I go option number 2, to distinguish the sargeant you could use a cingulum (the leather strappy loincloth) and give the scrubs a regular loin cloth.

I agree.

I like option 3 best, followed by 2. I do like the chunkyness of it, although I am aware that others dislike it for this reason.

Looks like most folks like option #2... and dantay's suggestion is just a perfect fit. Unfortunately the only leather strap loin cloths I have are attached to some Forge World bodies that I was very lucky to get... so I don't want to detach those. I'll poke around on e-bay and see if I can find something.

I've got him based and will add a pic later of the final build (sans loin cloth)... then it's off to build the other five. (Lord help me...)

I'm not sure that'll do it. Being swept to the side the way it is I don't think will work with the figure. Need something that hangs pretty straight down & isn't too wide.

I know what I want to do with them now... unfortunately if I have to order the bits (probably from 3rd party companies in Europe)... it'll delay the project by several weeks.

Centurion loin cloth / tassets looks better to me.

After careful consideration... I've decided I can probably scratch-build everything I need.

Finished. Took all day, but I won't have to do all this scratch building again (and I didn't have to wait weeks for bits to come in). The sloppy wash is just so that the white plasticard doesn't overwhelm the camera.

You guys remember that guardsman "The Winter Soldier" that I did for bebopdrum's competition. Well, I got my prize a while back, thought I'd show it off. It's very nice of him to pass out prizes... I never expect from a dakka-based competition (it's the joy of creating and competing that I'm into). Got some really cool heads from BRG minis. (wow... must be nice to have prize support!) The heads are great and all over the board. I have a bunch of ape-based heads that just look like their begging to be converted onto an IG body to act as Jakero proxies for either an inquisitional squad or the Brotherhood of the Black Hand (GK). Thanks bebop & BRG!!



(Any mini company that wants to offer a little prize support for my next comp is more than welcome. I'll give you good pub!)


NOW... I can get on with building the rest... they should go together much quicker.

Wowed. The sashimono absolutely make it. Glorious work.

Nice work Gits'. Gone a long way to making that model better than the originals.

Fixed the head so it's looking in the same direction the arm is pointing. My one gripe about this model (aside from all the stupid stuff I didn't use) is that the arms are in no way poseable (sp?).

Looks great, liking the tasselly bits.

And if you got a load of bits you don't need, then you have lots of bits for other conversion work, where's the down side?

My favourites are IG heavy guys, loads of weapons you can convert you dont need. How much are these big fella's over there anyways, they are like £10 each here, which is way too much.....sorry not going there. I kinda like them now I have seen your guy.

I shan't go into the long list of gripes I have with the stock models. Needless to say, I'll make my own version one day.

What you have done though, have all been improvements.

They're crazy expensive... the only reason I got the two boxes I did was that I was able to parley tournament prizes (gift cards) and store discounts into something that I could afford. They're over $25 each here in The States. I never would have paid full price for them. It's insane... don't care how good they are.

£47.50 full price for a box of 3 here, stupidly expensive.
They arent nice to look at stock, but not totally irredeemable.

You Mantis Centurions do look great though!

The back banners ar really cool, they help with the mantis winged effect.

They won't all have back banners, that's just for the sergeants (and it's too much darn work), but yes, that's the effect I was going for.

Better head placement. You get bored.. a single back banner ?

Now that I'm most of the way through build #2... I'm going to say something I NEVER thought I'd say... I LOVE THESE MODELS!

They're massive... and intimidating... and if you leave off all of the assenine "marine in a marine" crapola, they look fantastic. I still wouldn't pay over $25 each for them... but they are really terriffic to work with. Even though you can't really pose them at all (which I don't like), all the pieces are keyed in so they're very easy to assemble correctly. Also... the mantis heads look fantastic on this frame where they'd be too large to really work with anything else.

#2 is built with the exception of the weapons systems that need to be magnetized. That's not going to be easy. We'll see what kind of progress I can make tonight.

@SL: A single sashimono is a possibility... but it's still an entire night to build two of them. I'll give it some thought though. I do like the look very much, fits the aesthetic perfectly.

Looking at it - I think you should try putting the lower leg armour on.

It protects the ankle and knee joints, which at the moment look too fragile and exposed.

I do like the custom leather loincloth, it defiantly set sit off nicely.

Amazing work Gits, the sashimono/banner type things really add some height to him which is awesome.
