What's left film-wise out of curiosity? As a peripheral Star Wars fan I'm not sure what super awesome ships I've missed zipping around in episodes 4-6.
B-wings, Tie Bombers, Lambda shuttle.....?
All of those. Granted, it's not all that much, but my point is really just that I would prefer to see all of those things produced before they go off on an EU tangent, which I'll be able to largely safely ignore.

While possible, I don't really see it happening.
I'm sure they could fit them in. They don't really work for deep-space settings, but for high altitude scenarios, etc (Wookiepedia suggests that they work in low orbit as well). Plus they're from the films and people will buy them(!)

Not as much as you'd think. Unlike other areas where there are multitudes of additional stories via books, comics and games, there are people at LucasFilm whose only job was to keep it all together. There are canon levels, and they are adhered to.
Yes, there are ret-cons (Adia Gallia dying at the hands of Savage Opress rather than Grievous being the most recent example), but most things like this have ret-cons.

You must know more than we know then, because no one has heard anything specific about this. We can speculate, yes, but that's all it is - speculation.
The films being top-tier canon have always happily run roughshod over the EU. At best, they may pay lip service or incorporate small elements of the EU into new films, but they've shown that they're quite happy to ignore it all, since the EU is really just additional merchandising. There's one that's even worse than IG-88, actually - but I've forgotten it. Should I remember it, I'll post it in here.

Oh yeah, the movies aren't a whole lot better than the EU in many ways, I will grant. Especially the prequels that fell into the same kind of "we need to meet Greedo, and Chewbacca, and Baby Boba, and Young Han (thankfully excised from the final scripts). But then, I don't think that Lucas is a godlike genius as many SW fans seem to. These days he's mostly a hack who did manage to show some talent when we was much younger and has surrounded himself with some wonderfully creative and talented people right from the start.

They haven't 'run roughshod'. For starters three of them were made before there was any EU (well... partially, Splinter of a Mind's Eye came before ESB and ROTJ, but you know what I'm getting at). And as for Episodes 1-3? They actively included elements from the EU, including on-screen EU characters, mentions of worlds, and so on.

They actively included elements from the EU, including on-screen EU characters, mentions of worlds, and so on. I did say that, and I know that names like Coruscant came from the EU, and so on and so forth. Then again, there's also things like pre-prequel Boba Fett and post-prequel Boba Fett, and we know that while they incorporated little bits of EU into the prequels, along with some Fan Service they also did whatever the hell they wanted without regard for staying true to a story that some guy wrote up in a book in 1992 or what have you. (and I don't blame the filmmakers for that, either. Personally, I hope they ignore all the awful ( IMO) post-ROTJ EU like Darth Twilek-Stripper-Maul and the Yuzaan Vong(sp) and make something that's to the quality of the Marvel films. Which may ignore things like physics, but still manage to be a lot of fun and feasable (if you just ignore that gaping logic hole here and there) like most of the OT was. But really, I don't care enough about SW or the EU to have a big fanwank argument with you over it. I've pretty much said my piece and if you disagree with my opinions, that's cool.

Nice that you're throwing out words like "fanwank" as if that means something to me. I've said nothing of the sort. I guess you also assume that I'm one of those "George Lucas Uber Alles" style fans. Not true either. Fact is that I'm one of those SW fans who basically accepts everything at face value. I take the good with the bad, regardless of source, and it doesn't bother me. Only one thing in SW has ever annoyed me, and that was Episode 3 - a movie that promised so much, yet delivered so little - but other than that I really don't care what's out there. It's all Star Wars to me. I dislike the "There are only 3 Star Wars films!" fans. I dislike the "There are only 6 films and nothing else" fans. I dislike the "The EU sucked ever since they killed Chewbacca!" fans. I just take it all. I don't defend it, but I don't feel the need to decry any of it either. I don't want TIE/d's in this game because "Omigod the EU is t3h awesomes!!!". I want them because they're cool ships. I don't care where they came from or what their origin lies or what level of canon they're from. They're cool ships. That's all that matters to me.

Uh, no. I didn't mean either of those as snide remarks towards you, and I actually haven't had the intent to be insulting towards you in any way in this thread. If I had, well, I'd quite openly admit as much. It's just how I feel about those arguments and the direction our discussion was headed down. I'm one of the "I like 3 of the films a lot, 2 of them were alright, and one was mostly rubbish" people (and not in the order most people think, either). I also really like selected bits of the EU, while considering most of it to be fanwank overmerchandised rubbish.
Still, I'd much rather see the spaceships that I saw on the big screen taken care of first, and after that I can safely ignore or cherry pick the rest at my leisure. Some of the extra TIEs and things actually do look cool, while others ...well, they don't. But I'd like to see the film stuff taken care of before we start worrying about Baron Fels' specific TIE fighter.
Does that make more sense?

That does seem to make more sense - though seeing Baron Fel get a card for an Interceptor and an X-Wing would be quite col, if they did an EU card expansion down the line. They could do a set just of alternate unique pilot cards, which could be quite cool without needing new models to be sculpted.

I finally broke down and ordered the core set so I could get all of the basic bits (and Luke). I've been playing with just my Y-wings and the X-wing expansion.
And on the topic of the EU, I tend to agree with HBMC that Lucasfilms have done a pretty good job of keeping things from being outright contradictory (I'm sure there were some minor things I didn't even notice). I will caveat by pointing out that I haven't read much that came out after the YV books. I didn't enjoy those very much. I've read almost everything else that came out before that, though.
Oh, and I quite liked Tales of the Bounty Hunters. Try not to take it so seriously

I created a printable space map for Melior Via recently, because I've been playing another space combat game a bit. I think it might also be useful for X-Wing. If anyone's interested in giving it a shot and letting me know what they think about it, I'd be happy to throw a free download link to, say, the first 5 people that PM me with a request.
Here's the link to the product:
Universal Space Combat Battlemap: Tarantula Nebula
Note that it's big enough to cover a 72" x 48" table. It does require you to use layers before printing to just turn on or off the types of hexes or squares that you want to use. I haven't received much feedback on this yet, and I'd like opinions.

Here in the USA we can get the game at Target...a big box store similar to Walmart. Thought thats means paying full retail.
As far as what ships the make, Id like to see the Episode 1-3 ships done before EU. Say what you will about the films, there were some cool ships. Sure, most were a bit out-dated by X-WIng & TIE days, but the Star Wars universe is well known for keeping old ships running for a long time. It would help for a bit of realism (so to speak) to have some more run of the mill ships involved, instead of each release bringing even more powerful ships. Should that happen it would be like playing 40k, only the newest releases would be worth playing, as the old stuff would be cannon fodder.

FFG isn't as readily available around here, nor in great quantities or from the regular shops sadly. I've got a feeling getting the other ships for a reasonable price will be quite a chore.

I am really interested in this game, was greatly disappointed by Star Wars: Starship Battles by WotC, but this game sounds great (I still would like a good SW fleet level game, though).

I think someone high up in Target must like Star Wars and miniature games, as they were the only major chain store to carry WotC's Star Wars Miniatures Game when it was around (and they had the starters and many expasions in good quantaties, too).

Yeah it surprised me as well since it isnt even remotely a board game. I figure that since its done by a board game company someone at Target was scanning the lists for things to stock and simply saw what to them looked like a Star Wars board game, and since Star Wars stuff sells well it went onto the stock list.

Nah, it's just that if a kid see's the star wars logo, he begs his mom to buy it no matter what it is, and she buys it just to shut him up, so it's an easy sale.

yeah, Wave 2 delayed till February : ( ... ...with a twist. FFG wrote:Due to a slight delay at the factory, the second wave of X-Wing expansions won’t be available until February. Then be sure to check our website in early December for the full list of participating retailers in order to make your plans to attend. In the meantime, start building your squads and getting in your practice games. This is your chance to be among the first in the world to claim the Millennium Falcon, Slave I, an A-wing, or a TIE interceptor.[/spoiler] Not sure how I feel about the only way to get hold of something I preordered is having to jump through hoops... or the inevitable eBay monster prices! I is disappoint. Panic...
