I bought a digital calliper for £20 from antics ( a chain of model shops in the uk, they have a website too) a while ago and have no idea how I lived without it, gone are the days of my disorganised pile of miscellaneous drill bits and the squint-and-hope for the best method of measurement.

Nice one red, You'll be in 4 figures before you know it .

My calipers are long buried under a stack of sprues somewhere....never needed them when I had orky-know-wotz to deal with it, maybe the dark mechanicus will unearth the tek - or maybe Slaanesh wants to gift them with the exquisite despair of parts not quite being perfect.

Wow Red, I forget you're a relative newcomer here - obviously the quality of your work counts for far more than your length of service

I'm still at the squint-and-hope stage. Which it followed by the sand-it-until-it-fits stage
Hopefully my Dad has one I don't know about, if not, I will definitely look into getting one.

Update time!
This second dozer blade has been quite a bit of work to get it to fit, due to it being a slightly different angle from the first...

First off, the ribs that hold the dozer in shape were in the way and I had to shave them down to give the pistons a clear view of the dozer and allow me to add some flat plates to attach the hinges to.
This picture shows what I mean and the final arrangement.

So, with that, both blades are done to the base level ready for the additional details (and riveting). See if you can spot the difference...

I have just decided that the small, secondary blades don't need to move and will be fixed in place. They are only there to protect the sponsons and those have quite a bit of ground clearance. Therefore the blades, don't need to reach all the way to the ground and so don't need to move in order to follow the terrain. This will make life much easier.
Giving them a curve won't be easy though...

Good job with the pistons, looks great

Are you planning for the secondary blades to be curved in both planes?

Thanks MT. No, just curved in the "normal" way you would expect.
Just being that they are shorter in that dimension, means it's going to be trickier than for the larger blades. Just need to find the right former to bend them over.

You need to go nuts like me dude and go apply some heat to the situation, 5 minutes and I could give you a perfectly curvy set of blades.

Looking great BTW. And I would agree I am not sure you need the secondary blades. Of course you go for it, and it will look perfect I am positive.

OH and I have a micrometer kicking around only trouble is it's in Imperial. Yours if you want it.

Ta. We will see what it looks like before it become permanent.

monkeytroll wrote:I don't think "need" is a thing where the scientist is coming from
Not necessarily "need" as such. But I do have reasons for adding them. But if the final look is a bit much, one way or another, then I can do without.
I do also have a backup plan if the mini-dozers don't look right; some railings that will direct things away from the guns. Won't know what is best until we try though.

Camkierhi wrote:You need to go nuts like me dude and go apply some heat to the situation, 5 minutes and I could give you a perfectly curvy set of blades.
Ja, I will try the trusty hairdryer first before setting anything on fire. This black plasticard is quite soft as it is really, so doesn't need much encouragement.

Looking great BTW. And I would agree I am not sure you need the secondary blades. Of course you go for it, and it will look perfect I am positive.
Thanks. Well the final result will be (close to) perfect, whether that involves the mini-dozers is yet to be seen.

OH and I have a micrometer kicking around only trouble is it's in Imperial. Yours if you want it.
Ta. There is apparently something similar in the garage somewhere. If I can't find it, I may give you a shout.

No actual progress to report today. Why?
I've been busy organising lots of bits. Why have I been organising lots of bits?
Because my friend, that sells my painted models in his ebay shop, has given me (that's given as in free ) a metric -ton of bits that he can't be arsed to sell for tiny profits.

There is... *takes deep breath*...
a load of Ork, Orc and goblin bits; a few guns, some bows, a bunch of spears, many arms, quite a few heads (mostly goblins) and a selection of shields with decorative pieces.
3 random metal torsos with clubs
some metal shields and some metal weapons (the tab says Warlord Games)
A load of goblin legs that from the poses look like they sit on the load of wolf-like things (8 in total and 2 extra armoured-heads)

AND;
A bunch of other random Fantasy bits; some metal arms with spears (one appears to have got the short straw ) and another with a shouty-face club thing (I'm sure you all know what it is), an armoured arm, the top of a halberd, random metal head with horns , a chaos bit of decoration, and a random spike.
A skeleton torso and arm.
Some other shields that aren't Orc ones.
and two thirds of a tank trap.

And, a load of Space Marine bits (mostly old), including arms, backpacks, bolters, bolt pistols, knives, and shoulder pads.
A few random chaos looking bits (3 shoulder pads, 2 bolt pistols, a bolter, 2 arms and a backpack).
A flamer.
and a few other little bits.
A bunch of Tyranid bits; mostly leftover bits and upgrade parts. Most I have seen before, except the really large guns and the large carapace parts.

And, 3 pairs of what look like Eldar arms
and a few Tau bits together with a firewarrior (that's been painted in a delightful diarrhoea brown with lime green armour)

AND;
A bike frame (looks like it's supposed to have treads at the back)
A hatch
and a sprue of little links for a chain or a really small tread.
and some tree like pieces.

And finally, a load of transfers; lots of SM ones, a couple of Cadian ones, SM scouts, Space wolves Land...(assuming ...speeder), Space wolves Bikes, Ork Scorcher and Ork War truck and a Gorkamorka 1 and 2.

And a flag that may or may not look nice on my tank when it's done.

Not a bad bonus for a job well done.

Nice haul

The shouty-face club thing is a musician's horn

The bike is an old ork bike, minus the track, the tree things are indeed trees - old GW jungle trees.

The non-orc shields are Empire.

No idea what the tiny track links are from - Robotech maybe? - but they look like they'll be useful.

Looking forward to seeing what the scientist comes up with for all the loot.

Well if someone sees something that they need, feel free to let me know (before I chop it up for my own purposes).
I've always felt that I'm behind on the bits front compared to the rest of you on here, as I've only been collecting these models for not quite 2 years.

I was close... Alright, I wasn't close, but that doesn't mean I can't use it as a shouty-face club thing. It might just end up on a future noise marine...

The trees are from the 3rd edition box 40k. I have a bunch of those trees. They are a bit fragile. 3rd ed blew chunks, BTW.

That's an old Rhino hatch. There was a bolter that glued into the little hole in the center.

An interesting haul. Everything looks to be close to 15 years old or thereabouts. 'Bout the same age as the bits I still have lying around.

Ta. I thought I recognised the hatch from one of Gits' tanks.

Yeah, many of the sprues had '90s dates on them and some '00s. I think my mate just picked them out of a random bin of random sprues in a local shop to him. Shame there's nothing local to me but fields... But that's what friends are for.

And, progress on the dozers...

As the mini-dozers are only for pushing things aside and not for dozer-ing I've only given them a slight curve.
These are now (more-or-less) ready for the support beams/rods/whatever I decide to use to attach them with...

Still a little tidying up I can see in these pictures and they may even get some modifications (e.g. get shorter) at some point before the end.

Also, I've added the hydraulic hoses for the pistons.

They weren't quite the easy job I expected and they're not perfect and will either look fine in the end or will be modified.

Thanks.

Excellent work, mini-blades look great. Feed pipes are cool, but........

I have a tiny issue! Your hydrolics on the larger piston the pipe goes into the hull directly into the track housing? Maybe it should cut across into the body. Maybe I am wrong and please tell me to shut up. In my head there are tracks wanging about just under that plate where the pipe currently enters.

Well it can't be any harder than the inside was. At least I was sensible enough to leave things like the dozer blade and turret separate to aid painting.

All thoughts are welcome. Yes, the tracks are just under there, but the armour must be quite thick in that region. The pipework could run through (or just under) the armour. I didn't want a long trailing hose on the outside as that's an obvious weak point, and why I kept the hoses inside the protection of the hinges.

Thanks Solar.

The mini-dozers, however, I'm not so sure on now...

Blu-tacked on to test the look:

While in theory, they are kind of needed. I'm not feeling the look with them on.
Maybe they are a bit plain (I don't have the space to jazz them up much), but together with the main dozer, they seem to make the front view of the tank a bit boring... The main blade will add detail to the model, with all the spikes and things, but these just hide detail without adding anything.

I may try and see what a rail will look like and if not, leave them all off.
