Well glad I misread and it is continuing! Lovely freehand, I still seem miles away from doing it properly so I'm very tempted to go down the printed decal route don't know how you chaps do it.

The funny part is that the LSD on the left was purely accidental. Once I'd realized what I'd done, I decided to make hay on the right hand side. I need to go in and fancy up those first letters a bit. They're a bit stark.

I'm not really big on free-hand either... but occasionally it's the only thing to do.

Gits, you're a genius.

Really, though, it looks great. I love the details you added to the doors. (Knightley might get jealous of all those squiggles, though. ). Are the MW badges decals or free-hand?

By the way, even more so than your Rhino, this technique...

 Gitsplitta wrote:

Washing vehicles is tricky... you can't do it like you would a regular figure, the big flat plates just mess up how the wash works. I've tried spraying washes on before but this doesn't always work well because the wash tends to clog the nozzle and you've got to really hose it down to get it to pool in the cracks and crivices. So, what I did was to take something that was clear that I knew would flow properly (in this case, Vallejo "Satin" laquer) and add sepia to it to give it color. I then sprayed the model. I did NOT hose it down. This mellowed the colors and gave them a very natural hue. It warmed the sides considerably and toned down the yellow highlights. Resulting (I think) in a very subtle but very natural looking vehicle.

...is Real Genius!

I just tried it on a couple of bikes, and they turned out great! Came out the same color as my other bikes, but without any pooling or splotching, and they took me like 10 seconds to do. It took me longer to clean my airbrush than it did to paint the models.

Thanks for the great ideas and techniques!

Ahh, I see that I was seeing something that I wasn't seeing. Your hatch is working as normal. I shall however keep that idea for a future rhino.

Good squiggles. Should do the interior in wild psychedelic colours...

Well, I did paint the interior to a degree... I painted everything I could reach the same color as the inside of the doors (the bone color). No details though. If I build another one from scratch I might consider it. The platform that the marine stands on is foam covered by diamond plate plasticard, painted of course.

Yellowbeard wrote:Gits, you're a genius.

Of course I had to quote that... might even sig it. LOL!

Thanks for the great ideas and techniques! YB

That's the only way I know the vast majority of my current bag of tricks... other people sharing what they've learned. You'll have a chance to do the same as your painting advances and people with less skill are looking for help and advice.

Dr H wrote:Ahh, I see that I was seeing something that I wasn't seeing. Your hatch is working as normal. I shall however keep that idea for a future rhino.

Actually, shame on me for not responding last time... I wanted to. Sliding doors is a *great* idea! You could run the tracks out to the far edges of the hull and have them work that way. You should try it and see how it works, then let the rest of us know!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!

Side doors need to be repainted, but having them open is probably a bit much.

Well, I mentioned earlier that my razorback turrets had taken a tumble. As a way of rewarding myself for getting the first of YB's Razorback's done, I've been working on a bit of my stuff, including fixing and updating the old razorback turrets.

Here's the end result. Ye olde 397, re-painted with extra details, some lining, edge highlighting and two coats of gloss followed by layer of flat. That should slow the chipping down a bit.

By comparison, here's where I was at the beginning of the rhino/razorback re-vamp. Any difference in the greens is purely an artifact of photogrophy or an illusion due to the added detail (edging and lining most likely). The difference in the yellows however is very real.

OH, and I figured out how to magnetize the open hatch doors which holds them in place securely but allows me to pop them off easily.

@graven: Thanks! I thought it would be useful to show the two. If you do a good basic job on a vehicle, there's no reason you can't come back later when you have more time or skill and spruce it up. I think two years passed between when I first painted the rhinos/razorbacks and the recent upgrades.

@Hruotland: Thank you sir, and thanks for commenting! Hope you stop by again from time to time & see what's up!

Started working on the second Fire Hawk razorback. All of the fiddling with my old razorbacks is really just my way of procrastinating. All the metal bits that need to be done aren't the most exciting thing to do.

I also must admit to being inordinately proud of the magnetizing job I did on the open hatch. I think I picked it up about 5 different times yesterday, just so I could snap the doors into place, then take them off, snap, unsnap.... It's just so fun!

On the Friday night of Adepticon at approximately 7 PM (or as soon as we can find a free table in the main hall), the Wardens of the Maelstrom and the Redeemers of the Maelstrom will revive the epic stuggle of the Badab war. 8000 points (or two full Adepticon teams), 4 rebels, 4 loyalists will vie for superiority on a desolate battlefield in that far-flung region of space. The Fire Hawks, Red Scorpions, Marines Errant and their Adeptus Mechanicus allies will try to bring the four rebel chapters... Tiger Claws, Lamenters, Executioners and the Mantis Warriors to heal.

We invite all of you to come join us to witness this historic event, and well as joining us in a mixer of sorts. A chance to meet us, see the armies in person & maybe even run one of these storied chapters whilst it's owner takes a pee break! We'll provide some limited quantity of libation and nosh to get things rolling... but it's probably best if you bring your own lest you be disappointed. We'll start to set up 7ish... but if you want to wait until the battle is rolling to swing by, 8 PM is probably a more reasonable time to join us.

Dakkanoughts on our two teams are...

Myself (Gitsplitta)
Solar_lion
Briancj
whalemusic360
Ramos Asura
Yellowbeard
IceAngel
inmygravenimage's... well... graven image!

I hope you can join us... it's going to be a really good time!

Feel free to cross-post this as you like. This is an open invitation to Dakka and the 40k community at large. I'll post it in a couple of different places on Dakka myself.

See you there!

Finished the Fire Hawk Rhinos/Razorbacks this morning. The one rhino still needs guns but I think I'll send them to YB and let him decide how he wants to mount them (the other was built from scratch so I could model the various hatches separately... the gun-less one was a re-paint so I didn't have that option.
