Lol yeah, those are the two Chaos chapters I like most. I just can't decide on a dex. Sure, GK's are wonderful, and I also have SW which I love, but I'm kinda worried about running so many marine armies. Chaos is just this sultry vixen that's always catching my eye lol, specifically nurgle. But my friend who runs chaos says that since the chapters were condencd down to one dex, they are all basically the same. And unfortunatly, no real help via the blog posts. Any suggestions on a fun dex? Or hell, maybe even the standard vanilla marine dex, but I've NEVER look it over in depth, only at the pics haha.

I dont agree with the opinion that all the Chaos Chapters are the same. All the Cult Space Marines are considered troop choices now though, that does not mean that you need to use all of them, or even any. I myself have a Death Guard company that I run with either Plague Marines or Chaos Marines with the Mark of Nurgle.
What is true is that their selection of troops and wargear seems to be a lot more limited because their codex was one of the first new ones out there. The troop selection is even more limited if adhering to a single cult, and some are obviously better than others.
Personally I am quite happy with my Chaos force as they are. Of course that doesn't stop me from wanting more....

Now, once again, haven't seen the dex, but THIS is the kind of stuff I love to see.

So, in your opinion, what do you think would go best with the chapter? Chaos, a specific Chaos Legion, Vanilla Marines, or would you suggest some OTHER Chapter to run counts as?

The things that I'm trying to take into consideration:

Basic troops will be pretty much bland looking, they're not about flash and pizzaz.
Elites and specials are where they'll be running stuff nobodies EVER seen before.
I plan to have at LEAST a 1500 pt army at first
I want the dex they follow to fit with them - they're not super elites like GK's, they're not rabid (I say this lovingly) like SW.
I want to be able to change things up and run a LOT of different combinations.
THIS ARMY IS NOT FOR TOURNAMENT WINNING YET. IT IS SIMPLY FOR FUN.

Repeat. FUN. I want to enjoy playing these guys. Save the competition for my GK's for now haha... ]=)

And my problem is that I just have limited access to knowing what they special rules for each dex are, and really how much fun each army is to play. If you or anyone else has any helpful feedback/input, please do!

Alright quick rundown of the Codex out there at the moment (well from my point of view, and I dont have a complete knowledge of them in the least).

- Space Marines -
The All Round Codex, it has the most options due to it being a general collection for most Chapters out there. There are a collection of Special Characters in here to change the game up somewhat (White Scars - But an all Biker army is not what I think you had in mind by a longshot).

- Blood Angels -
I have to admit I am not too familiar with these guys. As far as I know they are pretty Close Combatty...Death Company and everything.

- Space Wolves -
A group of grumpy, stubborn Space Marines with a lot of customization options withing each unit. Personally I do like the Space Vikings, but as you stated they dont seem to mesh with your playstyle or choice of backstory.

- Dark Angels -
Well I am biased here.....all Terminator Armies, hell yes! The option to go for a faster Ravenwing...more hell yes!

- Grey Knights -
Extremely advanced technology wise, Dreadknights, a lot of Terminators, Teleporting Marines....I think these guys should be seriously considered. Of course if you already have a Grey Knight army you might want to go in a diffirent direction in order to make a clear distinction between your armies. Or merely pick troops you would not for your regular army.

- Chaos Space Marines -
A lot of specialist troops in the different cults. Slaanesh has a higher Initiative than most and some really odd weapons in the Sonic department. Khorne are close combat monsters, but their feral side might not be your thing. Here come the two interesting ones. Nurgle has a increased toughness as well as the Feel no Pain special rule which works well for your army of cybernetic clones. My personal favourites for the Iron Mongers are the Thousand Sons. Their downside is that there always needs to be a Sorcerer in each of their units. Their upside is that they get an Invulnerable Save as well as Boltters that are AP3 as opposed to the regular AP5. Of course if you did pick Chaos it also means your Dreadnoughts go insane and can fire on your own units, but it does give you access to a Defiler....which is conversion heaven.

- Others -
I am not sure if you have access to the Imperial Armour books but there are some listing in there as well, I personally have not read them all (or very much). I am sure I saw a sort of Space Marine / Imperial Guard hybrid list for the Badab forces. Of course you could go for a very strange alliance of armies and pick a Thousand Son / Grey Knight hybrid (HERESY!) but it is your own Chapter so who cares, its about the game and your enjoyment especially if you want to make a fun army.

I like the idea of Nurgle. It's always been my favorite sounding of all the chaos factions.

OH, and I've been looking into my termies. Thinking of using this guys suggestion for making them.

Standard Assault termi box, but you cut the shields in half to form the shoulders. Not bad. Also, just props to this cause it's a SEXY mini.

OH, and I've been thinking about bases. So far, I'm thinking either a desert theme base, an urban theme, a techno-style base, or making some custom 'circuit' bases kinda like this:

The final base would probably be dank, dirtier, partially covered and the lighting would be an inconsistent bright green, thinking of tying it in to the eye color green. Thoughts?

Also keep in mind another big negative side (which I just realized) Chaos does not use Space Marine Scouts, Apothecaries or Tech Marines....if anything could get you to go convert crazy its those Servitors.

As for your bases, I am actually considering the top ones for my Helghast themed Imperial Guard, who are dark, World War II colors mixed with World War I trench warfare theme. The amount of money required to get all of those though is quite a heap... I did think of a way to use those Plague Marine heads as Snipers like I planned, figure I can use them on models to function either as Ratling Snipers or Scout Marines.

Look I found a nice Iron Mongeresque face for a Dreadnought, the one on the bottom left... (From the Defiler head, it comes with three faces to pick)

I'll have to look into how important having tech marines, apothecaries, and scouts are to me.

Hence I said go two armies, use them as Allies. Or just be a sneaky git and pick the army list depending on what you want to field. Allowing you to switch it around.

UPDATE - Well, the Chaos Nurgle Champ Heads came in. Here are a few pics of one that's been de-nurgl-a-fied by itself, then on some MK III sweetness.

ALSO, here are the first partial attempt at the ever-so-eloquently dubbed 'TRON' bases. Thanks Haonn.

What I did to make them was whip up some greenstuff, roll a chunk into as perfect a sphere as i could, place it on a wet, flat surface, then press a standard base against it until it flattened out evenly and only just barely came over the edges of the base. Then, I took paperclips, strightened them, then used pliers to make sharp, clean bends in them. Then, wetted the top of the base and the paper clips, then carefully applied even pressure on the paper clips to force groves into the greenstuff.

Problems:

1) The ridges are too deep, and they are too rounded. Want them to be as square as possible - IE perfectly squared haha
2) It's difficult to see what they are supposed to be. Will hopefully be better once I work out the kinks
3) They're just a trial attempt, and there will be more added on top of them.

The idea is that this is the surface of Tagrantis IV, but there's going to be wear and tear, evidence of decades of neglect and inactivity. I'm thinking it will look closest to a neglected neon sign, the kind where it's rusted, and worn, but still has a character all its own.

And the last couple pics are of the initial test marine posted before - wanted to post another pic of it in the lamplight to let you see the scheme a little better. I think it looks good, but just not sure how to had the details to it - and of the tentative theme pic for the bases posted earlier. I've enlarged it and placed both the bases and the marine on it to give you the visual of what the end result should look like if the bases come out right.

And as usual, hit me up with your thoughts. Thanks!

I love the heads, but if you are going to use them you need to replace the horn with something not just hack it off. In your painted model from before the guy put a scope on it. You need to do something like that. As for your paint scheme, your test model looks a bit to statuesque, you should drop in a bit more color either through a wash or some good layering. Of the two CG images I would go with the one on the right, lol.

Agreed on the horn. Initial plan is to take tubing, and pipe it either into the backpack or into the weapons (umbra ferrox pattern w/ scope) so that it looks like they're three eyes serve as part of a targeting system for the shooting. And a couple will have other stuff, one will have a radar like mini dish. Etc.

And the originally painted test mini was just intended as the base coat, nothing more. There will be PLENTY of details added later.

Flexible Greenstuff power cables using the tool I listed earlier in the blog. Will most likely be made from milliput or greenstuff.

I would be interested to hear how well those tools work, I have been eyeing up a set for while now and the video on the site makes it all look so easy. but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. and they are quite expensive unless you really make use of them

Agreed on all of it. The thing is, it's just like any other tool you have; takes time to perfect the technique, and even longer to figure out the 100 and 1 ways to use it. I've seen some stuff that people have made using the tool that just blows my mind.

But for me, it's a definite purchase. This army will need TONS of tubes, and then it will just come in handy when I decide to make any other army or special characters or whatever.

Yeah, I've seen them and I will purchase them once I get back on the bus with my SW, but until then not that interested lol.

YES! All my marines are now in hand. However, I am a bit disappointed.

They were bought from two different sellers, and there's a WORLD of difference between the two.

2nd seller has PERFECT QUALITY miniatures from Forgeworld. That has now shown me that the 1st seller SOLD ME MALFORMED CRAP BY COMPARISON.

I am currently debating reporting the seller to ebay or Forgeworld directly, as after comparison the first batch look to be made of a differently hued resin, and quite possibly recastings...

....muther .....

BUT other than that, things are GREAT!

To Date, the following have arrived:

20 x MK III Marines
15 x MK IV Marines
10 x Phobos Pattern Bolter
10 x Umbra Pattern Bolter
10 x Umbra 'Ferrox' Pattern Bolter
30 x MaxMini Steam Knight Heads
10 x Nurgle Champion Heads

Still waiting on...

2 x LR Achilles Upgrades
10 x Umbra Pattern Bolter
10 x Umbra 'Ferrox' Pattern Bolter

HA, and to think I didn't know what to do this weekend... =)

I WILL get pictures up here in a little bit after I get things sorted and finish a little car maintenance (changing oil FTW).

Well, the the tron like bases, what you could do is just make bases with a piece of plasticard/ equivalent, just cutting out the lines, then gluing the pieces to the base, casting that. And that's a shame about the different batches, but eBay's always a shot in the dark sort of place.

Yeah, I'd thought about that same solution to the base problem. Gonna pick some up from a friend in a couple weeks when we meet up for some epic GK vs. White Scar action.

And Even though the ebay thing REALLY me off to no end, after some reflection, it's probably for the best. Now that I know I have units that have imperfections, they're going to be the ones that I attempt new techniques on - the cutting/greenstuffing arms into new positions, battle damaging, etc - that and I'm also planning on cutting some arms/legs up and sticking tubes and various metalic pieces coming out to simulate blown off/cut off limbs.

OH YEAH, speaking of limbs, bought 4 of these online today - GREAT DEAL from the same seller as the good batch of marines.

I know, I know, I keep on buyin when I'm tryin not to, but come on: THESE TOTALLY FIT THE THEME. And I really want that tube making kit too haha. Just need to find someone who can read German to help me place the order.

So, here's the plan for the weekend:

1) Sort out the new models - DONE
2) Clean up my work area and get things organized by army - IN PROGRESS
3) Add stuff to/cleanup my Trade Thread
4) Get Iron Monger's Bits Cleaned
5) PLAY SOME DAMN VIDEO GAMES - I need to make myself take a break before it's too late. Anyone play TF2 or BBC2 for PC? Black Ops or Reach for 360?

So that's about it for now. Was a long, uneventful, but highly rewarding day.

Sucks to hear about the bad deal on your first e-bay purchases, you think it might be recasts, I would definitely report it myself, sounds very dodgy. I was looking at some stuff on e-bay too and I think it was possibly the same person, think I might pass on it now, just in case.

Yeah, I'd never heard anything bad about the seller, which is why I'm so upset. And, stupidly, I got the bits, gave them a quick once over in the bag, and then posted comments. But What's done is done.

Yeah, if you want to PM me the name (as I don't want to slander them publicly, I don't find that to be alright) of your bad reaction, I'll let you know mine and we'll see if they're the same person.

Well, forgot to wash the flash off the bits, so they're soaking right now.

And since I had nothing else to do, I attempted battle damage on my test model. What do you think?

I am loving the beat up grimy look, you get the feeling they have been fighting hard and for a long time

don't forget to get some PC/360 games played too, although if you play some Dawn Of War that can be considered research

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the damage. I think it's a good idea, but I'm still in need of practice.

About your bases, have you seen what the Warmill have been doing? They have several project logs on here, and I'm not sure but seems like might be just what your looking for. Not a clue as to expense or anything but thought they might be able to help you?

Think really really hard and you may just find me.

Looking good. Really digging the Tron look bases. Can't wait to see your new tanks and such.

If you ever looking to play some TF2 on Steam its R3ACTION, i think.
Or Xbox 360 its AfroMastah14 for some Black Ops or Reach. Whichever, i suck at both.

Lol well TF2 is upsetting me right now.... but some black ops or reach tomorrow would be excellent!

I love battle damage but imho it may be a little too much. Maybe it's just me, and maybe its because I suck at battle bamage
