I liked the previous WIP.
I like this one too.
Honnestly, I think that my scheme looks great. And you transcend it, nice brush-work here.

I'd really love to see an army with this scheme. If anyone is crazy enough to do it, it would be awesome. ^_^

PS : the blond hair don't bother me, maybe he likes to go surfing on his free time, who knows ? Keep it so, it looks good to me !

Well my beard is quite a bit darker than my hair so it quite plausible

And i like the glowing bullet holes. Although as they are green it looks a bit like a bio weapon, maybe poisoned projectiles

@Nerdy: Man, totally. I almost didnt realize why i was so pleased with the blonde hair...then you mention it...and i think. Duke Nukem. Yes.
@Storag: i believe you have mentioned it but i like hear it nonetheless
@Minus: Thanks man! So glad you are approving of my artistic liberties here! But its a fun scheme to paint man. Really a good one
@Mordain: Glad you like it. That exactly what i was going for. Though i wonder if adding more random sized holes will increase the effect...

So today...is kinda a big update. Because i tackled a couple daunting things on this mini, and i didnt back down lol. And i learned alot. If you plan on doing high gloss NMM on smalll detailed bits, make sure your modelling of mold lines is perr - errr --fect. =_+ not too bad but the slightest wierdness can really screw up your eye! So i finished gun basically...except some tidying up...I repainted the crest jewel but now im not sure i like it..but i thought there was too much white in too small an area with the matching metal crest...what do you guys think?
Also got the sword casing done. Lots of nice pink battle damage. Yeah, making headway with this guy. Most of the hard parts are done Except the teeth and handle of the chain saw all being nmm, the rest should paint up easylike! Also, i have not done any further work yet on the purple, but its not quite done and mostly undone on the back tunic.
Anywho...heres todays update!

Ok that does it for today! Comment? Advice? Concerns? Voice your opinion^_^

Great job, BB! Pink is awesome!

Yet, I have to note something: if you're aiming for the Sky-Earth NMM on the barrel, the line between bright and dark parts should be horizontal, more like this:

Maybe he would look better in blue than pink... Who the hell chose that color scheme ?

Nice job. I dig the white stripes (no, not the rock band) on the sword. That's the kind of detail that I often add to my models (see my Ultramarines, or my orks vehicles), I love the reference.

Thanks guys so much! I'm glad that he's coming out so well. This one of those cases where honestly, it looks better in person even and my iPhone isn't doing it justice! :( I'm hoping once minus gets it hell do a nice photo op with our brother minis, maybe?
ishkatar, thanks always for your expert opinion. I'm not going for sky earth per say, but just a sharper nmm. Is there a difference even? In terms of theory? Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the line always follow the angle of the cylinder shape? On all the tuts I've been reading, not even mini tuts, just theory, it stats that it always does follow it's angle. But then yes, you see models done in sky earth and it seems totally different. Any NMM experts wish to chime in here? The tricky bit for me is deterining what the hell version of nmm im doing!! At the end of the day there appears to be many different ways and effects that fall under the nmm label. I've been studying alot of minis too so there's quite a few examples to draw from in any "school" you wish to represent. Anyways, curious to your thoughts on this ish, and anyone else! This is important for me to know because I want to do this right and understand the rules, the technique is there, but there rules...you know what they say...teach a man to fish...

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

That is looking amazing. The sword is a thing of beauty, you could have gone the 'easy' route of hazard stripes, but tying in with the armour and the addition of double white stripes is an inspired. Wonderful model... I wanna see a whole squad of them now, plus a Sentinel - ooh and a Valkyrie

Thanks Dr H! I think the weathering is coming out nicely too. The sword is in fact my favorite part of the mini! My LEAST favorite part is the kit...Im having some less than desirable results with the kit...im not sure why..perhaps its the brown leathers?...more than anything, i dont like the canteen. I am redoing the metal aquila i think, and possibly maybe the knife handle. ((EDIT: i think i may also repaint the canteen black. Suggestions?)) Doing this in nmm is making my head and eyes hurt...the fact that its coming out this well on other parts is a miracle...My new issue with nmm, is that it seems you probably should paint everything on the model nmm if you use it once! The hardest applications are the really small parts like the aquila. Anyways...there are things i like about todays efforts a few that i dont love. The green OSL from the chainsword handle is purposefully a greener green. I kind of like the idea of a this bedazzled trooper standing in the mist on some Gem World. Also i still havent done anywork n the back purples, his hand and chainsword handle need finishing as well as the teeth and boot. Im having to show super zoomed in pics, that become pixelated, so i hate to once again stress, that it looks alot better than these iphone pics are showing. enough excuses...heres what i got.

thoughts?

I'm out of words for it. Really.

Just amazing.

For what it may be worth, I'd say you give the black canteen a go, but that's just to add something to the WOW comment, not that it really needs a change.

Not much, but there is. SENMM just implies that it's a very reflective surface and sky is your main source of light.
You can always imitate an angle of light falling - it will determines the emplacement of every highlight on your miniature along with the reflections on the metallic surfaces.
E.g. I like to imitate the light source so like it's slightly above and in front, giving more highlight to the upper and frontal areas of a miniature, but it's just a matter of preference.
There's only one "rule" so to say: if you have chosen your generic light source, it affects EVERY detail on your object. And that leads to the great pain when you have more than one NMM object on your model... In fact, it will affect the highlights and reflections on the "gem armor" too, but it hurts me to even think about this

 bebopdrums2424 wrote:

Yes, it should. Yet, it's horizontal, if Sky is your light source. The cilinder just deforms this line.
If your surface is very reflective, it can mirror the landscape around it. In that case your "horizontal line" can be of a very different and interesting shape, depending on the objects it reflects. But the concept remains the same.
Personally, I don't see much sense in doing complicate reflections if it's not a diorama - the basic Sky-Earth works just fine, imo.

Nevertheless, a great update! I like the sword a lot and besides your doubts the leather on the kit looks fairly good on the back shot.

@Littletower. Thanks bro!! I think i may try the black. My concern was initially there wasnt enoiugh pink on his back...
@Ishkatar: Thanks for the reply Ish! Yes everything you say makes sense. I think that im (trying) following this rule mostly, though im sure there are spots where its a little flimsy. Im REALLY trying to learn how to do this properly, this being my 2nd time with it really. Each time i do it i get a little better at understanding where i need to spend more time and where i need to spend less time lol. Like i said, the brush control is there, its the rules i need to get together and, so far, im confident that im beginning to slowly understand it lol!! Also the leathers are just that, fairly good. The rest of the mini is superior and that pisses me off. LOL. I can still repaint what i need to so ill be letting it sit. now...just to play devils advocate a bit....

Well... I'll try to explain what I think:
It looks like the light hits the rank badge from the frontal side of the miniature - it reflects the light on the front and in shadow on the back side of the arm.
The light also hits the gun barrel from the back and left side from what I see.
So, it looks like there are two different sources of light.
Also, there's a sword...

...And now my head explodes!

LOL. YOUR head explodes??? Ive got a migraine from staring so hard!! Yeah i know, i hear what you are saying...i see whats going on. Basically whats happeneing is when i spin the mini around...the same light source, IRL, is hitting the model from the opposite side LOL. J H C....so...there are 2 light sources. I think this would be easier if larger parts of te model were nmm?...im really not sure. Im pleased with just gettting each component close to effective, and i think its not the biggest offense. Still alot to learn with this technique. Jeez. Its really not an easy one to get together... Then the next step is better preplanning...

Yeah, it's kinda complicated... I prefer to spray a white paint (or primer) over the black, imitating the light flow, to get the precise impression of what should be where.
As for the barrel... I think if you will pick the frontal above light, as with the badge, it will hit the barrel almost into the muzzle and from above, highlighting the upper part and making a horizontal line across the cylinder, following it's shape.
But if you want to keep current effect on the barrel, the highlighting on the badge should be a bit different, with the light hitting it from the left right into it.
The sword also looks like the light is from the upper-left or something like that...
Though I don't know how any of this variants will go with the overall miniature highlighting.
Not I've got a migraine too

I know...its nuts...but...i gotta say, i dont think all applications of nmm are this strict. I think in some cases, its more the halo around the model that gives light sources, than one specific angle? sigh...i donno...this is what i get for trying too hard

Trying hard is still better than not trying at all

I'm not sure about this strictness... I'm not much of an expert in NMM anyway. But, the light flow can go in a wide dispersed arc, or as a concentrated beam, and more or less, it always have a direction. With a daylight there's a sundial wich is a great example of this.
To get a halo of light around the model you should have several light sources from every derection and even in this case, they will affect each other and every highlight and shadow on the model.
Usually it's not a big deal, but NMM is all about the contrast of light and shadow and the emplacements of highlights affects the overall impression greatly, imo.

Yet, it's not a treatise on the physics of light, but an art object, thus the rule an artist should follow in a first place is a rule of cool
And your miniature coming out nicely nevertheless!

Mate, you've really kicked it up a notch with this. I mean. You know you are doing something right when your painting gets people talking about the physics of light!!!

Loving the way this trooper is coming along. I will leave it there, as I would just be copying the awe of others, except to say "outstanding!".

Fellows! Thanks he's practically done save for the base and some touching up. I'm gonna have to wait till the end of the week to give him the base I want. I finished the purples by and large, and I'm not too interested in adding much more highlight to it. To my eyes, it looks pretty fab without having to go over the top with edge highlights (sorry ish, i still think youre the man!). It looks like velvet or something. I'm pleased with it. Really frustrated with the canteen which has halted yesterday's progress some. I shouldve just left it but, damn it minus, the brown leather kit has thrown a monkey wtench into the scheme. honestly i like it on your mini, less so on this one...But Ill work it out...it's no big deal. I like the leathers more now, still have to tidy up his belt on the inside waist. But really save for the base. It's pretty much done...you'll see before I ship him off to minus
And mordain...using grey for metallic is what NMM is. Those are grey tones in my pics obviously...:p

I have struggled for years trying to paint leather in a way that I like. I only recently found the magic receipe (for me).
What's crazy is that I have tried tons of color mixes, and what works the best (for me, once again) is simple as hell. It only requires 3 colors. (and since it not a secret : snakebite leather, bleached bones and devlan mud... and on the knife I added a bit bestial brown).

True question here is :
Why on earth did you go with NMM on this model ? I did not use this technic on mine.
You are crazy man ! You didn't choose the easy way.

TYVM guys!
Yeah i can dig it. Ive tried alot of different mixes over the years as well because im simply not satisfied unless i think i can paint any kind of leather thats in existence...and since GW has changed their entire line...for the worse i might add...ive been struggling to find the mix i normally used. Which was a bestial brown/ Bubonic / Bleached bone sort of a thing..pretty warm. wjhich brings me to....
I HATE THESE NEEW GW PAINTS!!!! They are SO MUCH LESS SMOOTH/runny...flowing....and if you dare respond with add water to them to thin them or some such thing, you will be virtua-slapped. They dry faster, and holy sh&t, they RUIN my brushes. The paint cakes on them after a while, like it builds up. granted i use filberts for pretty much all of my painting. Still...i dont like the new line at all. Too many colors...different color saturation....i may switch to p3...

minus. im painting a mini for YOU to hold in your hands and see. It has to be good. I hope it does you honorably.

It will look good Bebop.
I don't worry about that. In fact... I worry about mine. Won't it look like crap beside yours.

And I agree with you concerning GW's current paint range. For instance GW succeeded in making a black paint that doesn't cover despite it's thick. How could they do that ?
I am switching to Army Painter progressively, and I'm happy with that range. It's quite similar to the previous GW paints, so that's perfect for me.
