1) Using the 2012 dark/orange, when I looked "subscribed" or "most exalted" or "most recent" threads, most of them have their titles in orange but a few are in yellow -- why? It doesn't seem to correlate with which threads I've started, posted in, viewed, or exalted.

2) Speaking of exalting, does it do anything besides improving a thread's chances of being on the "most exalted" lists? What's the difference between exalting the thread as a whole and exalting a particular posts? And does exalting a particular post do something good for that post's author?

Also, apparently you can exalt your own posts (wait, what?). What does that do? Is it ignored? Penalized? Counting like anyone else's exalt? Does exalting yourself too much make you go blind?

3) Oh, yeah, there are exploding bullets and things next to a lot of threads -- presumably that's some indication of hotness/popularity/activity level/whatever, but I have no idea how to interpret it.....

[Edit:] And when I go back to the Introductions Forum index, all the other type is in orange but this thread is in yellow. Why the feth is it fething yellow? [headdesk]

When you are on the internet and you click on a link then your browser remembers you have clicked on that link. On a large number of websites the colour will change on that link to show that you have clicked it before. It's not even a forum thing, just websites in general. It's very common. Your browser should be able to override it if you feel the need.

The exalt feature is somewhat incomplete. Lego has it on his list to improve. Exalting a thread is recorded and moves the thread up the three exalted thread lists. Exalting a post is recorded but at the moment had no visible effect. I understand that they will both be gaining new features. The post exalts might be tied into the rep system that Lego has previously mentioned he would like to add.

As has already been said, there is a key to what the bullets and grenades mean at the bottom of every subforum.

I exalt this.

As for the folks who offered more, um, practical advice:

Thanks. The colors don't see to correlate with what I've clicked on recently, either, though -- maybe this forum somehow has a different definition of "recently"? But I thought your browser controlled that.... -- but the explanation of exalting and of where to find the exploding bullets key were very helpful. (I don't go in through the sub-forums unless I'm starting a thread, I usually go in through "subscriber" or "most exalted" or "friends' threads," and they don't have it).

And if mods want to move this to "nuts and bolts," I submit humbly to their judgment..

From what I've seen if you click someone's profile it keeps the 'clicked colour' for a pretty long time...
The thread is also already in N&B

The links will remain that yellow color as long as they are sitting in your history. So if you occasionally clear your browser history, cookies, and cache, they'll return to orange. Often a useful thing to note which threads you've been looking at and to see if it has new content.

2) Speaking of exalting, does it do anything besides improving a thread's chances of being on the "most exalted" lists? What's the difference between exalting the thread as a whole and exalting a particular posts? And does exalting a particular post do something good for that post's author?

At this moment in time? No, Exalt was a way for us as community members to sort of "police" the best of the best and put Dakka's Best Foot Forward. Exalting posts don't do anything, but I believe Legoburner (the sysadmin if you will) has plans down the road for this.

3) Oh, yeah, there are exploding bullets and things next to a lot of threads -- presumably that's some indication of hotness/popularity/activity level/whatever, but I have no idea how to interpret it.....

Here is a useful image that explains what everything does, but there is added functionality from the last Dakka Update. When the owner of a thread posts, an asterisk (*) is put above the bullet symbol to denote that they've posted again, so you can check to see if there is new content for your perusal.

Welcome to dakka and enjoy your stay!

Chicks tend to get overlooked or overly looked at, depending on what they're wearing....

I still can't find any consistent correlation between threads where I've clicked on the most recent post and threads that turn yellow.....

Clicking on a thread title turns it yellow, clicking on a most recent post doesn't.

There's no need to get so worked up about this. Does it really matter?

OF COURSE THERE'S A NEED TO GET.... well maybe not.

But that you, Velour. Finally I have an explanation that makes sense. (Although the system is still stupid....). Much appreciated
