Looks pretty rad J-Paint. The cloak looks REALLY good and smooth.

Though for some reason I think I'm less enthusiastic about the hood. I just feel like maybe there should be a bit more space around the head, and not fit so tightly. But that's a personal preference.

@Baiyuan - I love it!

@lipsdapips - Aren't they just awesome, I for one am really quite impressed, (less so with the price, but hey!)

@Gits - Ah they are actually really easy, just copper wire inside the plastic casing of a paperclip with a bit of green stuff on the edges.

@rustproof - Lol thanks rust!

@San - I think I may have gone overboard on the purple, its less of a spot colour, more of a major percentage of the model!

@comrade - Thanks comrade, the sepia idea was indeed vair useful.

@Sageheart -

@Archmagos- Amadeus - Thanks man, I know what you mean about the hood, do you prefer this bare head??

So then guys here is my Black Templar that I painted up for Nerdfest's painting competition on faces, I am reasonably pleased, the zenithal black is nowhere near as good as I would like, but It will do! The transfer going down the side of the cape is also a bit rough, will have to buy some microsol on San's advice. Overall though it looks as grim and gothic-y as I was intending, the cherub with the sore looking chest implants and the sepia white skulls were my personal favourites!

Which head do you guys prefer?

Or with this head:

Ignore the bit of fluff on the hood, damn stuff!!!

Agree both look really good. I would go with the bear one though, as there is more face for the face competition. Great looking templar all around. Script on the cherub's scroll is done very well.

mate, you've outdone yourself!

i think the zenithal looks just right - enough to add depth without it dominating the model. great work on the faces - youve got to send me the recipe you are using.

as for the purple...whats not to love? personally i think i prefer the head without the cowl...

the golds look great as well man, as does the cloak. if i was to suggest anything...maybe a line of trim on the cloak? but really..this may be your best model yet....i love it!

Going to vote bald. The hood just doesn't do it for me.

Count me out of nerdfests comp haha, that model is amazing! I personally feel that the robed head fits the theme of the model more appropriately, but at the end of the day it's up to you man!

Wow! Haven't dropped by in a while but what a treat! Loved the tutorial on bed rolls/tarps. The minotaurs were great fun. I liked the alpha legion dude but I agree ( with whoever it was) the helmet should be white or something for a bit more contrast. The Black Templar is really nice but I would go bald with the head. The purple works well as the spot colour. I am also loving the crests on the guard, where did you get them from?
Keep up the good work, all really cool!

Great job mate lovely shading worked really well, I like the fact you have bright colours yet keep an earthy tone at the same time

The bald head works best for me, the clothed hood looks a little heavy IMHO, maybe less is more in this case but overall great job.

Amazing model either way, I prefer the bare head but both are spectacularly well done. Certainly use whichever head you don't pick on another model, it's too good to waste.

Love the bare head, although the cowled head is also great

@Gits - Gits, you are far too kind, I think the next thing I do you should go out of your way to find a minor flaw, really nitpick!

@Valhalla - Bare

@Moltar - Agreed, probably better for competition's sake! and thanks, its because it was a bigger surface than purity seals, you can actually get some letter definition in!

@Livanbard - Yup, agreed, might have worked if it had been different colours, but as it is its too much beige!

@Baiyuan - Baldy it is!

@San - The recipe is actually no different from when I made one for my valhallans however many pages ago, (I will find the link for you!) I'm glad you commented on the gold actually, normally I just wash it down and leave it, but this time I went ahead and did all the fiddly steps like highlight up to bright silver and glaze with different colours to give depth, a trim on the cloak is a good idea, I will have a think, see If I have the patience! Edit: The face tutorial was on page 14 San: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/390/417230.page

@Comrade - Not a big hood person? I and everyone else seems to agree.

@Lipsdapips - Nah its really not that good, most of it is the moody lighting And ooh, a vote for the hood, you are shaking things up!

@Reaper - Long time no see Reaper!! good to see you again! Thanks for the comments, I was thinking maybe taking the alpha legion advice and doing a bone coloured helmet if I do another? The crests are actually plasticard and GS, well, the first one was, then I made a mould and cast them, even so they are a nightmare to attach properly!

@LDD - Agreed, I think I rolled it out too thick for the hood, as you say, too heavy.

@Paradigm - Ah you say that, but now that it has been rejected it may just sit, bluetac-ed to my painting light for a few months!

@Ruglud - Pah I really don't even compare to those guys, I honestly don't know how they do some of the stuff they do, NMM for starters!

@Iron-encore - menacing does sound like something a BT would be...

@GiraffeX - Another bald vote, good, that is decided then!

So wow! thanks for all the comments guys! And the Bald head has won by an absolute avalanche! Except for the few quiet dissenting voices in the background (lipsdapips!) So I have now stuck down the bald head.

So having done this Black Templar I was feeling a bit nostalgic, so I had a root around through my old collection of models from before I posted on Dakka, and I thought if you wouldn't mind that I would share a few of the more interesting bits! The only ones I will actually put on the Dakka gallery are these salamanders, the rest are nothing special really!

So here we have some salamanders I did just before I joined Dakka, they were an attempt to be as absolutely well painted as I could manage at the time, and looking back the freehand on the shoulders is probably better than I could do now! The only thing I dont like about them is the overly bright green and the cartoon style paint chipping, but anywho:

So then I delved even further into the box and found my old black templars:
Spoiler:

With my marshal, Gustav Swift (Who I think was the guy who invented the refrigerated train cart....uninspired inspiration I know!)

Then finally and at the bottom of the box I found my skaven!

Spoiler:

To give you a scale for this screaming bell, on the left is the new BT!)

Minor Flaw: They're Salamanders. Not that they aren't BLOODY FANTASTIC Salamanders but if you'd just changed the design on the shoulder pad, they could have been Mantis Warriors... which would have been *much* better!

@nerd - Thanks Nerd, yeah sometimes its nice to to look back and think, yeah I have improved! The issue there is you then want to go back and repaint everything all over again!

@Gits - That's more like it Gits...well, almost! I was actually thinking about making a mantis warrior at some point, I never realised they had such cool background!

@LDD - I really have not! These were a few select bits of the very best stuff I did before I came on dakka, just for you I will dig out one of my less impressive attempts, if they were a wine, well...a better description would be vinegar they are so bad! Not that I have anything against vinegar!

@Panda - Thanks, always cool to reflect sometimes.

So about to start my PhD on the 1st so am cramming in a last little bit of painting before all my free time evaporates, just a few more dolosians for you:

My Sniper finished:

And also the sentinel from ages ago! I covered it in stowage to make it look more like a scout, am fairly pleased, what do you all think?

And I left the weapons off so I can change them if it turns out plasma cannons on sentinels are rubbish, (I personally just like the look the most!) I only painted the flamer as an alternative so far, might do the auto cannon too.

Fantastic and gorgeous work J. Particularly liking your choice of yellow and black poewr cables (of which i share a similar love), and the weathering on the rusted metals and debris on the ground. In particular the scratched and worn markings. Nice use of kit bits too! Thanks for sharing

I like it. Yes, sir. I do.

I also like the yellow and black power cables. I'm gonna have to learn to paint those one of these days.

Nice pic dump, J. Hopefully you'll be able to eek in a tiny bit of painting time down the road. Good luck on your PhD!
Sentinel looks great. Stowage really adds some personality and definitely helps the scout theme. Sniper looks good and I like the effect you used on his cloak, but I'm not crazy about the way his backpack is just stuck on. No worries though. Better to have him painted before the hiatus.

Mate, these look amazing. Love the sentinel, especially the Weathering on the markings and all the little details.

Honestly , you've got a great style that is really distinctive and original. It's inspiring me to try and create a home brew force!

Indeed they do, and they need a more accomplished champion than yours truly...

Wonderful work on the sentinel BTW. Love the plasma core and the lense... they really provide excellent focal points for the piece.

Nice work again love the sword and dagger wielding maniac Close combat awesomeness

Like the sniper is there some kind of pattern on the cloak, cant really tell that well on the pics but looks great

Sentinel looks combat ready stomping through wreckage searching out the cells of chaos, the load out is a realistic touch gives it a nice self efficient look.
