oh, I do that too... wine corks are great for smaller bits like heads and arms

This is a great thread!

As the Bay Area Open gets closer I feel the Time crunch.

Finished cleaning 60 ork slugga's and shaving off Ork Skulls.
I now have a baggy of 200 disembodied ork limbs...



Power drilled the Barrels, saves the wrist.



I also drilled the bottoms and inserted toothpicks for ease of airbrushing. When I did this with the ork choppa's I was temped to leave them that way.



I tend to weather weapons and guns to where they almost look black so this time around I decided to save some time and use a spray can of silver I had laying around and rely on washes and pigments to tone them down.



Finished cleaning pack packs and primed.

I made sure that I had 5 different styles. I plan on identifying squads this way.




Time for some bald and angry heads.

Stole some coffee stirrers from Starbucks and I glue the heads spaced evenly apart. I used zip kicker so the glue is brittle. Next time around I'll probably just use a hot glue gun.

Primed white since I ran out of grey primer.



I'm borrowing buypainted's method ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODqCZEzfdl4) for airbrushing heads but using the Minitaire paints.

Here's my recipe.



I started with a black base coat then hit the heads at 45 degree's with humanoid flesh. I was please with the coverage. I did get alot of dry tip and had to blast it out every 3-4 min but it handled well right after.



Then I hit the heads with Fairytale flesh at 15 degrees focusing on the top of the head, nose, cheeks and eyebrows.

The above projects took about 8 hours. Most of it was spent cleaning and prepping. Airbrushing the heads after they were prepped took 3 hours.

I'm almost at the point where I can start painting details...

I really dig the mass production. I need this ability.

GIVE THEM BEARDS

I tweeked my back earlier in the week so my progress slowed down a bit. Was put on some antiflamitories, Vicodin and flexeral.


Tried some different ghost tints on the BFG's to get some color variation. Here is blood and Blue. It's a cool effect but not what I was going for. So I ended up repainting them the silver.



Started to use Vallejo Liquid Gold. Nice stuff, have to be careful with viscosity as it's alcohol based it dries out. I love the luster and goes on nicely.



Here is where I forgot it was alcohol based and cleaned it off in my paint pallet.



Went in and detailed the heads. Being on Vicodin and reflexal makes painting eye's very difficult. I may have to redo them. I'm content with the the contrasts on the flesh.



I wanted to test fit and complete a heavy weapon marine. This took another hour to complete with the washes, oil washed, clean up and matte varnish. Can't wait to have the 50 done.



Knocked out the Angry Faces, used a .3 mm sketch pen, drawing on a gloss varnish proved slippery so I wasn't very consistent with the faces. Some ended up more gestural on some but I was fine with the variations. Give each one some "Character".



The above projects took about 5 hours.

Base coat was silver from a spray can. The wash was nuln oil The trick is in the application. I mop it heavy then subtract the excess to avoid the pooling look on the flat surfaces.

interesting. so it's just a matter of directed application? I'm surprised that's it. the recesses look so dark, I figured those had been hit with an oil wash as well.

It's awesome to see how quickly you're getting this army together. Being a fan of the Angry Marines, I'm glad to see that someone's tackling them again.

To take a break from the tediousness of painting joints I went ahead and put a squad together.

For Squad identification in tournaments I'll be using the same head, backpack and weapons.

When on display I'll mix and match.



Started some base work.

I plan on using cork jagged terrain with snow and army painter grass tufts for accents.

To recreate the bases.

1. Hot glue asymmetric pieces of cork, make sure to puck and rough up the top edges to give variation. If they are all uniform it looks funny.

2. Prime black, make sure to get the underside.

3. drybrush 80% with adeptus battle grey.

4. drybrush the edges with astronomicon grey.

5. water based pigment wash with burnt sienna.

6. using a dry brush, dust of some of the areas where there is to much pigment.

7. Matte varnish with testors dullcote.

8. After I pin the models in I'll add some melted snow and sporadic tufts of arctic grass.





You can see the pigment wash starting to dry on the right bases with the rest are drying.



After everything is dry, I'm pleased with the effects.




The bases and 1 squad took 12 hours.

The squad took 6 to glue, oil wash, paint the weapons, and clean up.

I have 4 squads left to go and still have to create a Coteaz and crowe.

With 4 days left to the BAO I might be bring the templars....

Estimate about 30+ hours left of painting, with a busy job and 2 year old I don't see that working out.

I'll do my best, who needs sleep?

Amazing progress since I was last here. This is shaping up very nicely and is the best looking Angry Marines I've seen in a long time. Your 'production line' approach is highly effective, and I'm going to use a few of your techniques for my own work.

So I barely finished in time for the BAO, in fact i was still painting till 2 a.m. the night before the event.

I finished edging all the shoulder pads.


Started work on counts as Coteaz

only criticism is how theres little to no identifying feature throughout ur army as a whole, maybe if you add more forces to it then the thing be as noticeable but right now its lacking a bit of variety
