Very cool, the OSL looks effective too, and has given me an idea of how to approach the technique! Thanks for that!

Dang, tough crowd, has my painting gotten that bad/unintersting? lol. That's ok I need the challenge to do better! i suppose i need to do more modelling than painting to get more feedback here, so hopefully soon ill begin work on the beasts and ive some fun ideas for any who,
:Thanks kitch, it's a speedy version of osl meant for troop painting. It's somewhat effective and gets the point across without being too time consuming. Everything is time consuming for me lol.
As for today's pics, the dark lancer is finished. I added more blue, gems, and few spots of bronze to balance the colors better. I'm now more pleased with the overall composition

Great to see you back in action, Bebop!
I must guiltily admit that I have only been lurking since your return Mostly due to my lack of knowledge/opinions (and interest, to some extent) of Dark Eldar, but I've had the above sentiments too many times to ignore a fellow dakkanaught in distress
My thoughts:
Great job on the black armor. It's tough to make plain, black armor not be boring looking.
Love the OSL. True, it's not so intensive, but the effect of having it on all of your troops is impressive. (It might also be why the black armor works so well)
Not a fan of the anime hair. I know that DE have a bit of influence from that genre, but still not a fan. The style is manageable, but with the added color...
I like the bases, but the cutting of the plasticard was a bit sloppy, and I think it will be quite difficult to clean up. Any thoughts on how to do that?
Again, good to see you!

If the plasticard overhangs the base, it's easy to cleanup - otherwise, not so much. Not sure how these ones are being done, but I cut out plasticard larger than the base top, glue, dry, and then trim with a knife to follow the base side, filing to taste. Trying to cut a perfect circle is difficult without a blade/compass tool - and it will leave a hole in the centre to be patched...

Ok. I fixed the pics lol. Thanks whale, it was your feedback that steered me in that direction
Rawson! Great to hear from you Nothing like playful b*tching to generate interest in your blog eh? Hehe. As for your feedback, thank you! Agreed on the plasticard. If you recall, I'm not the modeler that you are, and many here are, so I make newbie mistakes on the ground floor lol. I used scissors to cut them into small discs. I tried to get them as even as possible but I wonder if there is a tool that can do it more evenly? As for the anime hair, well, I've a tendency to use somewhat....um, flamboyant, colors. As the army grows perhaps I can win you over im certainly gonna try hehe Thanks again for your feedback fellas, keeps me inspired

LOVE the highlighting beebop!
Is really thin paint the secret to doing that? I get so frustrated when highlighting black armor.

Dark schemes are always hard to pull off, black either looks under highlighted so people think you're not trying, or over highlighted so it looks grey.
You've struck a lovely balance, and the sharp highlights really pop. The blue skin is an interesting touch, not one that I think I would have done, but with the combination of the blue OSL it compliments the scheme nicely.
Look forward to more

Mounted Kroot Tracker

Wow! It's been another 3 months since my last post! At this rate ill never finish anything:( haha, I hope everyone has had a good coupla' months! my last few posts centered around a dark eldar army that I had some momentary inspiration on. Sadly I couldn't keep it up, I found I had painted myself into a corner and finally gave up on that color scheme. With that a new focus for my plog. Armies I'd love to paint but probably would never finish. ((Seriously)).
So with that said, the first installment of:
Armies I'd Love to paint but probably will never finish!!
Upon the recent release of the new tau I was hoping to see updated fire warriors. I've flirted with tau before and thought this might be a good time. Sadly, there was no update to the sculpt so In my frustration, I decided to toy with an idea I'd been bouncing around. An all Kroot army that's rebelled on its tau owners!! Here's what I came up with with some minor converting and green stuff, which is about as good as i can do at the moment lol. The mini is clearly unfinished, certain deets around, the gun isn't finished, needing more coats and cleaner lines in certain parts. Though i did start putting battle damage on it as the shield too. Also note the red Kroot hand print on the shield. An act of defiance!!
I always start out with a plan to paint quickly as this would be a troop choice and I'd need quite a bit. I'm about 4 hours in:( Also, the base idea I especially stole from somewhere on the net, but ill be painting in a lush vibrant green Jungle vibe.
Hope ya like! C and C always appreciated!
Peace ya'all. More pics to come when finished

Haha, hey vik!! I know, it's just terrible, if I could just keep my momentum up! What it appears to be that, when I come back to las Angeles for vacation, I paint like a madman, then when I go back to NYC, I don't even play any 40k since my catachan are in la as well. :( oh well it Guves me time to ponder on ideas and inspiration lol. I trust all is well with you! I was your part of the globe to long ago. At least I think, I was in bern Switzerland for a week. I believe you're in Germany but bern is so much closer than I normally am :p
As per your comments, and as usual dead on lol. As you know my Modelling is far on the back burner and Until now, pretty much I hadn't done a single conversion. This guy here I'd say is my first mild success. In this case, I think I needed to cut his other leg also and twist the waist down to give the look that he's sauntering up the ruin. Good eye, I was merely concerned about not gluing my fingers together!!! Lol
Anyways, he's done! Lol. The base was almost a total disaster, not the ruin, but the green under. I used the wrong mix of colors then proceeded to glue grass on it that was also the wrong color. Anyways, thank goodness for texture paint!! I'm very pleased with how this came out. I love the colors and I could enjoy painting many more of these, despite the long paint per model. Here are a bunch of pics. Please offer up your comments and suggestions and advice!
Cool! Hopefully ill have more on the way! Be cool everyone

by all means... convert more minis... you soon find out that this part of the hobby is very fulfilling!... so fulfilling in fact that i have lots of minis to paint but being more of a modler myself the amount of built minis exceeds by far the amount (way too big of a word really^^) of painted models...
the finsihed model looks really stunning... not only do i like kroot... one of these days i get me a squad of these too... but i like that strong scheme...also...the weathering on base and shoulder pad looks perfect!... lots of tiny details like the handprint make this model one of a kind...
the only thing that makes me wonder though is why the two schemes...the drone and the kroot...wouldn´t it be more logical to have the drone the same scheme as the shoulder pad and the gun suggests?

Haha, yeah i thought you might say that. I certainly thought about it. However I think ultimately I didn't want that much white on the model, especially the base. I wanted a warm green foil for the rest of the mini. Fluff wise, I believe I'll add many different pieces of different tau septs to represent the many failed attempts to subjugate this particular Kroot tribe.

Thanks steingass! I believe it has gotten a worse, or maybe different. Not sure, but either way I like this mini lol. I saw you mentioned thin paint In an earlier post, when asking about edge highlighting on those dark eldar. That's exactly the case, I always use super thin paint and many coats built up over black to get the brightest deepest color I can. With the edge highlighting I let the paint dry a tudge so it doesn't run and I use a long thin needle like brush to apply it.

I dunno I'm sure it's been done to death lol. It's not bad taking your advice with converting and it's actually super fun:p. I originally wanted the shield either an almost bright red orange, contemplated just grey like the gun, but actually, I got the inspiration for that Camo pattern from a character in swtor, so I think I'll do the shield in the bright green Camo like is shoulder pad.

wasn´t meant as this idea was overused... no... i did a steampunk captain america just the other month... although... i used a chimera tank hatch for the shield^^...
so i don´t judge that shield idea as bad
and yup... converting i think is YOUR next level...as you already are a top notch painter... the only way to level yourself is to make new and surprising minis...and in my opinion... every model straight from the counter is been overdone...BUT convert said model...huzza new greatness ahead^^... now i just have to reacj your painting level... timescale...twenty something years^^... and we can talk anew^^
camo shield pattern... now this i wanna see.... recently i have made my first attempts in camo... tho a rather randomly stipling pattern... your tiger stripes are way too demaninding to me to let me try it ... so go ahead... i like your plan^^

I'd paint the shield in a different Tau pattern, maybe a typical Tau color to look like it's looted from something else maybe? Fantastic work though!

Alright! Another guy is finished! I'm on the right track but man this one took awhile. 8 hours for just him:( I have to remember that each mini is different and I can never exactly recreate what I did b4' even if I liked. I did some touching up here n there, I suppose it could be cleaner, but it's pretty sharp and the I phone cam is so blown up. I touched up his antennae too after taking these pics. The Camo pattern came out not bad but I was having difficult adding chips n damage to such a busy scheme that spans many colors.
@ stein, I'm definitely going to be doing that but i don't know if ill use common tau sept themes. I probably will tailor them to fit the scheme. I'm going for bag of skittles vibe:p, lol
@ vik nice suggestion:p
Anyways, here's #2! CandC appreciated!

uhhh yes!... goood looking shield... that red sure makes him pop!
camo is really good looking and together with the blue skin and the red contrasts i think the major selling aspect of these minis...
but what i really like is the weathing...i have the highest respect for that 2D effect of painting... it looks touchabble...although my brain tells me of course everything is just smooth...(ok some scratches before painting... but you didn´t really use these )
