Hello Everyone. I just picked up 40k again after a number of long years and picked up my old chaos warband. Been a long time since I painted, but I think I'm picking it up quickly. let me introduce you to my cheesy fluff!

<The Blackthorns>

"Betrayers of the traitorous, Pharisee of the deceiving, the Blackthorns are a band of selfish, narcissistic murderers. Expelled from, or escaped from, a number of different war-bands and chapters,
they are concerned only with the self. They do whatever it takes to further themselves and to gain the favor of their preferred dark gods. They vow only that they will ever be a thorn in the sides of those who dared to ostracize them.

Even among the most villainous followers of chaos, the Blackthorns are feared and renowned for their treachery.

The armies of the Blackthorns are hardened and tested constantly by the others in their own ranks. The weak do not survive, leading the Blackthorns to be small in number.
They do not trust, they do not speak openly and they do not think much of cooperation without gain. Though selfish and conniving, they will come united when faced with the slaves of the dead emperor.
Obsessed only with the self, they frequently betray one another as has come to be expected of them.

Desperate to stand out, they vary the colors of their armor whilst sticking loosely to the scheme, hoping to attain the infamy and recognition they deserve.
They prefer to operate in smaller groups of veterans and elites, as they are known to break formation easily when faced with enemy fire, preferring to sacrifice one another than to have their rise to power halted prematurely.
As a result, the Blackthorns prefer to operate infiltration and sabotage missions behind and beneath enemy lines to full frontal conflict.

The paranoid marines of the Blackthorns each turn to a god of their own choice, uninterested in the beliefs of others.
Not a great many Blackthorn marines exist as a result of the culture in the warband, and recruitment is slow. Many of the numbers are made up by cultists and renegade guardsmen, driven to frenzy by fanatical Dark Apostles.

Their warlord is a Chaos Lord by the name of Salem Gamorrah. The longest reigning master of the Blackthorns, he is constantly attacked by his own, those who thirst for his place and those who have grown too big for their boots. Previous masters have been murdered, sacrificed, usurped. This is how Salem himself came to power, but with unmatched martial prowess and brilliant instincts his has proven nigh impossible to outwit. Will he retain his powerful "bloody crown", or will he eventually meet his match? Only time will tell. Until then, he will continue his campaign of terror and buy the favor of the dark gods with the blood and souls of mortals."

"May we ever be a thorn in the emperor's side!"

Here is a picture of the first model I painted in the scheme about 5 years ago. Just to give some idea of how they look.

Each is a combination of red black and gold, but they are each slightly different.

And here is the first model I have painted since picking up the Blackthorns again!
The first of a squad of raptors.

I will be posting my paintjobs as I go and I will hopefully see improvement as we go.

I openly welcome constructive criticism of both my painting and my fluff!
I'm eager to get better and will be most appreciative of helpful comments.

Gret stuff, paintjobs are looking very crisp. Also, some very interesting fluff for your army!

Magnificent job pulling the detail out of those minis. Very striking scheme. Old school Chaos colors with modern techniques.

Thanks for the kind words! I know red and gold is overdone with Chaos but trying to mix it up a bit. I've actually finished the whole squad and 2 chosen, I'll upload them when I get a chance.

Here is the raptor squad! Varied enough, I think. For my first unit, I'm pleased. want to get good by the time i get around to my big units and lords etc

Wow, that unit looks amazing together. I love the idea of using thematic colours in different combinations - super individualistic and Chaos-y!

Great fluff too; being dinks for the sake of being dinks sounds like the epitome of life in a Chaos warband.

Looking forward to more!

Hello. These pictures will now bring me up to date including the model I finished last night!

These are in the order I painted them, each slightly better than the last in my opinion!

This was first of the chosen. I was getting a grip of the reds, but I made a mess of the tubing and helmet. I think making the tubing flesh was a mistake and i struggled on it.

This was second. I was much happier with this one, first time dabbling with bone. Quite bright colours.

This is the one i Finished last night. I like this the most. However, I did it a bit differently and it looks overall more blended and darker.

Please let me know which of the two you think is best! The darker more blended one or the brighter!

Hello there.

Just wanted to post my complete squad of chosen. Although, I feel a little better at painting now, I have completed these all using the same techniques.

For the next lot I'm going to start trying new methods of painting.

Please please tell me what you think and what needs changing, I'm keen for constructive criticism

Also, sorry for the quality of the picture, I just cannot take a good photo of these guys.

Thanks man. I'm thinking of doing something big next, maybe a helbrute or oblits or something. Need to figure out painting flesh!

Great stuff, the Reds really pop, but for me I think the highlights on the black are a bit harsh. On the armour that makes sense, but the cloth could maybe do with being duller? Perhaps a wash would do the trick.

Looking at the flesh coloured cables I’d have maybe gone black, but I’m a fan of less is more, especially on such busy models.

I look forward to seeing what you do with the Obliterators or Hellbrute next and how you get on with picking a basing scheme

Thanks for that. I've tried to mute the blacks a little, bit I can see why thick highlights don't make sense on cloth.

--------

So I finished my first ever big model. It took me ages and to be honest, I'm not too happy with it. I haven't figured out how to paint skin and I made a mess of some of the details.
I was quite impatient with this one because of how much more you have to paint. I'm hoping to do the next Obliterator better if I can because I'm quite dissatisfied.

His little cultist friend got a special showing because he got charged by a Stern guard veteran captain with lightning claw in killteam and won. So he earned a lick of paint.

I welcome any advice and feedback, especially on the skin because I really struggle with it, even just the thickness of the paints throw me off.

Thanks xx

I think the skin on the obliterator looks pretty good, nice and tanned. Then again I’m pretty bad at painting skin myself! There was a post in the Painting & Modelling about skin. The more expert painters than I seemed to to for lots of blended layers and mixed in other colours on different parts of the face/body. Darren Lathams video is apparently good too

That red/black scheme pops really nicely, the highlighting is excellent. I dig what I'm seeing here

these look really nice, that red is nice and deep, and stands out well against the other colors you chose. This looks like it will be quite a good looking army!

Thanks for the kind words guys, it's super encouraging. I think that making more black/black trim makes the whole thing darker and makes red pop much more than schemes like world eaters and crimson slaughter. Too much red completely changes the vibe/tone.

I'm worried about getting into my normal CSM eventually, gonna have to paint about 20. I might have to find an easier/faster method or I'll burn myself out. Got other things to do first though, phew

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I posted. I have been grinding out my troops one at a time, and I don't have much time to paint. After many wees, I finally completed 20 Chaos Space Marines!

It took me a while to find a standard of painting that would be fast enough that I didn't burn out painting all of them.
I did not want them to look like complete rubbish either though, so have a look! My 'acceptable' chaos marines, ready to sow carnage!

Hello!

So when asking for feedback from friends, something that came up was that although the paintjobs looked nice, all the armor looked pristine, like it had never been used. This presented me with a new challenge.
I had started painting a chaos lord, but I decided to have my first ever attempt at battle damage and weathering. I'm not too happy with the result, but I learned a lot and will do it better in future.

The main thing though, is I feel like I'm changing and growing as I go, so eyes forward with excitement!

I would love love LOVE any feedback or suggestions with regards to weathering armour etc as this is new territory to me and I'm excited about it.

I’m not the one to ask when it comes to battle damage and weathering, but he’s a tough one to weather I think as he’s so bling with loads of details. Another great addition anyways, keep ‘em comin’

Love the red black and gold, you’ve chosen which panels are red and which are black very carefully and it clearly works wel!

Thanks for noticing!!! There's a delicate balance to be struck, too much red or gold and the entire marine feels much brighter and gives a completely different vibe

I'd say the weathering turned out really well.
At most i'd have given the feet a bit more brown, like the cloak? At most.

To be totally honest I had not noticed a lack of battle damage/weathering until you mentioned it. Maybe because most of your guys already have quite a lot going on between the red, black, gold and bone.

Casting an eye over tings a second time, the only model that I think would really benefit from some weathering is the obliterate and that is probably due to the larger panels. A chip or two and maybe a grimy wash would probably work well there, along with maybe some discolouration of the skin where it meets the armour. I think the mud splash on the Lord’s cloak is a perfect example of the kind of thing you can do to add character and detail without marring (not the right words but it eludes me atm) the paint job underneath - which is usually very impressive.

Basing as well might help tie them into a grimier world. Do you have any plans for that so far? Eg if you go for a muddy look to match the Lords cape, you can then tie that into the lower part of the model w dry brushing etc.

It is great that you can notice your own improvement snd progress - there’s nothing more motivating than that as a painter! The group shot looks great all together.

Keep it up mate you are kicking goals!

Hello, just wanted some quick feedback.

I have painted the first of my (veteran) terminators. I wonder if I have gone too far with the battle damage? I would like some feedback before going on to paint the rest of the squad. I want to set a standard/style before moving on with the rest.

Thanks.

Thanks for that, I had no thought about those, but in fact they would probably benefit from it the most! When I have a chance ill go back to them and do these things.

Thanks for the props bud x

Hey there, just took a gander through your thread and I have to say, as someone who gave the BSF chaos marines a go earlier this year, I commend you on the amount of detail you've picked out as well as the inner "edge highlighting" you've done, all very crisp!

In regards to the battle damage, I think the inner panels have enough, but a few scratches on the edges of the armour wouldn't go amiss, just some metal here and there to show the plate has gone past its primer layer. Although if you left it as is, it still looks great!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try to have single instances of damage cross from the trim onto the plate here and there, but I think ill have to take a scalpel to it and physically cut the damage to make it more convincing.
