Ooh, I really like those vibrant colors on that diorama base! One criticism I might have is that the base is brighter than the model, so the model (the center of attention) is kind of disappearing. Maybe some bright highlights on the red, like you have on the base, could help bring the model into focus.

Agreed. Also, I would have probably chosen something like green for the osl rather than purple, as this would contrast nicely with the red.
For the osl, some things worth reading up on are the inverse square law of light, which concerns light intensity at differing distances from the source, and also the fact that light can't make a surface darker. So for example here, you have a white horn, with darker purple on it, and it doesn't look realistic because of that. Look at the purple on the dark metal area, and you can see this works much better because of the dark surface.
Personally if I'm doing osl I like to make the surface as dark as possible so the osl is lighting that dark area and these issues are easier to avoid

Cheers guys... yeah osl is a new thing for me still experimenting so pointers useful... that bit about the horn Queen Annes Revenge, seems to make perfect sense when you say it like that ;-) ....
I've had a bit more of a play with it hopefully get another photo tomorrow when lights better.... as suggested tried to bring up the Red of the squig a step or two just to keep the focus a bit more.. as well as slightly toning down the purple light on the cheek, its at the edge of the light radius so probably shouldn't be as bright as that... and the horn!... again toning down the purple cast on it, and as you recommended darked down the tone of the overall horn, so it makes a bit more sense it glowing up like that...
think its a 50/50 chance between having improved it or wrecked it ;-) but its onlt paint, can always add more....

Exactly. Osl is a very tricky thing to master. I started off small, with some red light from flames cast on cloaks etc. I found that treating it like a highlight helped. So mix your illumination colour into your base tone and apply a couple of coats, then start applying thinned coats of the desired osl colour, using the inverse square law to determine how intense the reflection should be on each area.

Blocked in (most of) the main colours for the Matilda Tank. It's still got some filters and a lot of weathering to do before completion, and of course the tank commander, and then I can make a start on the diorama base. So I'd say I'm halfway there. I'd love to say this was a total breeze, but masking off the turret for the splinter 'Caunter' camouflage was a FAFF. Never again... (He says, eyeing up a Crusader tank ).

Ooh. Undead space ghost (coast to coast?). Stylish
After faffing for the last few days with resin and fake sunlight to make a spider tank, back to the task at hand.
Done the engines now. Still some markings needed and some metallics that I’ll do by hand, but I gave highlighting and sharing with the airbrush another go. They look more interesting than flat grey, and I’ll leave them at that, but I definitely need steady hand practice!
To be viewed at a distance only methinks

Quick WIP.
Still one more major coat (the reds get a layer of Nulan Oil), a lot of touchup and a few details (eyes, teeth). Plus all the baseing.
But 4 paints on him now. Contrast and Nids go so very well together for a quick tabletop army.

Anyone have any tips for working with Vallejo's chipping medium? Trying to apply it and the subsequent paint layer with a brush since I don't have an airbrush and I'm getting mixed results.

I'm going with a Stormcast riding some sort of gryph creature (no idea on the actual name for this model) this month, here's the proof pic
and after a lot of procrastination, I've finally got the base coats and washes done
Maybe too much procrastination as there is still an awful lot to do...

Those cat-girls are totally off on a joy ride love the posing one.
I’m going to call this done now. I was going to put some weathering around the place, but I tested something in an unobtrusive place and then did some leading edge weathering and I couldn’t quite get anything satisfying, so I’ll stop there
Please ignore the Van Saar dudes in the first image as far as voting is concerned as they are just for scaling purposes.
Now to batter some varnish on there and stick it in the cabinet for possible future use in Stargrave, 5Parsecs and operation last train

Nice work on the flyer, Flinty. I like the effects you got with the stencils.
I'm pretty much done with the mech:
I'm not totally sold on the gun barrels, but I'm getting tired of working on this model, so I'll set it aside for a few days and work on something else for a while.

Thanks Josh. That is a lovely mech. The weathering looks great. Regarding the guns, the ones on the left of the picture look great, but from that point of view the NMM on the right hand barrels is at the wrong angle. I’m no expert but I think For that kind of Cylinder you will Need to choose a Viewing angle and run the reflections to
That point.

Done. I’ve said it before, but I really love the contrast paints on nids. This was just about 1 week from prime to done, and that’s with me unboxing stuff and breaking myself moving. While I normally aim for a 1-a-week goal, something of this magnitude would normally take the greater part of a month. Not going to win any awards, but solid work to get the swarm onto the table in no time flat. Takes me longer to clean them up and assemble then it does to paint.
With the wings and everything sticking out, getting a brush places while using the magnifier was less than fun. Very 3-D model. Lucky I didn’t knock over any pots of paint. Every time I flipped it about to check an angle, it bonked something.

I am in a bit of a pickle, based on my progress so far I am shifting to completing one Shining Spear for the end of the month. If I can progress one to completion then I will try for another an so on.
