I've mentioned in other threads that you can buy a Shield or Sword bag from Battlefoam, thus getting a quality bag, and then buy Sabol/ GW foam from someplace like Neal on the cheap. That gives you the best of both worlds. Now, the Sword bag doesn't have the rigid plastic embedded like their nomal bags but this is easily mitigated by putting a rules book (or codex) in the back flap for support. Eazy Peazy.

Now if you only own 1 ark then it's I practical to purcha that tray. If later on you decide you don't need two arks or don't have them to begin with that tray is worthless. So you are then basically stuck with ordering a custom load out. And again later on you can't adjust it as you add to or take from your collection and at a higher price than pluck foam options. I own 5 Sabol bags and aside from the 4 Monoliths and 1 Ark of my 10,000+ points of Necrons everything is fit into 1 Army transport II, 1 Platoon, and a Motorpool Bag. All made by Sabol. I have just now reached the point of needing another bag. And best yet Sabol has an option with the Platoon bag where you can attach multiple Patton bags together or to an Army transport II. I doubt anyone could fit the same models into as few battlefoam bags.
Conversely, I bought the Battalion bag from Sabol for my Tyranid army, and at only around 3k points, I can't fit the entire force into it. For certain armies, sure Sabol may be a good option, but I honestly wish I had just bought the trays and bag from Battlefoam for my Nids.
Also, With my guard army, I bought the precut foam for all my models, and the way I organize everything into platoons allows me to bring upwards of 20 vehicles in one single BF bag (it is the largest one they make mind, but it still fits my entire, finished army) If you are like me, and essentially buy the stuff for one build at a set point value, a custom tray loadout from Battlefoam really can be the most expedient and safest method of transport.
I just remembered while typing this post, I moved from Germany back to the US and the 3 armies that I had shipped in Battlefoam bags (yes, I have 3 armies that go into 3 separate BF cases) had ZERO breakages during the movement across the ocean. Whereas over half of the meticulously placed Nids that were in the Sabol case (and the random minis in the GW case) had breakages. FWIW

I made an account just so I could post this.
Very surprised that no one here has mentioned Feldherr Bags. This is quite possibly the cheapest foam bag on the market right now ignoring the nonsense cardboard boxes sold by Battle foam and KR.
Wayland stocks it, and their trays are around 5-10 pounds. Their 'Feldherr medium logo' bag is slightly larger than a laptop bag, and fits my entire Warmachine collection. Price? 18 pounds.
Compare that to Battlefoam or Army Transport bags which are at least 2 to 3 times more expensive.

But battlefoam doesn't do the carboard box system KR does... It's semi rigid foam in canvas cases reinforced with hard plastic. They recently introduced cardboard boxes for storage, but it's hardly necessary to using their cases. I'm using a PACK 1520XL for my Tyranids, and it's still a struggle to move an army if there's a lot of monstrous creatures. You end up with easily half the space taken by just trays for large monstrous creatures. The saving grace is their laser cut trays are super space efficient, so you don't need as many trays for non-monstrous creatures. Still, I cut it really fine, and don't have a tray still for my Tyrannofex or Flyrant.

A lot of people like that the BF bags have a bit more rigid 'shell'.
Getting trays cut (or from their stock designs) is a valid concern... But similar issues occur with pluck foam as you can only change them so much. You can always replace augment trays, same as with Sabol, etc. Custom cut trays seem to work best for situations where you have a relatively solid configuration. For example, I have a couple Dystopian Wars trays on order that I designed with cutouts for all the DW stuff i own as well as a little bit of expansion.
I do like Sabol's snap-together design.

I've been using a Sabol Army Transport since I started the hobby 6-7 years ago and I've had zero problems with it. I suppose if someone sat on it or punted it across the room, I'd be looking at some broken figures but, really, it's not that hard to not treat a figure case like a football. Heck, I even will leave mine sitting in the living room. I have cats. Cats are great at standing, sitting, scratching, and fighting on things that you really would rather they don't. Like figure cases. My case is fine after several years of infrequent use as cat furniture.
I've never tried Battlefoam, although I hear it's nice. I just can't bring myself to give the guy any of my money after reading some cocky post of his back when Space Hulk was released. Go Sabol, go KR (which I just started experimenting with and like so far), but screw Battlefoam.

I use Portable Warfare's bag with Blu pluck foam. Works well and I haven't had any issues.
I'm holding onto a friends 1520 bag from BF... its just awesome and holds a metric crapton of models. Extremely sturdy and the material its made from is very durable.
The next bag I purchase will definitely be BF bag.
My two cents.

I've owned both over the last 10 years. Sabol is fine for smaller armies, armies without a lot of vehicles, and for models that are not horribly fiddly.
Battlefoam is tremendously expensive, but I can put a Mech IG army with vendettas in a1520, something that Sabol simply does not offer.
My recommendation: buy sabol if you play skirmish games, or elite foot armies. For nearly anything else, Battlefoam is simply the best.
And yes, a battlefoam bag is pricy, as are the trays. No doubt. But it's a system that makes storing and moving armies simple, convenient and safe. At this point, the only 40k I own still in Sabol is a Space Marine army I'm selling on ebay.

Even the comparable Sabol sizes still cost less. In those comparisons, the real difference is in Battlefoam's hard lining for their cases (and even Sabol's Armored Company case comes with hard plastic walls).

I have 2 Battlefoam PACK AIR bags and I love them. I can't see a situation where I would buy anything other than a Battlefoam bag at this point.
I have used several Sabol bags and dislike them greatly. I used to use GW cases a lot as well and hate them too. I don't personally like the way the TableWar stuff looks and transports but that is just personal taste ymmv.
I have seen Dave Fay's solution in person and I can vouch that is works excellently and looks very nice and neat. It is certainly a good option if you are willing to put in a bit of work on your own end.

I'm coming down on the side of KR Multicase. I have some battlefoam and find it stiff and ridged and it wears on my models and applies weird pressures to them. My sabols suck. I hate sabol. It has both too much and too little give, pluck foam is awful. Kr with the nice card boxes, wonderful soft foam and aluminum cases are the bomb.

Portable Warfare is what I use, and I like it quite a bit. I play Warmachine, so the armies are a little smaller. I don't feel that I necessarily need my entire collection when I'm up at the FLGS, so a few lists' worth of models are all I really need to bring with me. I also treat my bag carefully, so the soft sides aren't really a problem for me.
While I might pick up a Battlefoam bag eventually, right now that money could be far better spent on other things.

I didn't see one that could hold over 20" of foam, let alone 8" deep trays for Tyranid MCs and VC monsters/mounts (I prefer to stand them than lay them down whenever possible, since that puts odd pressure on areas not meant to be pressured). From browsing their website, I managed to find out that the cardboard cases are about 4" deep (so not deep enough) and the biggest case, the wheeled aluminum case, holds 4, which isn't nearly enough for either army. Unless I'm reading their wbesite wrong, which is likely.

yeah, I've done a BattleFoam review and really like the product. Pack 432 review I find the quality amazing and transporting minis in them is a joy. Battle foam have the best custom tray editor, which makes kitting out a bag for an awkward army very easy. The bag quality is the best I've seen on the market. You can spot BattleFoam it's very distinctive. Strong, Quality, Functional and Stylish. With all these companies you can buy collections of foam customised to each of your armies. Because you don't need lots of bags, your foam collection will out grow your expensive bag(s) You then just select which army your bringing and fetch those trays and swap them into your bag. I've got stacks of Battlefoam trays which are piled up on shelves. ... Naked Foam on shelves! That's where KR system has the advantage since the card board case is both cheap and intergral to the system. There is no need to have foam sitting on shelves it can all stay in boxes. I've seen ArbitorIans KR collection and it's a very tidy storage system. He has stacks of KR cases, I think tidy stacked rows and columns archival boxes look great. He just picks up one or two boxes pops them into a KR bag and hes ready to transport which ever army he's using. ... NecronLord3 wrote: I own 5 Sabol bags and aside from the 4 Monoliths and 1 Ark of my 10,000+ points of Necrons everything is fit into 1 Army transport II, 1 Platoon, and a Motorpool Bag ... I doubt anyone could fit the same models into as few battlefoam bags. j/k... I don't have that much necrons (yet...) Battlefoam/KR/sabol are all just space and it's how you use the space given the options/tool each comapny provides. Even GW cases are just a space, and we cut chunks out of trays to get more functional space out of the case. In my opinion Battlefoam provide the most options and the best tools Battlefoam have the best custom tray generator so if you put the time in you can squeeze every last bit of space out of their bag. Check out these two awkward armies of mine. I spent the time and put thought into the custom trays I bought and I can get both these armies Into a single 432 bag (not at the same time!). Panic... Lots of edits.. because I love editting

What's their case comparable to a 1520XL? Because I was looking for a KR case that could hold my Tyranid and Vampire Counts armies back when I got my 1520. Apologies - I don't know my Battlefoam product codes - they don't do anything that will hold that much foam.
The most similar KR case setup to Battlefoam is card cases inside Kaiser carry bags (which are hard lined). However, the biggest Kaiser bag only hold 4 cases, as you pointed out. Though many of their aluminium cases hold more than 4" trays, they don't make trays taller than 4" so that's a moot point! It sounds like, for your specific requirements (mainly because you want to store tall models upright) Battlefoam is the only option.
Of course, the KR system is designed a bit differently - why would you want to drag all your Vampire Counts to every Tyranid game you play? I have 8 armies, but I only use one at a time, so they are stored in card cases, and I only need a single Kaiser bag big enough to carry one army-worth of card cases. No model/tray/foam swapping required.
Even using Battlefoam, surely it would be better to get two smaller cases?

I have 2 battlefoam cases, the pack 1520 and the smaller 720. I use the smaller for my more compact armies, the bigger for apocalypse or armies like Eldar with tall vehicles.
I prefer BF because of the rigid foam and the fact that if I have a model without a precut tray and can just have one made (like for my Foregworld Avenger Strike Fighter) and it will basically fit perfectly.

You misunderstand me. Each of those armies will fill the 1520XL by themselves! My Tyranids have a tray that holds two upright Trygons and 3 upright Carnifexes, and I'm getting another that holds 2 upright Tyrannofex/Tervigons and my Flyrant (admittedly this will ne laying down to reduce stress on its leg). Those two trays come to over 12" themselves. Then a mixture of 1.5" gant trays and 2" - 3" trays for mid sized Tyranids and Gargoyles. For Vampire Counts, a 4" tray for cavalry and Corpse Carts, an 8" tray for a Terrorgeist and Coven Throne, then mixed 1" , 1.5" and 3" trays for infantry and mixed size smaller units.
KR simply does not have the solutions I needed - and I can't imagine Tyranid players, or anyone with 8th edition Fantasy armies using the big kits and lots of infantry, getting by with only 1 KR case. It's just not going to happen.

Just a little revive on this subject before I created something similar...
I've been out of the hobby for about 10 years and many of my mini's sat wrapped in movers paper, in homemade cases made out of rifle cases, or between egg foam in rubber maid containers. It is now time to upgrade that I have a stable job and looking to get these ready for the table top again. I was down to the two most popular choices KR and BF before finding this post and now I have more options. I am looking for foam/storage for:
1) 400 Steel Legion, about 100 of which are heavy weapons teams - all of the vehicles are in the modified rifle cases so until I start gaming somwhere it is awkward to carry such a case they will be fine there, but will eventually need to move 24 chimeras and 15 russes
2) 100 deathwing termi's currently no knights so that number will also go up
3) 36 ravenwing bikes, 6 attack bikes, 6 3rd edition metal speeders, 6 typhoons, Sammael on both bike and speeder, and I will probably add 2 or 3 fighters and maybe some of the heavy speeders but that's a ways off
4) Greenwing, about a company worth with some support vehicles
5) Necrons, DE, Tau, Nids can wait they are mostly here just to lend to friends to play anyway
Priority to the top three... I would appreciate opinions specific to:
1) storage - from the reading it sounds like the KR boxes make storing easier. I have limited basement space, but it does get a little moist in the summer if there is a lot of rain - even with the dehumidifier.
2) cost, I haven't heard back from KR customer support and the guy from BF said to keep buying until it all fits. I didn't like either answer so came here for more info.
3) model position/protection - it looks like most models lay down, I am spending a lot of time and in some cases money getting these to table top standard and above. I don't want them to break, scratch, chip if at all possible - i know they are toys and things will happen
4) uniformity is kinda big for me... a little OCD but also like easy interchange... I like hearing the KR method of grab and go, but it is similar for BF trays in and out of bags. really a toss up.
Thanks for collective knowledge, comments please

I just want to point out that people used Sabol cases for what... 10 years befor battlefoam came around? Thats saying something. The cases are just as good IMO. If you need the sturdier walls because you throw the bags around like a child... then go with BF. I have no problems with the pluck foam and Sabol cases. Protected my stuff for years and never had a broken model. You will save some money with Sabol cases, you just have to...not toss your army out of the car on the way home from a tournement you did poor in.
PS - Some of the BF trays will fit in the Sabol cases. IE the 5 drop pod tray. I know from exp.
I bought a Sabol case for my Nids... Absolutely terrible, unless you get the precut Nid trays. The spindly bits on the bugs get caught on bloody everything in those pluck trays, and theres really no neat way to pop them out to fit good numbers of nids per tray.
Battlefoams semi rigid foam is literally the best for Tyranids. You'll need to give your models a little wiggle room otherwise the foam can and will rub unsealed paint off models, but it really works better for spikes and other spindly little bits. No spikes catch on foam, because the foam isn't hugging the models. Add to that Battlefoams ability to have much deeper trays due to deeper cases than others, and you can very nicely store things like Tervigons, Flyrants and other tall models standing up, not needing to lay them down potentially putting weight on a part not intended to be load bearing.

Yeah, KR is probably going to be your friend with how much stuff you've got - not to mention how much cheaper it'll be to use KR than Battlefoam with so many models.
(I was looking at £200-250 to case everything from KR, around £4-600 from Battlefoam.)
But I've decided to go an alternate route and make my own (I'm big on time, short on money atm).
There's a local place that sells foam, where I've got 1" wide, 1/4" thick foam strip, and 1/4" thick foam base sheets, and I'm gluing it together myself.
There's also larger strip for 40mm bases, 2", 3" and 6" deep blocks for bigger things and vehicles that I'll be carving out. (I bought a pair of carry cases from a local store that'll hold 10" of 9"x12.6" foam), and I'll probably make cardboard trays to sit it all in for switching in and out.
And it'll cost me £50-60 in foam to encase the lot. (roughly £1-2 a tray!)
So if you don't mind taking the extra time to make it yourself - there's that option

Weirdly, as I'm usually a KR supporter, I think the armies you have are maybe too big for KR to be a satisfying solution. The KR system is built around a standard size card case, and bags/aluminium cases which hold multiple card cases. If your whole army takes up one or two card cases, that's fine, but when your army takes up five or six card cases, that becomes a lot of messing around. Of course, you're still better for storage with KR, and it's MUCH cheaper than the others, so I guess it depends how often you get the whole army out to play!
For example, a KR case will hold 8 Russes or Chimeras, or maybe 40 Heavy Weapon Teams, or around 200 Steel Legion troopers (my estimates). So, you're looking at maybe 8 card cases for the whole army. To be fair, I don't think even the massive Battlefoam case will hold all that, but it'll be less hassle than 8 separate boxes...
For the Deathwing, you're looking at 2-3 card boxes depending on if they're metal or plastic models (I can fit 60 metal Terminators in a box, but the plastic ones are a tad bigger)

Actually, KR has bags which fit 1-4 of their standard cardboard cases and a trolley which fits 6; it's not as if BF has anything that will fit substantially more than that (and honestly - would you *want* to?).
I agree with -Loki- on BF for 'Nids - but only for them. the rest of which you mention is, IMO, better off in KR trays.
Get KR for everything except 'Nids, and BF just for those.
Hell, it's not as if you're going to mix trays with guard and nids in one case anyway, so it helps diversifying here.
**experience level: have a pile of KR stuff, some BF. Will admit to not being much of a fan of the rigid BF foam in most cases, though. that might color judgement a bit although I'm sure you'll be off cheaper and more flexible/convenient with KR for your guard and DA even if you do like BF foam.

Thank you everyone... it is hard to get a solid cost estimate online since it is comparing apples to oranges. trying to find which is better is really subjective. Does KR have a 60mm base option somewhere? In the IG section they have a half tray that holds 6, but looks like pluck foam... as of last count - 60 heavy weapon teams need homes.

(Note, this is just me looking at the website, not personal experience)
Looking at the custom IG foam section of the KR website, there are a few options. It's 8, not 6, in a half wide, and you can get them in 1/3 or 1/2 hight. So a full KRU for nothing but heavy teams would hold either 48 or 32 bases worth (depending on how tall they are) So a box and a half or two boxes worth of space. Not unreasonable considering the size of your army.
