Tanks for AC and BT use the pods

Reasons why: I see the AC using more tanks because of the background and the way they fight. As a chapter , Black templar are all about the CQB and i see them as using the pod to get into the enemies lines quicker. Where as i see the AC responding to the enemy by overwhleming tanks and mech power.

Im loving the way this P&M is turning out! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Mike! I've been working hard, school has been unfortunately keeping me from doing much right now though. :(

Good idea Swampy, that was my original thougt for the Claws, I just love drop pods so much, I have a slight fetish with them. Good thing I said drop pods and not DPs, that could have been awkward. xD

At present the tank loadout (not including dreadnoughts) is looking something like:

Pre-Heresy Land Raider
Land Raider Crusader
Land Raider Redeemer
Land Raider Achilles
2xLas/Plas Razorbacks
2xTwin-Linked Las Razorbacks
1xAssault Cannon Razorback
(Although the twin-linked las and assault cannon ones will be weapon swappable)
Command Rhino (Modified to look like a Damocles but no real plans to run unless I was using some reserves)

I was also thinking of using some defense line auto-cannons to make some anti-aircraft turrets for the Rhinos for use in Apocalypse settings when I might want to shoot down Valkyries and other annoying things acting as flyers.

Alternatively to, all of the Razorbacks have the capability to mount Predator turrets if I decided to do a mixed deep strike/mechanized apocalypse force.

Ah... so much I want to do but so little time at present.

Also, one more opinion:

I can get my hands on 5 sets of Forgeworld reinforced armor, should I? lol

Thanks dude, I'm hoping to get some more units painted by this weekend. I have to go grab some cans of compressed air from my friend to, which will make painting the vehicles go the fastest I think.

It's totally up to you, of course Have a good think about it and weigh up the pros and cons.

Here's a very good video that I've found about how to apply decals:

Thanks a lot Cosmic.

As for the armor, it's tough because the kits new cost as much as a Rhino does here almost and the trade offer is from a guy wanting to give me 5 kits for one of my Forgeworld Land Raider (New) which ammounts to a 20 GBP trade in my favor and it's local. The thing is, it seems weird to trade a friggin land raider for 5 sets of flimsy rhino armor lol.

The ones I can find on ebay are going for 25-30 GBP to so I am thinking if I had to, I could re-sell them.

Decisions, decisions.

I will do my best from memory, but I can't recall any in-depth tactica from the IA books regarding the 'Claws force organisation. I do know however that they had a near infinite supply of Rhinos and considered them to be entirely disposable (Vindis, Razorbacks included) . They had the usual low numbers of Termi armour and LRs as they were unable to manufacture these, but padded their assaults with large numbers of bikers and Dreadnoughts.

So I guess it's up to you, if you want a fluff-adherent army then go with the tanks. There were also some really nice non-codex units that Huron designed as well, the Corpse-Takers and Retaliators. Corpse-Takers were squads of Apothecaries tasked with harvesting the gene-seed of enemy Space Marines. Retaliators were Huron's 'right hand', and during the Badab War acted as the spearhead of his assaults. Styling a couple of squads to represent these guys and then giving them a unique Rhino/Razorback could be an idea. Don't forget there are the Tiger Claws as well if you wanted a bit more diveristy, 4500 points can be a lot to paint in the same scheme!

e; I should probably mention that my Carchs are a drop pod assault force, and my Raptors an infiltrate/mechanized force. They both have upsides and downsides, the Raptors have greatly reduced 'stamina' due to lightly-armoured vehicles, fewer and lighter armoured troops. To field enough vehicles for them costs a lot of points, which decreases the amount of well-equipped infantry and Elites you can take.
However they are extremely fast, flexible and can adabt extremely quickly allowing you to create a significant challenge for almost any other opponent without tailoring your list beforehand.
Carchs are a lot less flexible, and have no vehicles except for an optional LR that I take if there is a lot of enemy armour on the field. However due to the cheapness of pods and the lack of vehicles I can fit huge numbers of Terminators and special weapons. I only have two tactics with them though-
1. Screen and tie up mobs with my Hunters, Termis chew through the highest threat targets such as heavy weapons and armour. Dreads hit the flanks and try to split the enemy into three manageable chunks that my Termis can just wade through one by one.
2. Drop pod everything in as close as possible and try to Blitzkrieg; smash straight through the heart of the enemy line and then break them up from within their own deployment zone.

They are both fun, and both are effective in non-tourney games (I don't play competetively), the drop pods would get boring if you played them all the time though. There are is only so much you can do with one-use transports. Mechanized is more competetive, but really you want to field a fun army. A semi-mechanized army with specialised units can be a hell of a lot of fun. If only Razorbacks could have Flamestorms!

e2; Also tanks are way cooler than drop pods. They both suck to paint, but at least with the tanks you have something a lot better at the end that you will actually use. You can always proxy drop pods with bottles/styrofoam/card if you want to try them out.

Hey Dog!

The problem with some of the non-codex units, is they were designed for use in the Tyrant's Legion army, which was not the Astral Claws proper during the Badab War as they were not deployed in the way the standing companies were aka non-codex. I do have a unit of Vanguard converted with shields that do a good job representing retaliators to roll around with Commodus however.

As far as Dreadnoughts and tanks go, I have tons; I've never actually stuck myself to one particular theme, usually just adding in as I go and having a flexibility to do a lot and play a big game if I wish of up to 10k points.... lol

I do LOVE painting tanks and dreadnoughts though, I'm getting some compressed air this weekend so I should be doing a bunch of vehicle painting.

I suppose I'll stick with my original plan of an armor heavy force, my other intention with my astral claws was to be able to field them as the Siege Vanguard list in the Imperial Armour 10.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I like the idea of your Carachadons to, sounds like the way I operate my Black Templars. They drop in very close to the enemy and tear them apart in close combat as if they were paper.. gotta love those re-roll to hits in 5th edition. I thought Carachadons would have worked very well as Black Templars as well, given the ability to throw Terminators furious charge etc..

Raptors are cool, I always liked the idea of an all infiltrating space marine army!

I'm still hoping to pick up 2 more vindicators to make 3 and a few more predators and possibly a whirlwind or to to complete the armored task force for apocalypse... also a thunderhawk is 100% my next purchase when I FINISH these models I have.

E: Not much of a proxy person but I got plenty of pods already xD More on the way also... *whistle*

Disclaimer: I really like Forgeworld but these casting issues are starting to annoy me quite a bit. After you send a good ammount of coin on an item, you expect it to be good. In a restraunt, if your food was not what it was supposed to be (your steak had a bite taken out..) you would request another steak, a refund or more depending on the situation. I have once before had to complain to Forgeworld and they were great about replacing the items with issues. We'll see how they are this time after an order that could have paid a mortgage.. *sigh*

Below are the problems that bugged me the most and as such, I hope they will do something about it. It's very annoying to find infantry issues during assembly or vehicle/dreadnought issues when cleaning up and getting ready to paint.

Contemptor Dreadnought: Left leg has miscast, large Horizontal indented line on the left leg, Right leg resin is thin and cracking. Slight miscast on the torso of the model.
Contemptor Dreadnought 2: Left leg has miscast, large horizontal indented line on the Left leg, Left Shoulder has too thin of resin on the front, resulting in cracks and holes in BOTH.
Contemptor fist: Skulls on one fist are completely worn out in terms of detail.
Mk II Assault Squad: Total of 3 jump packs were missing the bottom pieces entirely, this makes them look awkward as they are missing the bottom part of the backpack.
Mk V Assault Squad: Several helmets had resin obscuring detail on the front of the models and bunched up under the helmets.
MKIII Iron Armor: Several helmet grills were filled with resin, obscures the detail.
Boarding Assault Set: Graviton gun was so badly warped it snapped.
Red Scorpions set: The torso with the skull reliquaries in one of the kits had a loss of detail, oddly enough the other one was fine.
Space Marine Character Conversion Set: The Sword was broken.

Guess I'll wait till monday and see if they can send me out at least some of this in replacement. I won't lie, it would be nice to have some more parts to work with, but I'd prefer 100% parts the first time. Then again, my last order (Templar Shields, pads and ven dread stuff) was perfect.

E: Just remembered they are open Saturday morning @ 4AM EST!

Ive noticed that about Forgeworld. When i ordered my elysians -> Phantine models* i got bent lasguns, missing arms, and a few miscast heads. Since im off at uni and dont have a landline to call them and my carrier doesnt do overseas calls it was a hassle emailing them every other day. Eventually they just stopped responding to my email even after i sent them pictures and numbers of the missing cast and spure. Its left a bitter taste in my mouth about FW and i am hesitant to order from them again.

* The way i completed my models was by contacting a fellow member on another 40k board and giving them a list of the missing parts. Since they had a large elysian arny , they sent me the few missing parts for free. Sometimes the community really helps out a member in need

Yeah, they are good but I am annoyed. Sorry you had that experience bud, that sucks...

I wasn't thinking on Saturday and spent a total of FOUR HOURS on hold for them Saturday and every time my call went through, it would hang up. Suffice to say... this was well over $100 in mobile fees and I didn't realize till my phone got cut-off.......

I plan to call them back tomorrow and tell them how annoyed I am both at the messed up parts and what happened Saturday. It seems like they had some phone issues.

Oh well....

Well, I stayed up all night to talk to Forgeworld, after another 40 minutes of long distance from my cell.. (Another $40 + what I ended up being charged saturday... it's slowed I could have got 1/2 a thunderhawk.....

They are going to recast the individual pieces and make moulds for them to send me the replacements. I found that pretty funny, it will take them 7-10 days. They even tried to do the same for my Contemptors, offering to recast the individual pieces and I declined that firmly. After the cash I've spent with them, I would expect the models replaced and the good news is, they are. There was no way I was going to rip apart assembled pieces to replace pieces with too thin of resin and damage the entire model.

I guess they are not as good with replacements as they once were. I remember the days where you would call in and they would just send you the full kits if you had any issue.

On another note, I have been thinking of my next non-marine army. I'm liking the idea of an Imperial Guard mixed unit special forces airborne cavalary with all valkyries and vendettas. I might go with the Elysian list all mounted up but have a squad of hostile enviroment cadian, a squad of death korp, a squad of elysian, squad of tallarn, vostroyan, catchan etc... I just like the idea of 9ish Valkyries/Vendettas in 1500-2000 point army.. lol

That's right, stick it to them and make them own up to their mistake At least you were able to talk to someone (unlike me )

IG airborne is a really cool theme and list! Im working slowly on my Phantine 44th Skyborne (1 squad and 1 valk at a time with the tanith) too and i highly recommand the elysian models. The idea of a mixed squad airborne assault from each of the differnt regiments is a cool idea. The Catchan theme also fits in with the air mobile theme as well (al la Vietnam). Marbo is already Rambo if you mix the letters around If you do it, it be cool to have a visual theme of them decending upon a new world / Battlezone (blown up tanks , barbed wire, ect on the bases). I hope this idea comes to fruition

Airborne Guard are the best. If I ever get my Guard army rolling, it'll have Valkyries and air-dropped Hellhounds as my main line units.

FW Elysians are absolutely a joy to paint, I have a SWS Flamer/demo charge squad and they were probably the most fun to paint of any models I own. Do it for sure.

Yes!!!!! I love it, the barbed wire and stuff on bases, I'll totally do it, thank you for the idea.

I really like the Hostile environment Cadians as well, they would look cool fighting side by side with respirator elysians.

As soon as I catch up on some projects and seminars, I'm hoping to spend a few solid days over the weekend painting and updating my blog here with some new content though.

As for Forgeworld, they have dissapointed me. To the point, I plan to begin casting my own pieces, since in Canada as long as it's for personal use it's legal. ^.^

I'll probably run a Hellhound and Devil Dog for a 1350 list, the latter because my army is a little short on >6'' anti-tank. I'm packing as many flamer/heavy flamer templates into the army as I can, because my friends play drop assault Marines, footslogging Orks and gribbly Nids (muhahaha!)

By air-dropped I mean the models will be converted to be lightweight and (in fluff) carried by cargo net underneath my Valkyries. On the battlefield the squadron will deploy as normal. I also scratchbuilt a Leman Russ Vanquisher to be lightweight enough to be air-dropped in fluff for my long-range anti-tank purposes.

Sadly I only have one squad of guys and the Russ to my name, but hopefully over my Christmas holidays I'll add a Valkyrie, Devil Dog and Sentinels to that.

Oh yeah, pics of the scratchbuilt Russ: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-40138-17673_Leman%20Russ%20Scratchbuild.html

That is a pretty sweet Leman Russ man, I really love the use of the old rhinodoors on the front as a hatch. Did you make the turret to? It looks really nice.

Sounds like a solid plan on the models for x-mas to, were you going to get drop sentinels or just normal ones?

Thanks man! I appreciate the compliments. I'll probably touch it up a bit over my Thanksgiving break from university - do highlights, touch up the camo and weather the tracks a bit.

As for the sentinels, probably just normal ones :( I cannot tutor enough children to afford a pure Forgeworld army and pay for school. They'll be armed with missile launchers, but I'll probably doodle around with them to make them seem lighter and more airmobile. Something with the canopy roofs like what FW did with their Drop Sentinels. This IG army is going to be my baby, more than my Marines will ever be.

speaking of forge world, has anyone ever tried out their Renegades? I am going to start an X-Mas army of them!

Sounds like a fun conversion project, I would probably chop the legs down a bit and bulk out the canopy a little more if it was me. I'm kind of sad I've devoted myself to another marine project when I'm getting so excited for Imperial Guard.... :/

A guy I know has an army of them along with plague zombies, they look pretty good. I don't know how variety there is with the models though. Definitely a cool army to start..

Willing to entertain offers on the items above as I'd prefer not to sell via Ebay and can definitely take a few dollars off for a Dakkanaut.

Once again, nothing to do with my Astral Claws but one of my other marine projects, behold...

A full battle company and more in... BITZ!!!

I have to give a HUGE HUGE HUGE Thank you to my friend Cosmic for supplying this. This is an entire Space Marine Battle Company + Scouts + terminators + Dreadnought..... all sorted out in bags, all taken off sprues, cleaned of all mould lines, bolters drilled.

Cosmic, thank you for doing all of the hard work for me and hooking me up with this amazing project. Presently, this is going to become the Ultramarines 2nd Company as depicted during the Fall of Damnos. God, they will be sexy! (For Ultras.. )

CHECK IT OUT!!!YAAAA!! THANKS COSMIC!!!

Also, it seems this blog is kind of evolving into more of my personal space to share my Hobby and modelling sort of things.

So, just throwing it out there, I've also started my next army! It's an Elysian drop list, but not using many Elysian troopers.

I ordered some amazing sculpts from Studio McVey, some great minis from Urban War and a couple of other very good guard stand-ins to begin. I do plan to also have the majority of troops being hostile environment Cadians with at least a single squad of Elysians but mostly the army will have variety. The air force is looking to be something like 4 Valkyrie, 3 Vendetta and 3 Vulture @ 3k points with exactly 100 soldiers! I'm excited to start this one to.

Long story short, I friggin love 40k and I tend to start and resume things a lot. ^.^

Wow that's a nice package. Even had all the bad parts done for you such as clipping and mold line removal. Lucky...wish all GW stuff came like that so all you had to do is assemble and paint. Looking forward to seeing your Ultras' painting progress.

xD Thank you very much. I wish much the same thing, that's why I was so keen to get my hands on this box of uber goodness. It means I can assemble and paint when I begin on them and oh, it will be glorious.

Looks like I might not be doing much for awhile, very stressed and depressed and my wife is being pretty heartless to the point I've developed anxiety which I never had before and had several attacks tonight. The first? After I got so upset I kicked my box of astral claws and bitz across my room and still cannot find the pieces.

I'm sad. More sad that my wife couldn't care less I almost died.

This has nothing to do with this, just needed to talk somewhere..
