#1. A deck box for the cards.
#2. A plano box for all the tokens and dice.
#3. If you aren't getting a second starter, then you either need to extra dice pack, or the dice app.

That's about it.

agreed on one and two; three is a matter of personal taste, rerolling a die every now and then isn't all that bad. Really though, getting that dice pack is bad value - you'll want the second starter in the end anyway
I would, however, swap the Y-Wing for an A-wing if you can only get one of the two (getting both obviously being the preferred solution here )

Well I'm going to give it a go.

Picked up two starters, a X-wing, TIE, TIE Advanced, Y-Wing, Falcon and Slave 1.

Will see where it goes from there.

Really tempted.. as I know my eldest lad would love it. Especially if he gets to play the Falcon.

So, is it overly complicated?

My eldest in nine, getting on ten. He plays 40K with little issue, some minor tactics problems buts that more about his age rather than his ability to play the game. He's also played Heroclix, and Star Wars Mini's with little issue, and beats me at Carcassonne, is learning Warhammer fantasy at the moment.

Do folks who have played it reckon he'll enjoy it, or have played with kids of a similar age range, wargame understanding with no issues?

You'll have no trouble at all bro, none. This game is extremely straighforward and easy to grasp, 9 year olds should have no problem at all. Grasping the nuances of list building may be a little tricky (it is for me lol) but the beauty of it is, even in it's simplest most vanilla form it is still great fun and engaging -

My stuff was shipped this morning, so should be here tomorrow. Looking forward to having a good read of the rules and preparing to introduce the eldest lad to it this weekend.

MDS, you will need about 20 mins, it's only 18 pages the whole rulebook! you could play that night honestly lol!

Dot forget they have quick rules to get you started! Only real difference between main game and beginner rules is the addition of items, I believe. And characters with abilities. The quick start rules are great and a single page.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Indeed. If you just play with generic ships for the first game and no upgrades, you should pick up the flow of the game and basic rules in 15 minutes. One of the things that I really like about the game is that I feel that the very small learning curve hides some very elegant depth as well for people willing to invest the time (and money via ships of course) to learn it.

Me and my friend got started, about 5 minutes after buying the game. We had a veteran helping us. But honestly we picked it up pretty quick.

Ah excellent, even better.

Still sadly going to have to wait till tomorrow at least to play our first game. (Normally I'd be off from 6pm on a thurs but the lady who shuts up is on holiday this week, and when she is off I have to be in.)

wave 3 has officially moved one step closer to in all our grubby hands as its now listed as "at the printer" on the FFG website!

Just a side note here... especially for UK/EU gamers who like star maps with nebulas who didn't want to pay international shipping from the US, there's a company coming out with one for less than 34 GBP and it's 4x6. The asteroid themed one is quite nice as well.

Thought the asteroid one was pretty attractive until I saw the brontosaurus bones on them... wtf...

Price wise, I printed my gigantic nearly 9ft by 4ft mat for 80 bucks on outdoor vinyl, so these aren't all the great as a deal though not ludicrous either.

Keep an eye on the resources thread, in the next few days I am going to be submitting my reviews for many of the third part stuff I have purchased, including Hammer and Forge Asteroids with template accurate acrylic bases, corsec arc templates, some imperial and rebel acrylic templates and the mat - Should be helpful for those on the fence -

The Hammer & Forge asteroids seem nice but it would appear they aren't making/selling them at the moment :/

They must have sold out again, they only went back in stock 2 weeks ago! Let that be a lesson H/F lol!

I give them a recommend, but with some caveats. Long story short, though I will get into it more later, a lot of the paint chipped off them in transit, the foam asteroids rubbing together in the bag, and the delicate nature of some of the details derived from the manufacturing method makes them pretty delicate.

I would have continued painting them anyways with my airbrush (which I did) but had I wanted them to work straight out of the box so to speak and had no desire to bust out a paint pot, then I would not have been happy about it. I told the guys and they seem to be working to resolve it so the next batch should be free or mostly free from the issue.

On the plus side, the bases and the rods are absolutely perfect! flawlessly done, snug and dry fitting, correct height, stable, polished completely smooth on the sides... strong strong recommend on that front alone.

You can buy the bases without the asteroids, but I want to make clear that despite the paint problem the asteroids are pretty awesome too, nice look and feel, good variety, lend themselves nicely to very quick techniques to upgrade the paint jobs... all of it.

All in all, if the price is right for you, I recommend H/F asteroids overall, most importantly for the detachable pegs and the game accurate base shapes making them flawless stand-ins for the originals, that will give you no worries at a tournament or anywhere else.

I made some myself out of lava coal (a kind of fake charcoal you can buy to dress up gas BBQs) along with some foam board and metal rods but mine were created for BFG before I bought into X-Wing so no doubt the scales are off. Also, the bases don't match the in box templates so they won't really work. Would be interested in the H&A ones if/when they produce more.

Yeah,
Just checked those out.
I like them except for the H/F logo on he base.

I'm looking to buy some astroid bases for my fighter wrecks, but because of the logos I will buy somewhere else.

Gale Force 9 do some as well I believe, but I think they are a bit pricier.

The HF logo is actually nearly invisible, I was kind of concerned about the same thing but I think these ones may be painted in for the sake of the photos.

The main issue with the GF9 ones is the bases are not template accurate, so besides looking pretty, you need to be able to move the asteroids off and leave the templates to resolve collisions or overlap. Same size circles are usable of course, but you need to get those asteroids off, and uneven sizes and silhouettes make the distances a bit harder to judge for fine flying

Just received my Hammer and Forge asteroids and a set of movement templates.
Only did a quick unboxing at work, which is where they are now so I'll have a better look tomorrow.
First impression is not fantastic. It's apparent looking at the pics now, but I didn't realize that the asteroids were just lumps of insulation foam sprayed so that they melt a bit
Important part is the templates though, which I'll get a better look at tomorrow.

So I'm pretty sure I'm going down the rabbit hole on this game. I'm looking at 2-3 Core Sets, 2 of each smaller ship, and 1 of each larger. At least that sounds about right from what I'm reading in the various threads.

I do think it's pretty funny that some people act like these ships are worth their weight in gold. Some of the outrageous prices make me actually laugh out loud. People selling stuff for twice the cost of retail.......

Shrug, it's what people are willing to spend on ebay. I managed to sell an X-Wing, A-Wing and Intercepter all on eBay at double retail value. Still have two X-Wings and an A-Wing ready to go online.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I'll end up getting 6 of each smaller ship, I think. I have them all currently, with the exception of Wave 2... I only have 1 A-Wing and no TIE Interceptors. (Of course, the TIE Interceptor is one of my favorite ships. Figures.)

Gotta be patient, waiting on that July date...

I think it's more to do with not wanting to spend some extra time and find stuff that's out there.

Of course if someone said; "Hey I found a place that has some A-Wings online."

They'd be gobbled up and resold.
