the fluff it is not a debate. It is the Catachans. Catachan is a far more dangerous place to grow up than most deathworlds like Fenris and your average citizen is more dangerous and tough than a regular Imperial Guardsmen.

However it is worth remembering that different regiments excel in different battlezones. Jungle - Catachans, trenches - Krieg, hunting orks - Hybrean Hunters (in the Bloodquest comic they are acknowledged as the best ork fighters by the Blood Angels) etc

Based on models I have to say I like the WWI Germans - Go Krieg!

Imperial Fists - 10,000pts Daemons - 8000pts Hive Fleet Moloch - 10,000pts
Black Templars - 4000pts Goff Orks - 8000pts Death Guard - 3500pts
Dark Angels - 4000pts World Eaters - 3000pts Alaitoc Craftworld - 8000pts
Space Wolves - 4000pts Black Legion - 9000pts Heretics & mutants - 2000pts
Grey Knights - 4000pts Dark Eldar - 5000pts Cadian Imperial Guard - 5000pts
Tau - 4000pts Catachan Imperial Guard - 1000pts Necrons - 7000pts
Blood Angels - 4000pts Biel-tan Craftworld - 2000pts Eldar Corsairs - 1000pts
Agents of the Imperium - 1500pts
Imperial Knights - 2000pts Death Watch - 1500pts
Adeptus Mechanicus - 3000pts Harlequins - 1000pts Genestealer Cult - 2000pts
Blood Ravens - 1000pts Thousand Sons - 2500pts

I'm kind of sad that Steel Legion isn't doing as well as its used to...

I'm still kind of confused who steel legion is supposed to mimic. They remind me of Krieg but not really up to modern Germans nor WW2 gears since gas masks don't really match that well.

As far as I'm aware the Steel Legion is based upon the Fallschrimjäger for uniform (helmet & smock) mixed with the tactics of the Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers (mechanised essentially). Gasmasks just help to add to the 'grim' feel.

I'm afraid I'm another Krieg vote. It's their attitude that makes them so 'badass'. They are the subject of a controversial birthing technique known as the vitae-womb, born on a planet that is considerably deadlier than even Catachan due to the lethal isotopes that it is saturated in (show the slightest bit of flesh on the surface & you're dead) - like living on a planet coated in Sarin. The Krieg regiments then go to war eager to die for their Emperor to repay a percieved debt for the planets treachery during M40, a debt which they believe is only repaid by sacrificing themselves on the battlefield for the Emperor. They're also the only regiments I've heard of that Commissars are attached to curb their zeal.

Staying on target.....

DKoK, there's some fluff in the rule book about a city surrendering and then they hammer the city with artillery anyway till they all died, hard ass I'd say.

Other than that I think the mordians are 2nd, they don't retreat and they have control of themselves down to the tea. Badass doesn't have to be grim, it can be clean, shiny and firm

woo very nice info, I didn't know anything about the Gepanzerte Panzergrenadiers till now. Thanks for the tip =)
Frankly I'm a big fan of Krieg as well but it's so expensive to build an army with forge world models >.< I can field a steel legion only army at 1500 now but I lack melta gun figures so bad I'm subbing in old school storm trooper models. Plenty of plasma though.

I'd buy the krieg forge world one but I don't need a heavy stubber for anything. My CCS is Kreig at least

I'd imagine them telling their fellow gas mask great coat wearing fellows to their deaths quite often kekeke,

I currently use the Wargames Factory Greatcoat troopers for my guard army, and plan on getting the Krieg command squads, since I wanted the trenchie/gaskmask thing, but not the price of FW either. Realistically, the WGF models arent as detailed as GW/FW, but for me they definitely get the job done.

do you know Imperial Guardsmen should come in varying stats depending on their regiments

Well if you use the 5th Ed. FW DKoK army list, all of the Korpsmen come with WS4 and those lovely 'Die Hard' and 'Iron Discipline' rules from the previous Guard Codex.

Well votes continue to trickle in but the actual rankings themselves have pretty much solidified. Final (sortof) measure of Badassery:

1) Death Korps of Krieg
No Guardsmen epitmoizes the grim darkness of the 41st millennium more than the Death Korps. Mass produced, faceless soldiers sent forward to clog the enemies’ guns with their dead. They live and die by the belief that war is not won by tactics and strategy but by faith and faith alone. They first by a mile and they deserve it.

2) Catachan Jungle Fighters
Probably the actual most “badass” army. Every single trooper is Rambo. Just living to adolescence on their howeworld is a monumental feat that makes life in the guard seem like a cakewalk.

3) Tanith First & Only
The perpetual underdog. The Tanith are the everyman army that people can relate to and cheer for. Sure the have stealth and scouting superpowers but somehow that just feeds into their regular-guys-doing-their-best flavour. Tanks, Artillery and Air Cover are for pussies Tanith will make do with their bayonets. Straight Silver!

4) Cadian Shock Troops
The Ultramarines of the Imperial Guard: for all the love and nerd hate that entails. Is their any world in the Emperor’s realm that gives as much as Cadia? It seems like they’ve fought and bled and every one his worlds. Their home soil doesn’t even have enough room for all the tombstones of heroes

5) Elysian Drop Troops
Fifth? Really? Modern strategy and tactics don’t work guys. See #1. Despite that, their coolness is undeniable.

6) Steel Legion
Like Death Korps…but not as cool. Still pretty cool, just not Death Korps cool. That’s not really fair, there’s more to them like being completely mechanized. That’s something current players of the IG can appreciate. Also, there’s something to be said for coming from Armageddon, a planet that shall surely never again see the end of war.

7) Vostroyan Firstborn
Having recently painted up a batch of these guys they have become one of my favorites. They have such a unique look and a unique background to go with it.

8) Praetorian Guard
We don’t know much about these guys but I’m attributing their popularity to the fact their fans picture them as the guys from the Monty Python Zulu Sketch, but fighting orks, like I do.

9) Valhallan Ice Warriors
40K owes a lot of its thematic feel to the 1940s Soviet Union and Red Army so it’s a shame to not see these guys get more credit but it would appear that they too have had their thunder stolen by the Death Korps. Massed infantry attacks, massive artillery bombardments and intractable defence are their hallmarks too but they don’t wear cool rebreathers while they do it. Even Valhalla, which is a complete hellhole, is not as much of a hellhole as Krieg.

10) Mordian Iron Guard
In the Imperial Guard iron discipline is often the only difference between victory and defeat and the Mordians pride themselves on being the most disciplined troopers in the galaxy. However, like most people, it appears their uniforms just aren’t as spiffy as the Praetorians.

11) Savlar Chem-Dogs
Not sure how these guys snuck in here as I think my original criteria is that you had to have models. That being said they, in a way, represent all penal legion troopers. An entire regiment of drug addicts and reprobates their commissars must be some of the toughest mother-fethers in the Guard.

12) Tallarn Desert Raiders
Well somebody’s got to be last and for whatever reason it’s the Tallarn. It’s too bad because they got fleshed out somewhat in the Taros Campaign. These guys have basically a superhuman ability to do weeks of hard soldiering and fighting with no water whatsoever. Don’t worry guys you’re still total badasses in my book.

Steel Legion- Close quarters menaces that cruise around in chimeras killing loads of Orkz with the help of hive psychos welded into cranes. The problem with Death Korps is that they aren't really that badass, they're just suicidal. To be the most badass, you kind of have to perform your badassery with the intention of staying alive,

Krieg! What a hole...

Death Korp of Krieg and their 19 years old Grenadier.

I personally view them as not fearing death and putting theit duty above all rather than suicidal.

Krieg! What a hole...

They do put duty above all but they won't die to a man to a useless fight

Spoiler from Dead Men Walking
Spoiler:
When the last assault against the Necron pyramid fails, the remaining Korpsmen evacuate the planet rather than die ''just because''

It's not that they know they're going to die, more that they -want- to die for their God-Emperor. Those from Krieg believe that by dying for their God-Emperor whilst fighting his enemies they're helping to pay their percieved blood-debt to the Imperium for Kriegs transgressions in M40. This is why they have Commissars - not for infractions but to prevent the Krieg officers & men from throwing themselves at the enemy and dying pointlessly when their deaths could better serve the Imperium another time.

No, the First Pyritean Dragoons are my custom regiment, not based off of the Vitrians, more like a combo of Tanith, Catachan, and Cadia. Stealthy, hard-hitting, matured on the cold hard streets of Pyrites.

I gotta give props to the Steel Legion. The mechanised thing is a major win (nothign says badass like a wall of tanks/APCs rolling down on you), coming from Armageddon is a bonus (never ending WAAAAAAAR ), and they're stylish to boot. Plus, Andrej is amazing during all of ADB's Helsreach - he's both hysterically funny and a hardcore double-hard bastard at the same time.

Andrej is a strom trooper though. He's likely not even from Armegeddon nor is he a steel legion trooper. But I do agree, I loved his lines
