I guess I don't get what GW is trying to do here.

I can't imagine anyone switching from Vallejo or Reaper to GW simply because of a name change. In fact, the name change would make it more difficult to switch.

I also can't imagine that this would lead to more (or even the same number) of sales from casual fans of GW's products. If you run out of Ultramarine Blue, are you going to pick up Vallejo's "Ultramarine Blue" (or whatever), or "Macragge Blue" and hope it's the same product.

Hardcore GW fans will likely continue to buy GW paints for a variety of reasons, but this seems like an unnecessary expense (can you imagine all of the time that went into picking the names alone?) for a small, if any, increase in product awareness.

Personally, I'll stick with Vallejo. They're a lot closer to all of the old GW painting articles I have.

Yeah, just like 'XV-88' screams...uh...some color.

And you can now paint your ultramarines with a base of Macragge Blue, glaze it with Guilliman blue and then layer it with Calgar and Thunderhawk blue (Thunderhawks are blue?).

Since when are Elysians green?

It really does seem like they put up a big poster with all their trademarked names on it, set out each new paint color and threw a dart at the poster to pick the name for it.

But whatever. I like their paints, so as long as they are at least as good, I'll be fine.

Same here!

I think GW could have increased sales by keeping the same names on existing colors and increasing the range of paints with... new paints!

As it is, they seem to be creating a large amount of confusion for little to no discernible gain.

I'll muddle through t to find the few things I like (washes and some foundations) and if something awesome is introduced (or reintroduced in terms of discontinued colors making a comeback) - great!

1.) I guess this is a consequence of stopping paint production in China. They had to find an alternative and used the opportunity for a big change. Manufacturer change couldn't guarantee exact identical colours, so all were renamed, even safe ones like Knarloc green.
2.) Paint range will about double. New lines like structural paints are introduced. Gives a boost to painting in general and paint sales in specific.

Some of these names are ridiculous. New colours are great. Completely removing names that have been in use for twenty years aren't so great.

Exactly, I dont see why they had to change the old ones at all, they could have surely just introduced the new paints with new names, now literally every painting guide they have previously published is out of date so we'll have to buy th-.... I see what they did there.

Always love to have more options with paints. Also curious about the structure paints. Sound like fun.

I totally agree here.

Conspiracy theorist out there?

Why change names?

Was it just to get us all to 'want' new colors?

Do they take us for stupid that we will all run out an buy new paints because of a name?

Do they think we will look at the pretty new display and automatically think hell I dont have McCrag blue so I need it, even though I already have a pot and a half of Ultramarine Blue.

I think they purposfully changed the names to stop us from temporarily buying competitors colors.

Someone will eventually satisfy us with a cross reference chart. showing the equivialnt former GW paints name by name. Not long after that we will get another reference chart showing the equivilants of all GW paints to other brands.

Ask yourself this. Do we need paints that say dry? Are these actually dry pigments we need to mix like Tamaya paints or are we just to use them for dry brushing...
Does that mean we will not use the other paints for dry brushing... I see no reason to lable the paints in this way.

Paint, is pigment suspended in a medium. Depending what or how much of the medium is there we get washes and glazes.

No matter the name they call it we will use it for something else.

Could you imagine Coke or Pepsi ever changing names of their best sellers?

This whole thing screams dumb to us...

But.... like the rest of us sheeple Ill wait and buy them as they will look good on a shelf

so four drunk GW execs get together at a strip club and pow wow for a new idea on how to bilk us out of more money. One drunk says to the other I got it...

Drunkingly they wander into the dart board area and put the list on the wall and start chucking darts at it. They hold up a pot of new uber color and wherever the dart lands this is the name of the color... BTW the XV number is actually the model number of the dart board... ooops

Oh my heavens. I almost fainted. So many paints This kind of sucks though. it's easy to say:
Basecoat boltgun
Highlight Chainmail
Wash badab
Highlight Mithril

Now I have to say something way more complicated.

I'm guessing
Ironbreaker (metal) == Boltgun
Runefang steel (metal)== Chainmail
Gehennas gold(metal)== Shining Gold
Auric Armour(metal) == Mithril Silver
Hashut Copper(metal) == Dwarf Bronze
Sycorax Bronze(metal) == ??
Brass Scorpion(metal) == Brazen Brass?
Runelord Brass(metal) == ??

Might not have paid attention, but we're missing some paints here, most importantly burnished gold (which was gakky, IMO)

No black or brown glaze either.

Emperors Children - A pink, probably quite close to tentacle pink
Auric Armour(metal) - A gold Basecoat I would assume, which quite honestly sounds amazing.

I've put my guesses in bold.
I kinda like the idea that knowing the backstory helps you guess what colours are, it adds a bit of a game to buying the colours

I will feel a lot better about the name changes if there is a equivalency chart on their webpage. I will fell slightly better if it is only in a WD.

The one thing that bothers me is, if true, having the only black being a foundation paint. Foundations are so flat, and washing Badab Black-esque over grey isnt always the best opiton, that getting a good black could be a hassle.

Also I hope that Kabalite green or Sybarite green arent the Snot Green equivalent. Painting my Salamanders in Dark Eldar colors won't feel right. But dedicating a color to the Father of Darkness is at least one bonus point.

And just to keep things clear they will be providing a poster of the new paints and which ones work at which level of painting you are trying to accomplish.

All for the relatively GW price of 49.99(insert symbol of currency in local market here).

I'm kidding.

I'll add that I welcome the expanded paint range but I can';t help but wonder about some of these names.

There was only 3 things that GW needed to do to their paint range:

1) lower the price by 10%
2) Make the pots more like the Vallejo dropper bottles
3) Bring back tentacle pink

Everything else is just a mess.

Me too. GW are 2/2 in my book with the release of foundations and washes, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one, at least for the product side of things.

Just so I'm clear on this: the list above is meant to be all the paints in the new range? I had thought (based on earlier rumors) that some of the current colors were going to stay. Are they included above, with changed names, or is there another list of 'survivors'?

I guess for ongoing projects people may have to fallback on this chart:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

Though presumably (surely?) GW will actually be keeping all its main colours? Not sure on the wisdom of the 100% rename.

That being said, Reaper has alot of their own paints that match GW's stuff to. Take a gander and the paint conversion chart and have him special order what your missing.

To get their current supplier they had to sign a contract that means they can only use them atm for wargameing related things. (He has other suppliers he uses for comic books, MTG, ect.) He is considering to change suppliers agien when the contract is up, but until then he can't go to others with out breaking the agreement.

I'm also aware of the fact Reaper has their own equivalents to the GW range. My orginal post was just pointing out that for me and the people who frequent the LGS it would "suck".
=P

I already have a few reaper paints. Haven't been wild about the dropper bottles, but picked them up more for the fact that I like their "tirade system". A very cool and useful idea all-round.

What the frak.....

So, they've gotten rid of a foundation purple? And I've got to try and work out what all the new colours are, to see if they are the colours I'm using with a different name?

Looks like I'll be researching new paint names to match up my stuff all right. Just not GW products, it seems...

PS) Am I the only one to notice that in the Technical list they've added Liquid Green Stuff?

That would be an ecumenical matter...

I doubt it could happen... the rival paint companies would simply sent bodyguards.

I think they will be laughing their heads off, because all this does is entice people to their products, and abandon GW paints. Hobbyists need to have stable paint ranges, not revolving doors of colours, some re-named, some simply gone. You don't want to stare at the paint range in the shop thinking "Which colour is like the old one I used, and need to replace?" You want to get the paint, and go.

And what is really worrying is I am feeling this militant, and I've only been painting for amonth and a half...

That would be an ecumenical matter...

Seeing all the new paint names is a bit intimidating and at the same time annoying. Mainly because there are now so many paints and they are named so abysmally.

All I can say is that it really is poor form to bring these out after marketing that 'Masterclass Painting Guide' during christmas. The entire book is rendered useless because the colours will have changed (both in name and ever so slightly in shade). All it is now is another GW catalogue.
