What an insightful and well-thought out response to something that Stelek doesn't agree with.

Wait, I'm sorry. I mistook profanity and vitriol for reason and thought.

While I agree with some of what he says, his manner of saying it clearly shows that his only interest in the discussion is tearing down Gwar, Dakka, and Yakface, while making himself out to be the saviour of the 40K hobby.

Yeah he is definitely a bad influence on the game.

If I say "Timmah that post lacks support" its means something completely different than "Timmah your argument you ing er. No one in their right mind ing thinks like that you kid er." It also would say a lot about my personality, intent, and mental state.

It's a long time since I've seen a text so full of harsh insults, flaming and generally elaborating "I don't like this" into a tirade of hate and filth. I joined dakka after Stelek was banned, but I do now understand why it might be a good thing he is not around here anymore.

And @Timmah: Dressing is definitely different than talking and writing. Stelek's post makes me never want to meet him or even return to his blog. Ever. You can't do that by dressing one way or another.

Reading a single post on a blog on and developing an opinion based on that is pretty pathetic. He does a lot of good for the community despite him going off once in a while. I would be willing to bet there are a ton of people who really like what he does.

Christ. Gwar made an FAQ? What's the deal? It's because it's Gwar, and he's sort of abrasive, not anything else.
Bad for the hobby? What? Are fan made codices, converted armies or home brewed fluff bad for the hobby? No. Neither is this FAQ, and for the same reason.
Stelek disappeared inside his own arse. He had some interesting stuff to say, but the amount of self agrandising idiocy he came out with often made it hard to take in.

Also, INAT FAQ is the FAQ for adepticon. The lads that made it were dead happy with all their work, and suggested that it might be cool to use it for other tournies. How is that some sort of horrible thing?

Arrrgh. I've had a long week, and what seems like an even longer day. I try to avoid posting on Dakka when I'm irritable but seriously, people need to relax a bit. (Me, most of all, apparently. I'm going to open another bottle of ale and go look at pretty pictures in modelling and painting.)

I have no desire to listen to a harangue. If I want that I could watch MSNBC or Glenn Beck.

Truthfully, I didn't even notice Stelek was Banned. I just stopped seeing posts from him, didn't really think anything of it. And another thing, I don't think too many people are reading the user-created FAQs. And out of those who are, I think an even smaller percentage is naive enough to assume that such an FAQ is gospel. The way my gamer group does it would probably make the guys at YMDC foam at the mouth... if there's a gap in the rules, each player gives their interpretation (within reason) and then there's a roll-off. Winner's rule sticks until the end of the game.

I just think a lot of 1 timers go to Stelek's blog whenever it gets called out because of an angry post and think that is all that he does and that's who he is.

Being of Irish heritage, I understand having a quick temper. But just because you do and sometimes go off on people, doesn't mean you don't help the community too.

No matter what you say or how much you complain about his methods, he is still a very good player/strategist and he helps a lot of people with their play skill (imo). Sometimes you just gotta take the good with the bad. (and heck if the bad is funny, all the better)

I think you are overstating the effect this FAQ will have on the gaming community. After all, all you have to do is say "It's not official, look" and point at the title.

But, for some, that's not nearly as much fun as thumping their chest and pointing out that their unofficial rules and opinions are somehow more reliable than someone else's unofficial rules and opinions.

'Tis a funny post on YTTH. I think he's gotten so Dakka-deprived he's been reduced to making attacks against Dakka members in order to try to bring attention to his little haven of sycophantic posts.

The only real problem with Gwar!'s FAQ was that it went against what he's been preaching since he joined (that anything other than following the exact wording of the rules is cheating). Other than that, far more extreme rules changes are put in Proposed Rules all the time.

The idea that Gwar!'s FAQ shouldn't be because people will read it an accept it as truth would require the deletion of all non-official FAQ's, all homebrew codexes, and all YMDC answers (as going through and only deleting the fasle ones would require an ungodly amount of work).

I don't really percieve Dakka as being unable to correct older posters go. I think those that complain of that merely had an idea or two that got shot down quickly (such as Terminator Armor and Sweeping Advances).

In regards to judging Stelek based off this post in particular, this isn't that different from what I've seen of his before. He doesn't strike me as a pleasent person. At least with Gwar!, you'd get a good game as long as you didn't pick any units with broken (in the RaW sense) rules.

Yes, I know what the F stands for, and yes, I have been asked each one of those frequently. You see, people go OUTSIDE and look at the pre-release codex in their local stores. Then they come here and ask me because they know that they will get an accurate answer.

It's strange. I read more than one article in that blog, and I STILL had no desire to ever revisit it due to it seeming to be one of the biggest exercises in personal ego stroking I've seen in a while.

I think Gwars personal FAQ is fine. You can say, 'people might think it's official', but let's be honest here. Those are stupid people. And if they are that stupid, you can probably point and say, 'Look! A distraction!', and edit it with a biro whilst they're still looking for the shiny object.

It amuses me when Americans claim that they're Irish because of the great-great grandparents, ever since an Irish friend went over there, challenged several of these people to drunken fights over it, and not one of them took him up on it. He didn't return with the highest opinion of 'Irish descendants'. That's not a personal attack on anyone, just an amusing anecdote.

I've been multiple times to his blog and regret it every time. Even his non-rant posts reek of self-aggrandizement and often still take the cheap shot at Yakface(who seems to take Stelek's absolute hatred of him in complete stride), someone he hates for merely owning a site he's banned from(I have a feeling if Russ still owned Dakka, we'd be reading Russ-hate on YTTH).

I think anyone who can't read the word "unofficial" on Gwar's faq, could be just as likely to use a resturant menu as a codex. Really, there's no hope for them, let them think it's official and reap the consequences. It's not like logic could sway them anyway.

Timmah: If you really are having problems with folks not understanding the difference between fanmade FAQs and GW FAQs, you really need to watch out for those folks to pull out their Pan Fo army.

Really, I think your arguement against unofficial FAQs is a big reflection of the folks you play with.

It goes a little longer and deeper than that. If you search through the rants, he posts Jon's banning notice in toto. Jon gave a very fair and reasoned explanation for why Beetlejuice's toxic posting wouldn't be allowed on Dakka, and Beetlejuice has never forgiven him for that:

"I acted like a total ing tool, refused to modify my ing behavior (despite repeated ing warnings and ing suspensions, and now the ing site owner has the ing temerity to tell me that I'm not wanted on the ing site anymore because he won't coddle my out-of-proportion self-aggrandizing ing ego by personally babysitting me and making excuses for my behavior to the moderating team that he has help deal with the vast number of day-to-day issues that I cause. ing that Yakface !"

The amount of kiss-ass revealed in the immediate wake of his banning was really amusing. I wonder how much more kiss-ass is out there, and whether his entourage woulds still respect him if they ever got out...

If you've got the stomach for it, search out his banning. It's a hilarious read if you can find it without swimming through too much ing .

You know, Dakka forums are really like a haven amongst other websites/message boards. The community is great, and while I'm not somebody that gets easily offended, it's nice to have somewhere that isn't filled with vulgarity. Hurray for the mature minded I suppose.

Also - are there any parallels drawn between those who choose RaW over RaI and those who play for fun over those who play competitively? I've always played for fun but I can imagine in a tournament setting people could get into pretty heated arguments about rules as written.

I have to admit, the blog post was rather humorous at times, but it's a bit of a cheap shot on Gwar!. If he was within his rights to release an FAQ could be argued over (of which I have no opinion), but something tells me (prepare for a stating of the obvious) that the post is delving into something a bit deeper than this...

I thought it was hilarious. It made my day.
