This army is coming along rather nicely!
I really like your conversions, I may have to steal a few of them when I get to doing some vets for my Ultramarines.
I've never really liked Imperial Fists but these models look great. The black robes REALLY sets them apart.
My only minor complaint is the mold line on the left leg of that last vet pictured.

@Foda: I just noticed that mold line, but think it'll be ok if that's the only one in the army .

Also, they're not Imperial Fists, they're 'Angels of Vigilance', a DA successor chapter.

Almost done, just need help on the sword. Was thinking of doing it the blue like the cables.

I've begun work on another potential Captain model:

I like this one better so far than the other one. He'll have rivets on the legs and a loin cloth or something going off to one side, if I can gs it.

Looking good! I really like the face, the detail is really crisp. My one suggestion would be to pick out the waist cord with a tan or yellow. I like the "no baby lightning" power weapon look too. Nowadays everybody does spiderlines, just a general glow is a nice change of pace.

I created a profile just to suggest how to do studs on
the legs.

Use rounded head straight pins. You can either clip the
heads off and just glue them to the legs. Or clip
most of the pin off leaving a little shank, then
drill a tiny hole in the leg and attach the same way.

I have also heated the pin over a candle and just
pushed it into plastic models for a solid riveted look.

You can get straight pins at any sewing store. A couple
bucks for several hundred.

How are you planning to base them?

Here's what I'll be working on next. They are all currently painted Bestial Brown as the coat before the basecoat of Iyanden Darksun.

1st coat of Iyanden is done on all the marines. I've probably got another 2 coats to go before I can use the wash on them.

2nd coat done. I don't know whether to do 1 more coat or to leave it as is.

I think they're probably good as is. Really nice, amazingly clean paint jobs on these guys so far - can't wait to see more of the rank and file.

I've done a bit more work on the marines. I've done the highlights on these and washed the others with the brown wash, these ones too.

The highlights are a bit thick and a bit rushed, but I think they'll do for back row rank and file. The next bunch will be a bit nicer than these ones.

I've mostly finished the first four marines.

I am unsure about what colour(s) I should paint the pouches and grenades though. Any suggestions?

Drab Green always works for pouches and grenades.

With your color scheme, I'd say base them in dark brown

I think red pouches and grenades would work really nicely as an accent color to the scheme.

Brown or tan pouches - you've got kind of a desert scheme, so olive or black pouches wouldn't work.

OTOH, if you were punching the color saturation up to IF Yellow, then that would change things significantly.

I think I've finished the first four Marines.

I just want to know if the button on the pouches detract at all. I can't decide. If they do, I'm just going to repaint them Snakebite Leather, so it's not really hard to fix if need be.

The pouches look fine. What your models are missing is *more* brightwork. You have these earthy brown marines, and most of your detailing is very muted. So you're losing the whole point of having a muted base color. With your muted brown, you should have detail elements that just *scream* off the neutral background.

Given your base colors, I'd highlight the metal "cabling" with pure silver, the purity seals with pure red & white, and the grenades with pure green. Also, I'd go for deeper shadows, so I'd blackline a little deeper with pure black (or at least a super-dark brown).

Also, your Veteran's robes can use a bit of navy blue in the shadows for color contrast to take them deeper into the background as a darker black.

I think, blue, red or green all make good choices, but don't use more that two of those colors. One primarily and then the other for smaller details. The black robes look great against your primary color. You primary color is very striking and I'm jealous of how awesome it looks. Great technique also. My personal choices for other colors would be to continue the black and use blues.... thats just my opinion though.

I have the red for the seals and blue for cabling and power weapons. I don't want to use 'pure' colors and it'd look a busy, especially with everything a different colour. The blue is less noticable as not a lot of stuff has it, though each marine has a chest cable although the higher ranking marines will have more blue as they'll have more cabling, I think, and power weapons to make them stand out more.

I prefer the stark constrast of the black over the yellow as opposed to having some blue in the black, so I think I"ll keep it as it is.

I agree. maybe my above post was too vague on the blacks and blues. I like the real black stark contrast and the black having gray highlights. I don't think you should add blue into the black. The blue that I like that also looks fantastic against your base color is the small cabling you used on the vet sgt. that color blue looks great in the small portions that you used it and it makes great power swords too. I don't think you should add any blue to the black as shading. I think that it would was the black out some and then make it too close to the blues that you use in other areas and therefore give them more blah and less wow (technical terms I'm using here ).

The small amount of red is ok too. I would suggest only using the red on the purity seals and maybe keep from adding too many seals. I think that will look great (like your vet sgt) and not too busy at all. I think if you started adding greens all over for this and that, it would overpower your models with too many colors. In reality we all wear alot of different colors and shades most of the time, but in a 28mm world it doesn't translate well. (Ok my uniform is a gray tactical polo shirt with either camo green or black tactical pants and small gold details on the shirt and belt equipment. All the equipment is black with the exception of some silver and a smidge of red on a can... but my world is more monochromatic than most peoples). But you get what I mean already because your minis look great!

Finished four more Marines today.

That makes about a full tactical squad in total that I have finished, and a Veteran.

SoG, I think maybe you misunderstand what I was suggesting?

I was suggesting you *highlight* to pure color. The little bits of pure red & green would be tiny slivers over what are otherwise darker crimson and olive. Similarly, adding just a little bit (like a glaze) of navy in the *deepest* shadows to make them even deeper.

Your neutral base color is good, and acts as a plain canvas which allows you to do more with the model's details.

Even if you were to punch up the saturation of specific elements, they're each so small, they can't possibly dominate over the large neutral patches of the model.

Heck, you aren't even having contrasts on the shoulder pads.

It could be the pictures, but I do have highlights to pure colours as it were. The red goes to Blood Red, the blue to Ice Blue but there's not a whole lot of those colours on the models so that it is noticable.

I'd like to wait until the models are completely finished before I go back and fix or change stuff to them.

I still need to add markings and whatnot to the marines so I'll see how those look before adding more to them.
