Subject: Female Commisar - New Projects start on Page 14!
I think the hips look really narrow in comparison to the shoulders on both of the new commissar models. The legs are looking pretty good though, especially on #1. #1's butt, especially in that second pic, just seems a bit extreme. I think shaving it down would do it some good.
The guardswoman progress is looking good too, but I think the proportions of the armature are pointing to that mini having the same super-narrow hips as the commissars. Women generally have hips wider than their shoulders. Should be an easy fix in all cases.
There is no such thing as a butt that is too extreme.

You guys are right, the butt is a bit big, I'll look into shaving that off a bit, or just re-doing it all together. I balked at such a concept on my first sculpt, but this is actually this model's second butt, her first one was half-way up her back! (anyway, if I make a mini that needs a bigger butt after I have copies made, I can just add a bigger butt then.)
And HIPS! How did I forget hips on this one?!?! I will add hips.
As for Femmissar #2, She is still in the early stages, and I haven't even payed much attention to her torso at all yet.
For the soldier, I'll make sure her hips are wide enough also, don't think of the armature as bones, just a general shape to hold the GS.
Well, no hips yet, but I did start to sand down #1's legs and torso to smooth her out a bit. I tried to just sand down her posterior, but it didn't look right, so I'll just re-do her trunk, and see if I can leave some of the junk out of it.
I'll be sending her to the "shop" to get casts done pretty soon. Not sure how long she'll be there, but I'll be progressing on #2 and the soldier while she is out. I'm not making a "blank" copy of #2 as she is in a pretty unique pose, but #1 is in a classic or at least often used pose, and I can forsee needing that pose alot for Officers, Tech Priets, Navigators...pretty much anything to be honest.
I will be making copies of course of the soldier once she is done. I plan on at least a couple of different torsos, at least one with a tank top for jungle operations. A few different leg and arm poses.
Which brings me to a question to pose to you Dakkites:
The female heads from HassleFree Minis say they can be used commercially. I have sent 2 different emails to HassleFree to get more information on this statement, but I have received no response.
My question is: "what does this mean?"
I know I can't just take thier sprues and make molds of them and sell the copies, that's a no-brainer.
But, if I add hair and/or helmets to them, can I make copies of those and sell them?
Or does it mean I can make a model using a head and sell it, but not make copies of the model that include the head?
I really need to find out the answer, as it will make a HUGE difference in how I procede from here.
This is by no means conclusive or legal advice, but I'm pretty sure it means you can add detail, make casts, and sell the copies. I'm pretty sure a number of the Chapterhouse heads were made with the Hasslefree heads as a base, but I could be blatantly wrong there. Hopefully they'll get back to you soon anyway.
In cases such as that (and I'm no exper either) I believe SOP is to use them first (that is, add the detail, cast 'em up and sell them) and then if Hasslefree objects, you can work out the details. But in this case, I'd say that as long as you're not passing the base heads off as your own sculpts, you'll be fine.

They both look like they have a lot of potential. Initially I thought #1 was a bit too short and stubby in the legs, but it seems like you're addressing that. Following this thread now.

*L* Glad you posted that. Saved me the time of typing out the lyrics from memory.
Definitely liking the new look, though it does occur to me you might not know that many companies sell sculpting dollies, like Reaper. Didn't really occur to me before, but I should toss that out there.
One comment about the sculpt, you might not want the legs to be perfectly straight. Military folks usually learn very quickly to stand at attention with knees slightly bent, as perfectly straight constricts blood flow. No big deal for 5 minutes, but you sometimes see new recruits black out after 30 minutes at attention due to standing with locked knees.
Now, of course with pants it is nearly impossible to tell, but if you want to use her with boots or party socks, you might want to bend the knees just a bit.

You dare contradict my superior intellect?! Those two ork boyz happen to have picked their weapons up the wrong way round, the guys who always miss in the shooting phase, yeah, now you know who to blame...!
As for the name, I just made it up, perhaps I saw it when reading a blog and forgot where it came from!
@ishkatar - Thanks, I had forgotten some of the words!
@Wehrkind - Yes, I have some of the Reaper dollies. But they don't bend well. They are pretty much in the spread eagle pose, and not going to move much, unless you chop them up. But I am using them for proportions. And for that they are invaluable.
Besides, if I used someone else's blank figures, they wouldn't be mine! And it would be expensive!
As for the legs, these aren't meant to be "at attention" poses, just a moment in time where the figure is doing something inspiring or imposing or just posing. Like if someone yells "smile!" at you, you usually pose some way that you think is cool, but if you held that pose for long, it would be uncomfortable. Anyway, once I get the resin casts back, I will most likely cut a few up and put them in different posses anyway. Like at least one hunched over holding onto a staff, like a tech priestess, or a navigator, or some such.
Ahh good call. I have some of the Reaper ones, and still haven't used them for largely the same reason. Their advanced dollies which are basically the regulars minus real joints are ok, but kind of awkward in that they are sort of just balls of lead with threads between them.
Bronze Age Miniatures also makes dollies, though they are very specific poses.
Look forward to seeing your stuff! Resin dollies will definitely be a LOT easier to work with!
