At any rate, something that DOES annoy me is the idea that it's somehow illogical to want to play female characters in games, an exclusively male opinion as far as I can tell...

The "Less is more" rule applies here?

Hey, as a new media major with what essentially is a minor in psychology, that's one of the things I want to eventually figure out.

Well, mostly men play videogames. It is seen as kind of weird to play as a woman if you're a dude.

There are two reasons and I thought they were obvious.

Damn straight. It's rediculous how male dominated my new media classes are. I hope for a day when videogames can use sex and gender in a mature way, rather than simply pandering to 13 year old boys.

The guy who made the video has done about 9 other 'video lectures' on videogames, they're great.

You don't see this as pandering to a different audience?

I certainly do.

I don't even know what Monster Rain said (due to ignoring him) and I still have an urge to tell him to shutup. Ah well. It was probably nothing worth reading anyway.

Regardless, I like that guy's videos. And it's ahrdly like he's the only one. I mean hell, Zoey is the most popular L4D character, but strangely noone's seen that fact and thought "hrm, I wonder if we can make a non-zombie related heroine out of that concept..."

Homefront missed a good chance to play with it when they picked some generic ex-military dude instead of a civilian.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I certainly do.

The word 'pandering' is a big deal there, in contrast to the call for 'mature' handling in Fafnir's post. You can't really handle something in a mature way and pander to an audience.

Well, unless 'mature' actually just means 'we show boobs and sex' which is that not all mature style of 'mature', in which case then it is certainly pandering. But if it's 'mature' as in 'includes believable male and female characters who deal with issues with close parallels in the real world' then not so much...

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I know exactly what you're saying, and I agree with you for the most part, but I see the marketing trends that are starting to try to get adult women to buy more video games and the part of my brain that's always watching for carny tricks starts to twitch.

I agree that there is a difference in degrees between "boobs for the young men" and "believable characters of either gender" but you can't sit there and act like they don't pander with strong female characters in movies and television. (Lifetime Network, anyone?)

Oh, and another thing. I keep seeing your new avatar and thinking it is Frazzled posting.
