Napoleon is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar®-winner Joaquin Phoenix. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte's relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.

20 years ago Ridley Scott tackling this subject would have been a sight to behold. Let's see if he's still got what it takes to pull this off.
Looking at the trailer it certainly seems ambitious, we'll see if Scott can make a coherent story encompassing all the key points in Napoleon's life.
Overall it looks promising, definitely the sort of film I'd like to watch. I'll wait for the reviews to see if I bother going to the cinema for it though.
I don’t know about this Joker. The guy from Bill and Ted will always be Napoleon to me. And Josephine will always be that one actress from the video I had to show bored 9th graders five times in a row.

Robbie Macniven, who most here will know as a former/current(?) Black Library writer and a historical book writer has a pretty fun breakdown from a historical perspective on Twitter, pointing out inaccuracies and creative license.

I'd not get mad at a 2 1/2 - 3 Hour runtime, myself. Given the scope of what they are going for, I'd give it a try.
Though as soon as I finished typing that I'm reminded of 2004's "Alexander"...

Yeah, because Colin Farrell was clearly the first thing wrong with that movie. Had nothing to do with the script, the scope of the story, direction, or the fact that they got Angelina Jolie to play his mom - no no, apparently Colin Farrell is the biggest reason Alexander was awful.
I think this has promise. I’m a lot more interested in this than Gladiator 2!
As to the complaints about the lack of French accents, most period pieces set in France don’t seem to put on French accents (three musketeers, les miserable etc)
Also one of the main complaints about House of Gucci was having the cast put on Italian accents, so it seems Scott has learned from that. (And I don’t remember any complaints about Russel Crowe not putting on a Spanish accent in Gladiator!)
Or just 15000 Red Army (or whoever) reserves to re-do Waterloo, as whilst I liked Sharpe's Boy's Own adventures the budget mean as big battle was as a made puts it "Casualty Riot Syndrome" ie a LARP rumble with maybe 2 dozen folks
"AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED."
for the language, either have them speak the original one, or dub with the local one
because Napoleon never spoke english with fake accent with his soldiers, so just translate it, no problem
what bothers me are some details that are off, which might not be a big problem on their own, but those being in the trailers either mean they were lazy or did not cared
and both would mean bad things for the rest of the movie
So I guess the 1970ies Waterloo will still be the only good movie, and for the expanded story we have the 2002 mini series
Harry, bring this ring to Narnia or the Sith will take the Enterprise

Ugh [shudders]. I still don’t understand how they took the story of one of the most charismatic, successful and intriguing leaders* in history, and made a film that is so…boring.
* note that none of those words are synonymous with “nice”.

The trailer is killin' me. Why does Napoleon look high? That music... I'll just let ya'll see it and report back.

Has Scott ever actually done an 'epic' that hasn't hit the mark? Gladiator was good obviously, and I really enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven (just thought Orlando Bloom was miscast in the lead, but otherwise was excellent).
Robin Hood I wasn't keen on, was definitely missing a certain something, but it also didn't have the grandeur of those other films.
And of course Scott's directorial career started with a portrayal of this era with the Duellists, with Harvey Keitel, remarkable that it has come around full circle for him almost 50 years later.
The Last Duel flopped financially, but I really liked it.

He's got a bunch of films on his resume that aren't good. More recent ones than his earlier work too, which is what makes people wonder about this (and especially Gladiator 2).

Everyone I know that saw it enjoyed it and most critics, that I can recall anyway, were very positive. It just seemed to be a case of coming out at a time when it just wasn't something a lot of people were interested combined with a pretty lackluster marketing campaign.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Yeah, I figured it would take about 47 seconds for the ACKSHUALLY guys to come out of the woodwork for this one.

And it was one of the first post-COVID releases, when a lot of people still couldn’t / wouldn’t go to the big screen.

Scott is (imo) one of those hit and miss directors who is willing to take risks. Sometimes that pays off. Sometimes it doesn't.
I appreciate it.
The trailer though plays out like a bunch of cringey one liners internet tough guys will love about a historical figure internet tough guys love to be in love with. So that was kind of ugh for me.
Looks like the kind of movie that'll at least be interesting though, even if it isn't a home run.
