It is the Big C's head, sans Ultramarines symbols.

It is my favorite head in the entire space marine range. Couldn't think of one more fitting to use for Corien Sumatris!

They also both have the initial CS. I have a Cato Sicarius stand in with my army as well, I'll post him up later on today. He's also a custom model and I did the Arch Centurion Commodus.

I changed my mind, I want to be him!! lol He looks amazing, alot of detail to paint.

Im not a fan of the cape tho. Everything else on the model is epic, but the cape is too plain and doesn't flow with the model

Thanks man, I love the backpack capes unfortunately, my whole vanguard squad has them. ^.^

10/29

Hey all,

Another update here:

Arch-Centurion Carnac Commodus, Commander of the XXIII Tyrant’s Legion, the Bloody Scourge of Shaprias

I plan to make a retaliator squad to go along with him, but for now in Apocalypse he goes with Sumatris and his Vanguards.

P.S. Forgot to drill his pistol out.

First shot:

Second shot:

Third shot:

Fourth shot:

His cloak and armor were scratched up in order to make it as ragged and battle damaged as possible. His armor also was previously MKVIII from a Grey Knight kit so all of the symbols were filed off as well.

There is another HQ to follow later today when I upload the images, Commander Diomedes. He is based upon Captain Sicarius in terms of rules and is the third of my 'Captain' style HQs for the army with Sumatris and Commodus being the other two. There is also Huron, Valthex and and as yet undecided Librarian based on the Sevrin Loth figure as well as my Master Apothecary, using the rules for Pelas Shan which are posted on the Forgeworld site.

I also have a lot of Cities of Death sprues lying around and I was going to base all of the figures similar to the HQs with the ruined floor sections, pieces of rubble etc.. Just wondering if anyone had any feedback specifically on the basing if I go that route. The HQs are mounted on an entire floor section to help build their presence on the battlefield but most units the rubble would be modelled around how they stand for the most part.

Funny but true, I assembled most of the army (infantry) but I forgot that I had the pre-heresy assault arms and stuff until I was doing my HQs so I plan to go back. I also did finish the Assault/Vanguards, but I used my Black Templar Storm Shields and I am going to instead take them off and use my old metal Terminator storm shields so the templar shields do not over-whelm the squad. These are the smaller cross-shaped shield and the normal shield shaped storm shield from the original terminators.

I did make your guy up, but I don't really like the sword he has, but I am still seeing what else I find. Some of the nicer items I tried not to re-use the same torsos, heads, weapons throughout characters/sergeants to keep it unique.

I also did some work on the motorpool for the army, just trying to figure out how to best do the 5 Razorbacks and the Command Rhino I am working on. I plan to use the Stormraven Turrets for 3 of the Razorbacks, the twin linked assaults and twin linked lascannons and I was going to mount the single shot lascannon from the bastion set along wit a pintle mounted twin linked plasma gun for my other two.

The problem I have been running into is figuring out exactly how to cut the Stormraven turret so that I can just put a more automated and enclosed housing over it; or build in marine gunners for those 3 Razorbacks. Ironically, the Damocles Rhino was the easiest as I had a Whirlwind turret kicking around from a lot I got from someone and between the big sensor dish there and the old side armor from the metal vindicator kit and armored back door, it is looking very good.

Thanks a lot. I love them to even though they are traitors.

Update 10/30:

Started painting the first tactical squad 'claw'. I'm about 1/2 done these guys and the lessons I learned in the coloring I plan to use throughout the army will help me with my other squads. The blue takes 3-4 light layers to get the dark color and that was after applying it over a grey base. The gold became a little bright on a few shoulder pads as well, but I was trying different color schemes as I painted.

I plan to clean them up Sunday afternoon and touch up the models with chainmail again to have the armor cleaned up before I give the models a nice wash of badab black.

All in all, I'm amazed I spent as long as I did painting since I've only touched a brush once in the past 7 months and that was to do the Dreadfleet terrain with my wife.

Good night all!

Just to have to add in as well, the Astral Claws transfer sheet looks simply amazing. I've never bothered with transfers, but Forge World made a very nice sheet of stickers!

10/30: Commander Diomedes

The third of my Captain style HQs is Diomedes. Based upon the very same named hero from the Illiad. His rules are the same as Sicarius aka as counts-as-Sicarius.

I plan to do some more painting today, but for some reason I've been obsessed with hazard stripes and getting them right on all the chain-bayonets and chainswords which is definitely holding me back.

Cheers guys.

Thanks mate, my goal was to make sure each marine had their own individual sort of look and personality in each squad. I plan to when I am finished, have a nameplate on each base with the name of the marine and squad they belong to. That is a little bit down the road.

All the encouragement is appreciated guys.
I'll be back with more late

Almost finished with the first squad, going to apply decals to them later.

They are intended to break into combat squads usually and the white/blue knee-pads denote the combat squad.

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you noticed the use of the 2nd edition backpacks. I tried to use various themes to tie my squads together without deviations in color schemes too much. At present, backpacks and shoulder pad patterns will be how I differentiate the 3 tactical squads; which truthfully seem more like Sternguard..

Thanks for the link man, all support is appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, does anyone have any advice for applying transfers to shoulder pads? Might sound dumb but I've always invested in shoulder pads with designs and I'm having some issues with transfers... lol mainly in getting them to sit flat.

Before you get them anywhere near the water, make tiny slits on opposite corners of the transfer where you feel the transfer will need to 'bend' around the concave of the shoulderpad. Apply a dab of gloss varnish to the pad, then get the transfer on as quickly as possible as it will start drying almost instantly. Use a scalpel/hobby knife to move it into position, or the top of a paintbrush. I've found the actual brush itself to soak up the water on the transfer and dry it much faster, leaving it stuck in the wrong place.

Check out youtube, there are lots of really helpfull tutorials for transfers.

Excellent man, that's exactly the kind of advice I think I needed. I've been using a paintbrush and I found the transfer was as you said, getting dry too fast and sticking in the wrong place.

I'm thinking I'll hold off on transfers until I grab some varnish this weekend to so I can varnish the minis after transfers are applied, because the few I got on, I found one little nick and I lost 1/2 the transfer. Now I remember why I never used these, I suck with them!!!

I'll try to get some resulted this weekend and hopefuly have some gloss to spray on after I am done as well and seal the minis. ^.^

Thanks Dog!

I've actually been having some issues deciding lately how exactly I want to handle the army. I originally envisioned it as a full mechanized force, which in total at 4500 points had Land Raider (Normal, Achilles, Crusader & Redeemer), 5 Razorbacks, 2 Contemptors and a rhino. I've also been debating having it run as a full drop pod army as I have a total of 8 drop pods available.

My other project is my Black Templars (Which are fun to field both in pods and in tanks) but I've got them sidelined until the new Codex comes out, so I don't want to do much with them.

I've also got what likely seems to be Ultramarines 2nd Company as my next project after my Astral Claws...

So my problem?

I'm not sure exactly what route I want to take with my Astral Claws. I've always enjoyed drop pods and I've used them since 3rd edition. I have also always used my tanks between marine armies, but once I commit them to the silver Astral Claws theme they would only 'look' right with my Grey Knights.

The Astral Claws will likely be my predominant army upon completion, but I'm not wanting to take my entire motorpool and color it all Astral Claws if I would end up using Drop Pods predominantly (Which I find look best without any ornamentation or colours).

I don't play many tournaments anymore, so I am not worried about that and if I did play any, it's no big deal to use parts from my other armies.

What do you guys think, predominantly mechanized with tanks or drop pods?
