Yeah, derp on my part. The jet engines would put them after WWII. The point remains though that they are too clean for Ork vehicles. Whichever point in history you put them, these look mass manufactured, not like something an Ork Mek has built from scrap.

That's a problem with battlewagons, IMHO. They all look identical, but very different to anything else. Stompa's chainweapons are like that too- all the same. Doesn't fit the "kustom" idea at all.

I don't think everything the orks use needs to look like it came from a scrap pile. Ork planets have foundries, factories, and economies. They don't make everything they use in a cave with scraps (past a certain point). Aircraft are one of those things that would be mass produced for waaghs (unlike trukks which are usually customized and owned or gargants which are wholly unique creations). Ork aircraft has always been less rickety than their land vehicles.

You would have HATED playing Epic. There was so much uniformity in similar Ork chassis.

I hope chapter house or someone gives as a neat little third party conversion for the Talon. I'm already looking at bit and plane models try to think how it could be improved upon

There are ways around that. Take a look at the Venerable Dreadnought kit. Whole bunches of different panels to customise them so that each one you build (to a point, obviously) can look different.

A more ramshackle starting appearance also makes it easier for modellers to modify the base kit without it looking out of place.

Teh Ork flyers need a more boxy looking front, at least as an option.

Like the Forgeworld Fighta!

To me, I'd say it looks like a metal slug... which is fine for the FW Nurgle Blight Drones, but the Astartes are supposed to have pretty snazzy tech. If I can be even more crass (and I'm loathe to get scatological, but in this case, this "flyer" looks just so terrible that I have to), I would actually say that the Storm Talon looks like the result of a giant Stormraven taking a dump.

However, I am looking forward to some of Dakka's more skilled modellers/converters taking this train wreck and making it look halfway decent. I know we got talent here that can save even this pathetic design. But it's gonna be a tall order - good luck.

All that said, I think the Ork flyer is good, but not really inspired. I'm interested to see precisely how customizable it is though, and if Ork players find the rules to be good or not (and bother to buy them for more than just modelling/painting purposes).

The Necron Scythes look pretty good - spot on for the Codex artwork. I will likely pick one up, since 'Cons are my main army. I'm especially intrigued about the transport version (is that the Night or Doom Scythe? I can't keep GW's avalanche of similar unit names straight ) As other have said, it seems silly to have a "pilot" in an army of robots. I will convert it one of two ways:

-integrate the "pilot" into the machine, removing his legs and most of the arms, having him hard-wired into the avionics etc.

or

-Remove the pilot entirely, cover the cockpit section, and make it look like a "drone," or rather, a self-piloted (not necessarily sentient) robot spaceplane.

The "Summer of (Cool Necron, Not Bad Ork, and Downright awful Space Marine) Flyers" has arrived at last! (Only one year late!)

Ha yesss.. I couldn't put my finger on it but this is exactly it. In that sense I like it.

Might look better pixelated and reduced to 40x40 bitmap. jk

The orc dakka fighter may have its uses depending on how vulnerable flyers are. If I can stay flying high with a good cover save, or range reduction on enemy weapons or something, (how does forgeworld flyers work?) it may be very usable as a de-transporter and doing some damage to preds/long fangs/ect as the horde makes its way across the board.

Probably HS like the DE ones.

I'd much rather FA, as the HS slot for Orks is already crowded with good options, and the FA slot could use an addition.

I rather fancy the Stormtalon, myself (even more so if my beloved werewolf vikings in space can use it). But full disclosure, I think the Stormraven looks nice, too. I like the boxy, stylized, Metal Slug-esque SM vehicle design.

If I could get my hands on two Stormtalons and the FW Storm Eagle in the near future, I'd be happy.

Here some information:
1.) Storm talon is official addition to Codex Space marines only. It is a Fast Attack choice.
2.) All three Ork flyers are also Fast Attack choices.
3.) WD includes a longer narrative on a conflict between White Scars, Orks and Necrons, all featuring a flyer. Think of it as a battle report with background and lists but no details on the actual game.
4.) It includes a nice new scenario called "alarm start" where the defender has 3 flyers/heavy skimmers on the ground and the attacker starts from reserve. Attacker has to destroy flyers on the ground, defender has to get them off the ground. VP for each destroyed unit, 2VP for each destroyed defender flyer, defender gets d3+1 VP for each of his flyers still fully functional at the end of the game. No mentioning of 6th edition or flyer rules in there. Next WD will feature an attack on some airfield, featuring White Scars again.
5.) There will be a direct only BL rerelease of the Graphic Novel Deff Skwadron:
http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/Deff-Skwadron.html
6.) Burna-Bommer has two fire bombs and can buy up to 6 fire rockets for 10p each.

That's fine to a certain extent... but how long would they stay looking pristine and factory-new?

Battle damage would be repaired with whatever is to hand, and no self-respecting Big Mek is going to be able to resist adding his own 'improvements' to his Waaagh!'s air support.
