Off the top of my head, it's been stuff like True Blood, Glee, iCarly, Squid Game that I've never gotten into and in terms of animation, I've never been able to get into stuff like Johnny Test or Legend of Korra (despite being into the og Avatar), Hunter x Hunter, Sword Art Online.

Animation wise it’s most of Anime.

I get why others enjoy it, but it’s largely left me cold. Though the more I think about it, the more I realise I have enjoyed a fair amount (Ghibli, Akira, Ulysses 31, Guyver to name a few)

But the long running stuff? It’s just not for me.

Stargate SG-1 my mates rave about it but despite trying to get into it I just felt myself wondering if they were in the local park.

Lucifer - supernatural cop show. Should be perfect but Tom Ellis’ bizarre fake English accent and weird pronunciation meant I could get past the fourth episode.

What more do you need? They do a fairly good job of showing a crew caught up in this and with limited knowledge of wider world, though obviously can't keep that going and branch out into 1 1/2 of the other factions (Mars government gets no screen time, belter factions some, earth gov gets a lot).

Anime pretty firmly taught me that 26 episodes is about as long as anything really needs to be. It CAN be longer, but generally needs to be exceptional to make the cut. Though a lot of the classic long running stuff just suffers from content bloat. They were making 20 minute episodes every single week while an author killed themselves to write 16 pages of story in the same time that covered about 10 minutes of animation. That's why the old stuff is filled with things like filler arcs and overlong dramatic pauses to buy as much time as possible for the author to finish the scene.

Now that things are seasonal and shows go on breaks for sometimes years at a time the actual shows are generally better paced. The issue now is just that because its popular we get EVERYTHING regardless of quality. All the cheap cash grab shows pour in and you have to filter down to what's actually worth watching among the sea of "that time I woke up and found myself in a magic world as a pastry oven" and other drivel.

As long as you don't take it too seriously (and why should you? The show doesn't take itself seriously either) SG-1 is a fun ride.

As for Lucifer, it's not just the fake accent. It's the whole setup. The source material is so rich and rife with storytelling opportunities. And the best they could come up with is a buddy-cop show?

Though part of what makes them good in the first place is that the creators know this is their one shot and tell their story. There's no shortage of great shows, anime or not, ruined with the magic words "they wanted a second season" without a plan to do so.

That links back the Firefly comment. Part of its magic is definitely that it didn't go on too long. It definitely would have eventually grown middling, but that's not the suffering it inflicted on us.

There is overall definitely a point in some shows where it’s clearly ongoing because Stacks And Stacks Of Cash.

Here in the UK, we’ve produced a load of relatively short lived sitcoms which, probably because they were short lived, remain very well thought of.

Examples? The Young Ones (12 episodes) Bottom (18 Episodes, plus 4 live stage shows), Fawlty Towers (12 episodes), Black Books (18 episodes), Spaced (2 series, 14 episodes), Father Ted (25 episodes) to mention but a few.

All stone cold classics, very funny, none even came close to outstaying its welcome.

But, there are others which just seem to drag on and on and on. Mrs Browns Boys (awful), Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps (frankly inexplicable), My Family (funny and charming at the beginning, soon wore thin), Last of the Summer Wine (a single joke, which wasn’t all that funny to begin with, 295 episodes. 295!!!!!

HOLD up we aren't talking bad of Last of the Summer wine!

Also some shows manage to keep their charm long term - though its rare. Only Fools and Horses is one I'd hold up as lasting the test of time!

Also lets not forget Father Ted didn't keep going because the lead actor, Dermot Morgan, sadly passed away right after finishing the 3rd season.

If it is an anime original? sure. But most anime these days are adaptations of manga or light novels, and it is very rare that a manga or light novel series is short enought to fit inside the 12-13 standard cour season.

Indeed, I love the opening theme. I also love the Season 2 version of the theme. It’s really evocative.

9 seasons, 210 episodes would suggest so, however I usually avoid sitcoms for the most part.

I recently got into manga (literally this year, but I've read 200+ titles) and then I've watched a fair amount of adaptations.

I don't think the anime 'genre' is well understood by western audiences that are only familiar with the super popular stuff, such as Dragon Ball Z. Very few anime are complete originals. Most are advertisements for the manga or light novels, both of which are honestly just YA stuff riddled with cultural/genre specific tropes. Still, Japanese entertainment is a completely different ecosystem when compared to the west and failing to take that into account will lead to confusion and frustration. As far as 'adult' or mature entertainment goes, Anime is definitely lacking in general, especially when it comes to the hyper popular stuff like One Piece, JJK, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc, but I would say the same is true of western media when we've suffered through reality shows for the better part of two decades.

Out of what I've watched recently.

Frieren has outstanding animation and a solid story, despite generic elements such as the Demon King and nations. If you look into Japanese fantasy enough, demons are everywhere and poor worldbuilding as is poor world-building like the 'Northern' and 'Southern' nations.

Solo Leveling started out as a Korean web novel and is just clever enough to get past a horde of generic elements, but I can't recommend it. The Chronicles of Narnia (particularly, The Magician's Nephew, The Horse and His Boy, and The Silver Chair) handle mature concepts better.

I dropped Chainsaw Man after two episodes and only watched it because I love a song from the seires. I have no problem calling it trash.

Bocchi the Rock! is great, but definitely not for everyone. It's a crazy adaptation to me. Someone decided to take a 4-Koma manga and create amazing rock songs for it.

Spoiler:

Girls Band Cry is in the same vein, but it's an anime original. IIRC, Toei recruited actual musicians instead of voice actors for the show and ASFAIK, they've dropped multiple rock albums already for the in-universe band. It's as if Gorillaz had an introductory anime.

Spoiler:

Apothecary Diaries is basically Sherlock Holmes x ancient Chinese Imperial Palace court drama. Unlike Bocchi, the manga is better and the anime doesn't really add anything to it.

Dandadan has some excellent animation and the story isn't completely generic, but it's still pretty standard anime fare. The opening song by Crazy Nuts is great though.

I think the biggest problem with anime for western audiences is that it's simply not for adults. Most of the content is clearly direct at the YA audience and the high school setting is pretty much standard across all genres. That something like Frieren actually has all 18+ characters (eventually) is novel.

For me, the big one is Big Bang Theory. In theory I should love this show because I would get almost all of the jokes. But I want to strangle Sheldon every time he opens his mouth. As someone who is on the Spectrum, it bothers me that they try to play his autism for laughs. And really, he doesn't even come across as someone who's on the Spectrum - he's just a huge donkey-cave.

BBT is also pretty cringey.

Was watching the first season again as it popped up on Prime, and the boys are just pretty awful.

Nobody ever calls Howard out on his repeated and insistent sexual harassment, instead just sort of laughing.

Raj is a pretty one dimensional character and never really expands from it.

Sheldon as mentioned apparently isn’t meant to be on the spectrum, but one suspects that’s just to dodge accusations of mindless writing.

And the other one, whos name I can’t remember right now? Just needs to learn no means no. Pestering someone to date you isn’t cool.

Young Sheldon however is bloody charming, where we see his family supporting and encouraging him. Especially Meemaw, who is one of my favourite comedy creations, perfectly portrayed by Annie Potts.

Did you read the manga for it? I find the panel layouts outstanding and a lot of twists throughout the story are extremely well done. I don't think the anime captures what really makes the manga so popular, but I also think the series as a whole suffers from a bit of a slow start that the first season just barely starts to escape from.

I’ve seen half the episodes and the only one I liked was the wine episode. I just find the humor as unfunny as Seinfeld’s, and the characters generally unlikeable.

Yeah, the manga really starts hitting it's stride a lot more once it goes further past the idea of the Gun Devil being the big baddy that is initially set up for Aki's motivations. Though you have to be able to handle the main character suffering through a lot of stuff because MAN does Denji not catch a break lol.

It's a lot like Babylon 5 that way IMO. Kind of a forgettable first season, and you end up wondering what the point even is. But at the end of season 1, things start to get interesting and then season 2 just takes off.

I have a hard time starting shows that have many seasons under their belts. So stuff like Lost, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men just don't happen. People are surprised that I've never seen Mad Men given my occupation. But it just feels like A LOT, even if I can watch an episode at a time and stop whenever I want. I guess at some point I'll break down and start it.

Season 3 is an absolute masterpiece and IMO Lynch's magnum opus.

Having said that, I completely understand if some can't get through it. He very intentionally feths with the audience to piss them off.

But once you let it settle and think about it, Lynch has a lot to say about a lot of things. Especially about the state of the US in the 21st century. It reset how I view movies and TV by making me remember that it's not all about my wants and expectations being satisfied. Art should challenge you.

My god, the (effectively dual) ending. It's "here's what you want" and "here's what I'm actually gonna give you". And the second is such a kick in the nuts.

I never said I hated it, or Lynch for that matter, that is Lil Trexy having a moment when someone doesn't like what he likes it seems. I don't really have anything bad to say about Twin Peaks it just didn't connect. It was well crafted and is understandable why it is held in high regard but didn't really vibe with me, which I thought was the point of this thread.
