So, 8th edition comes to a close, and we've gotten a lot of new resculpts for characters. I thought I'd run a poll to see what everyone thought was the best resculpt.

Goddamn they've released some beautiful updates haven't they.

How do you choose between Gazza, Abaddon, Mephiston, Szeras or Bile?!

On moon miranda.

Abaddon followed by Ghaz are probably my favs. Abaddon's new model is just outstanding, and Ghaz (while bigger than I think he should be) looks pretty insanely Orky.

Shrike in particular is...awful, GW should feel bad for releasing it and the sculptor should feel bad for just...everything about it, I've never played Raven Guard and I own the old Shrike model, it's awesome, but the new one has none of the dynamism of the original, in general has a more Tau visual aesthetic, and the emo hair is stupid.

Mephiston manages at least to retain some of that 2E atmosphere while basically just being better proportioned. None of the other characters really stand out to me much either way, while the other updated SM's in particular feel very generic/same-ey, mostly just adding additional busy detail or adjusting proportions.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Shrike is... a change, some people might love him, others will hate him, he's very much not just "the same but better" which most of the updates are. take ragnar or mephistion, if you didn't have anything for scale and didn't know what subtle signs to look for, you'd never know it was a primaris update. shrike is an attempt to go in a differant visual direction. obviously some people won't like that. it's too much change. while it's the same character on paper, it's, visually NOT the same character

The new Abaddon sculpt is really great, and the options in the kit make it very easy to use for a chaos lord of your own invention.

Drazhar is decent, but somewhat spoiled by a stupidly large scenic base, and the fact that he doesn't look special enough; he just looks like a Klaivex with more tassels.

I think the Abaddon model is good for a terminator... but the proportions are still pretty wacky when compared to a human.

Definitely Ghaz, if only he was slightly bigger than a meganobz. The huge thing that he is now is just ridicolous but the sculpt is amazing.

I agree, I can't stand scenic bases and of course GW seems to be obsessed with putting everything on scenic bases these days.

I don't understand why people are mad about Ghaz being big. It's weirder that Abbadon's as big as he is, surely?

Abbadon by a country mile. Only complaints are the trophy rack, which is far too wide (incidentally which is corrected in the “balance” of the mini by putting a pair of wings on him. Mine is converted to be a DP) and, mainly as they wanted to make it detachable; the cloak. It’s excellent but it’s connection points make zero sense with adding more fur, like why do you have a pelt on one shoulder then nothing?

Other than those two minor bits, one of the best recent sculpts.

Abbadon hands down. It's an absolutely amazing model on it's own merits, but also a good re-imagining of the classic model. Also, it's own of the few Terminator models that looks anatomically reasonable.

Even during the Crusade and Heresy Abbadon was described as being much larger than an average Astartes, and that's before he got roided up by the power of the warp. However, I agree Ghaz should be big and I don't get why anyone would be mad about that.

He was already the biggest ork model and certainly larger than an average astartes, more than twice a tac marine in volume. It's now way too big even lorewise: being the biggest ork doesn't mean he has to be 10x the size of a nob, 2x or 3x would be more realistic and appropriate.

I wouldn't say "mad", it's a cool model, but he looks more like a dreadnought than an infantry character, also because it ends up with him having silly rules that allow him to be independently targeted where a Primarch or Abaddon or a CSM Daemon Prince cannot be

NA, imo. Abandon comes closest, but that trophy rack, the faces on Drachn'yen and his hair, fur, etc. just don't look "right" to me.

I think it has to be Abaddon for me. A very worthy candidate for even needing a new sculpt, and really makes his status clear within the armies of Chaos.

He's proud, commanding, majestic, but there's that power and immediacy in his presence. Plus, he makes an excellent mirror to Guilliman.

agreed he looks like a dark mirror of guilliman, which was intended when they designed the mini and they did such a great job with it

I actually really like Shrike. The emo haircut is perfect for Raven Guard, and I like the proportions on Primaris models anyway. The old model just looked like a regular Captain with a jump pack.

My vote has to be for Szeras simply because it's such a powerful story-telling diorama. Everybody else is "big snarling beast" or some variation on "knight in shining armor". But you get so much from Szeras. He's not interested in the kill, he's focused on the experiment he's doing with the flesh he's siphoning off his victim. That implies so much about his methods and goals and personality. I'm not even up to date on the Necron fluff since their update in 5th. I don't know anything about Szeras, but I totally get his whole deal based on this model.

A close second for me in this regard is the new Fabius Bile if you include his servant. You get that he's not interested in fighting, he's just here for parts.

For me it was between Szeras and Mephiston, with Mephiston winning out.

Abaddon and Ghazgkull are both cool models, but just too big for my tastes.
