Just talked to y FLGS owner and had a chat about the new WD. Apparently he was on the phone with GW doing an order and talking about the new WD. He says it will be *small form factor* magazine. I don't know what the official designation is, but is going to be about the size of the National Geographic magazines (?). Or, according to the store owner, the GW rep described it as 'about as big as an iPad'....

The plot thickens: Smaller size, FinePaper, higher prize, maybe some content, that's the GW we know

...
Have you ever actually seen a National Geographic or similar periodical?
They're "smaller" in the fact that they are about the same height and width as the Forge World catalogs. In terms of thickness, they are the same--if not thicker--as the current White Dwarfs.

They're also printed on much better quality paper, with binding that will not fall apart after multiple readthroughs.

BTW is there a price for finding the first Chapterhouse conversion part on a Flickr-pool pic in WD ?

Why would there be?

Seriously. Do you think they go through and police every single post? It's user submitted content, Kroothawk. There's no rules or criteria for submission, just that it is your own photographs and they not be blurry or poorly lit.

I think he means pictures submitted to flickr that are subsequently published in WD; pictures that I would imagine should be looked at closely to judge quality/suitability/3rd party mods etc before being published in print.

Word. Back in the day they did have such things in the magazine. The first issue I ever bought, the issue the Eldar Falcon came out, they included a cardboard Eldar terrain piece. Those were they days...

And why should they give a crap about third party modifications when publishing these pictures?

Quality and suitability are the only criteria which should matter, with third party modifications only being noted as a way for individuals who seek to copy the army's look to be able to do so.

No matter how you spin it, it's a petty complaint against GW when it should be against the user who submits the piece. If I don't note that I used X for some random small conversion, like a single shoulderpad or sword or some tiny bit (because you just know that is what someone is going to start a thread about. Remember when people flipped out about GW noting that someone used their "basing kit" when it was a Micro Arts Studio base?) and they pull my photo for their "White Dwarf Daily"--they're going to use the description that I put on my photo, not necessarily contacting me about it in the process.

Hey, I'm not arguing this one way or the other, simply clarifying what I think he meant (especially in light of the attitude of "GW, GW and nothing but GW" that seems to be prevalent these days in everything GW do ).

I imagine all the money that would otherwise be used to produce content for WD is being spent on a crack team of highly trained monkeys spotting Chapterhouse bits in Flickr photos.

At this point I wouldn't be at all surprised if GW tried to claim they own your photos because they're photos of their models. It's their IP so it's "theirs".

I dunno honestly, just being cynical again I guess. Personally if I didn't want them publishing photos of my models I wouldn't voluntarily send them the photos in the first place.

I actually just decided to dig through Flickr's terms of usage. So here you are, first from the GW Photo Group:
Upload your Games Workshop hobby into our Flickr pool - anything that's in here may well be used on our Facebook page or What's New Today blog. We'd appreciate it if you could remove any logos and URLs from your images and descriptions before submitting them to the pool. That means we will be able to use them online in order to show off your hobby!

Also, though not essential, it would be great if you wrote a few notes about the models you upload. Give as many detail as you can. It's also really useful for other hobbyists looking for specific miniatures.

Here's Flickr's bit for using images posted by members from their FAQ:
I'd like to use a photo I found on Flickr. How do I do that?

Our members share an incredible amount of amazing work on Flickr. If there is an image you'd like to use, look for the "Request to license" link near the license on the photo page. We've partnered with Getty Images who will review the image, determine if it's a good fit for licensing through them, and work out all the details if so.

Not all members have this enabled. If you don't see it you can also contact the member directly. As a member of Flickr, you can move your mouse over someone's buddy icon and click the little arrow to open the "person menu." Then select "Send FlickrMail" and compose your message. When you contact a photographer, it's best to include as much info as possible about the photo, yourself, and how you want to use the photo.

That first part, posted on the GW Flickr group, doesn't mean jack. It just says that it may be used on their "pages". Nevertheless (is that a word? ) you still own the copyright, with all rights, to all of your photos.
UNLESS you have CC BY or CC BY-ND set on your photos.

* You own your photos: When you upload a photo to Flickr, you retain all the rights and ownership over that photo. You can easily change the type of license you want to apply to your photo with a Creative Commons License and allow for certain uses of the image by others, but by default, your photo is set to “All Rights Reserved”. For more details, check out this recent post.

http://blog.flickr.net/en/2011/05/26/your-photos-and-data-on-flickr/

But it's a minor quibble. I just hope they handle it like professionals. Especially since it would mean that it (WD) returns to at least some of its former glory.

The change of paper is interesting. Hopefully they take advantage of the huge range of semigloss paper out there nowadays that still render photos almost like a high gloss paper. IIRC they have the same paper they've used since the late 90's. For me the big thing with WD is the photos. It would suck if they went with some sort of uncoated paper. :/

Aye, foolish indeed. I remind you of the Matt ward hate wagon. At. The end of the day, ward was being paid by GW. If GW had a problem with ward's stuff--which they did not--then ward would have been told to go mount himself, and do his job again. Thus, since ward was paid by GW, he was paid to do what they told him to do. I see the. Same again with WD. The team is on GW's paycheck, so they will do what GW tells them to do, because, hey, actually having a job that gives you money is pretty dang win.

I agree with you to an extent, and I guess there is every possibility that the new magazine will just continue to be a load of corporate-speak toss, and not give us anything except a more expensive version of pics available for free from the internet. But, what perhaps gives me a little bit of heart is that they have brought in an editor from outside of GW for the magazine. There is the possibility that he will have some kind of self-awareness*, beyond having his brain subsumed by the GW machine, and we might get a magazine that is written for the fans - rather than something which is seemingly done to get an A+ grade from the head of sales department, which seems to have been the only priority for the last 4-5 years of the magazine.

* Some years ago (and this is before the mag took a turn for the worst) I met one of the guys working for WD. Not going to give any names, other than to say he no longer works for the mag (as far as I know). Absolute jobsworth - even to me, during the 'golden age' of being a GW employee, and living and breathing the stuff this guy probably would have changed his name by depol to Games Workshop if he had the choice. Seriously, his eyes practically rolled up into the back of his head and he started speaking litanies about how awesome everything was, using a terribly long list of adjectives and extremes to describe anything and everything on the production line. Now, I'm all for believing in what your company is doing, and be enthusiastic about it, but there are limits to when you cross that line and start sounding deranged. To be honest, it's something that is endemic to the company - I found it throughout the upper management I spoke to and listened to - the people who were generally more rational people, more likely to say 'actually.. I don't think introducing a RoW embargo is such a good idea.. we might alienate the fans' have long since given up and left. And that was some years ago, I've got no reason to believe it's any different now.

I just want my magazine to arrive at my house at a decent time. Currently I get it almost two weeks after its release date. Most other magazines try to have it to you home before it hits the newsstand. Maybe this is something else they plan to improve on.

This obsession with flickr pictures being used by GW is getting silly. Seriously, who cares? If you don't want your pic used by GW, don't send it to them. Problem solved!

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

-White Dwarf will be available digitally.
- a new logo
-The subscription model has changed. No longer will you subscribe for 12 months. You will purchase 12 vouchers to redeem at your choosing. This means you can buy 12 magazines from one month, or 1 magazine any month for 2 years from purchase. Basically you choose what months you want to pick up at the store. Dont want next months.... no problem.
-If you purchase the vouchers and pick it up in the store you will get 4 free issues. Subscription price is $80 ($5/issue)
-If you purchase on the website or get it sent to your home, you will get 2 free issues. Subscription price is $100 ($7.14/issue)
- The price is going to be $10/issue or 8 Euros
- They are shooting for around 160 pages an issue.

- higher quality paper, different cover quality
- very picture heavy
- more articles featuring the Black Library, Eavy Metal Team, Design Studios... Much more
- They expect to have more items attached (posters, key fobs, etc.)

- On September 21st, all old issues will be removed from the stores and website
- At the end of the month (the day before new white dwarfs are released) ALL issues will be destroyed permanently (you won’t be able to order back issues from the website). These are going to be inventoried items and tracked, so there won’t be holding any back at the end of the month, similar to the process when they took the old rulebooks and core sets off the shelves.
- Many more issues will be sent to the store.
- The issues should feature current products and not be filled with advertisements for the first 1/3rd of the magazine.

It's all going to be available as a digital release. I really, really freaking hope they don't make it iPad exclusive though. A .pdf magazine would be cool as an option. I find these newly rumored changes interesting though, I hope they pan out.

It's more beneficial to write it off as a loss against tax than hold/store/maybe sell old stock. It seems to be some thing that GW have recently cottoned on to.

I do t imagine for a second any of the old stock would not be recycled what with rules here on sustainability and waste disposal as well as the incredible level of duty level against land fill these days in the UK.
