I was at out local gaming store on 40k night looking for a quick pick up game and after asking around I found a guy to play with....he was paralyzed from the waste down and struggled a little with his upper body movements. First im gonna say im not against anybody thats like that, I applaud him for still coming out and playing. Back on topic, we decided to play a 1k game because we both had to leave in a few hours. I played my deathwing and him his gray knights. After a few turns I had taken two of the objectives and killed his warlord only loosing two or three terminators from each of my three squads. To make a long story short I ended up tabling the guy, I normally get that triumphant feeling after that but this time I just felt like a git. By no means was he a bad player and was a great sportsman about it, his list for 1k was quite a power list too. After he left I was talking to some of the other guys at the shop and they asked me how my game went and I told them I tabled the guy and one looked at me and went "dude, he was in a wheel chair and you tabled him"
So that might have been my most awkward game ive played in, whats yours?
also ive seen during a tournament a 15 year old kid play a 12 year old and make the 12 year old cry.....at a toys for tots tournament.

Hey, if the guy is in there playing im going to assume he does not want your pity, and judging that he was a competent player he came to win on his own merritt. In my experience working with the physically disabled they would rather be treated the same as anyone else and not any extra considerations because of their handicap (with some minor considerations for mobility). Purposely losing a game or going soft on someone with a disability would further give light to their disability and not let them do what they came to do, play and feel just like the rest of us.
As for uncomfortable games of an opposite yet similar vein, i did purposely lose a few times to a player who had a bit of a anger problem and i was more tired of his antics than anything else, but i craved playing no matter what. Granted it was a poor decision on my part but in the end i got to play and he got to act like a jerk and make himself feel better, and as for me, knowing i would have whooped his punk behind was enough.

My most awkward game was in 4th edition. Me vs. Tau.
It was a rather small point game (like 750 or 1000, I can't remember). He had a few broadsides, minimum-sized firewarrior squads, and the rest was all jet-pack suits. Terrain was set up in such a way where there was a wall for him to hide basically all of his army out of LOS behind.
I didn't happen to bring my basilisk in that game (the only real barrage weapon for guard at the time). I knew that if I deployed my stuff up in line of sight, he would just MSM me with missile pods and take long-range pot-shots with his railguns.
Put another way, there was literally nothing that I could do to my opponent, as my opponent made it so that he could attack my stuff without me being able to target a single unit in his army.
Rather than just stupidly get killed in a cross-board charge for no real gain, I decided to wait it out, out of LOS myself.
Turn 1: He MSMed. There were no targets. When it was my turn, he had MSMed everything out of LOS, so even if I had moved up to do anything, they wouldn't have had targets.
Turn 2: He MSMed. I stayed put.
Turn 3: He MSMed. I stayed put
Turn 4: He MSMed. I stayed put.
Turn 5: He MSMed. I stayed put.
Turn 6: He had spent the whole game carefully sneaking his broadsides around out of the range of my weapons (well, and out of LOS, of course). He just barely managed to make it to see the big toe of one of my sentinels, which he blew up with a railgun. In return, I try to attack his Sv2+/5++ suits, and don't manage to kill the squad.
The game ended.
The game took longer to set up than it did to play. My opponent won on victory points 50 to 0. It was so bad that I didn't even bother to write a battle report about it.

Ok this may be hard to believe but my first real game in 5th was the starter game at the GW store (long story short I started in 4th but my parents are separated so I game with my dad; this was with my mom) and lost. Mind you I was about 12 at the time, maybe a little younger and had yet to start my own army (borrowed my fathers-he has every single one) so I picked the good old boys in blue, got a little wonky and lo and behold my dread was ripped asunder by a power klaw, my marine squad shot up with rokkets, the termies died to a hail of fire combined with some bad cc saves. The dice gods were not happy (I got a LOT of 1's and 2's) and to make up for it I sacrificed a dozen dice in their name when I got home. The redshirt didn't know what to say but I was not disheartened, and proceeded to buy not only the SM codex but a battleforce and an AOBR box set from the guy, who looked rather surprised.

I once, pretty soon after getting interested in 40k, set up a tiny demo game so my friend could try it. Long story short, he eventually got addicted, got huge amount of orks and we've been great opponents ever since, but the game was awkward because he won. Now, granted, I hadn't actually played any games, but I had studied, and I was doing the demo game. After he won he said it was nice that I had let him win. I had to live with the shame and awkwardness of knowing I didn't xD

My inner commasar would have kicked in at that point and by turn 4 it would be FORWARD YOU DOGS! FOR THE EMPEROR! I have seen games where its just one deathstar chasing another around the whole game and nothing gets done as you play roll dice and tie.
@generalchaos34
I fully understood that, people are people no matter what they stand/sit on. Ive also played against people who had some anger issues before and watched one kid almost push another though a glass case because his broadside fell off and almost broke.

My most akward game was in a tournament. My opponant basically didn't talk to me the entire time, and every time I tried to lighten the mood or make conversation he would basiclally just kind of stare blankly at me and not really say much. The unfortunate part is that it would have been a really great game had he been more interactive. It ended up being really close, and there was never really a clear leader until the very end.

There is a guy at our FLGS who has cochlear implants. His speech can be hard to understand and he generally has a hard time with what you say as well. That being said I always accept games when he is looking to play and he usually puts up a good fight, but I am a little more lenient with rules because trying to have an in depth discussion would be awkward for everyone.

I got put against a 12 year girl at a Tournament and it was her 1st time with 40k. Her parents were in the tournament and she wanted to play. 1st round was random then after highest points vs highest points. I am one of the better players if there is any doubt about how this was going to go......
on top of that I am 35 and if I wanted to play vs that age group I'd go play Pokemon. I quit playing magic at one store b/c all the players were 14 and under.
...... Anyway she got absolutely slaughtered. She lost interest and quit before the end. Now I look like the bad guy. Well I left with 1st place which was $90.00. she really assured -- it just didn't seem right.
I would rather play someone on my level than just go thru the motions of taking turns to just roll over someone. It also makes it not fair for other people at the Tournament on top of that.

Played a 3vs3 1500 points a piece. Setup the board, then first turn one of the players on the other side leave to go hang out somewhere else in the store. While leaving he told one of his allies to play his army for him. Then every once in a while he would come back and see how the match was going. One of the allies came back and told us the guy who left said he didn't want to play with douchebags. At that point it was awkward because he just left again. Ended up just all of us quitting turn 3 and packed up. Really? If you didn't want to play the "douchebags" why start the game anyway with us? Turns out he just doesn't like playing teams, which my group likes. This was last Thursday. Really ruined the game night for us. Know better next time. We have had problems with him before. Just all tried taking the high road and be nice.

Most awkward game ever..hmmm
Had to be when I was playing my Tau against a fellow at a FLGS, and his girlfriend was watching and giving moral support, she was kinda easy on the eyes and obviously did not really want to be there, but as the game went along I kept noticing her looking my way, and standing on my side of the table a lot.
She also was making unfavorable comparisons between our models, being pretty harsh on her BF's painted minis, and laughing when he was taking a beating. I actually felt bad for the fellow, even made it a point to compliment some of his better conversions and models, and disagree with his girlfriends opinions of them.
Really uncomfortable, and the guy even won the game, and his girl told him he got lucky!
And to add insult to injury a few minutes after he left, she came back in to "buy some dice" and offered me her phone number, seriously awkward game.

You weren't playing basketball. The only way this could sound bad (and this is s stretch) is if he made different tactical decisions because he couldn't reach the center of the table.
They're all military, but anyone disabled I've ever met wants to be treated exactly like that, not different because of their issue.

Yeah sorry I am taking the cash.
I personally think the parents should run games w/ her and not enter her in a prize tourn. where there will be no mercy. I could havetold you ahead of time how that was going to turn out. She couldn't even beat some of the newer less skilled players. She didn't even know how far units move.
I really blame the parents. I see bad decisions all the time and think WTFudge.
A girl at work is watching previews for Abe Lincoln Vampire hunter and asks if Abe really was a Vampire hunter. I was so shocked or I would have told her of course but someone said no before I could recover.

Back on topic the only awkward games i see regularly are when 2 people cant agree on a rule and arent happy with a roll off. Tends to ruin the rest of the game

Yeah I would have called her. Wouldn't have been awkward at all. She isn't going to stay with him -- if he can't have her I might as well how often is there a strong mutual attraction? I dated several of my friends girlfriends. I got permission 1st of course. Do you really want to be with someone who wants to go? I welcome any of my friends to to take my girlfriend. I'd rather know now than 10 years down the road w/ 3 kids.
I bet you called her.

This wasn't a game I played, but watched. A couple weeks at my FLGS the owner was playing a game with a player in a annihilation game between the owner's Space Wolves and the other guy's Blood Angels. Long story short, the BA player's Mephiston was wrecking the owner's SWs without remorse and they were both new to 6th Edition rules. Every now and then they would look into the BRB to see what they had to do for certain parts. The owner and player would ask me, as I was watching and that the owner knew I played IG and knew most of the 6th edition rules, about certain things. For the most part, I was correct about the rules that they asked me about except where I made a big mistake regarding the Character Challenges. I knew how the challenges worked in that the two characters would face each other in single combat without any interference from the other models in the fight. What I failed to remember was that while the challenge was happening the fighting from the rest of the models still go on. So when I told them how the challenge system works I left that out by mistake.
So while the two ICs from each side were duking it out with each other, the rest of the units just kinda sat back watching the fight. Because I left the part of the unit continuing the fight out by mistake the owner's SWs almost got wiped out by the BA army until the last second where the SWs pulled a last minute victory by wiping the other army out with some great dice rolling. It wasn't until after the game that we looked up the challenge system and realized my mistake that almost cost him the victory, but the owner just laughed it off and said he had a fun game because of how close it was.
I still feel awkward and bad about it even now.

Not to certain if I like the term mythical attached to my statements, sounds a little to close to being called a liar.
And why it was awkward is the setting, I just never mixed women and gaming before, and found it very off putting, so it was awkward for me, if it was at a nightclub, or concert or bar then no biggie, but in a game store, it felt strange.
the store itself had a huge selection of hobby items though, everything from RC stuff, to scrapbooking supplies, there was always ladies strolling around in there, sometimes EVEN in the game sections, just never used it for a "hookup" spot.

This gets progressively worse, with slurred speech, twitches, and lapses in judgement, until he has his seizure. I have, on occasion, found myself thrashing him only to realize that he's in a pre-seizure haze and I've essentially been whooping up on someone who's only at half-capacity. No big deal, of course, unless we're in a tournament, and then I have to decide whether or not to take the guaranteed win or ask the TO for a draw.
I've run into a guy before a tournament once, back in fifth edition, and we were sitting around comparing which armies were in attendance. Anyhow, he goes "Yeah, there's a lot of Marines of course. Some dumbass even brought Drop Pods. I don't know what the hell he was even thinking." Of course, I was the Drop Pod player, and of course we wound up playing each other. To make matters more teeth-grindingly frustrating, he beat me, and I came in next to last.

I was visting my aunt in London and it was both my very first time in UK and playing outside of Poland . My aunt drove me to Warhammer world and at first it was awesome , all those people playing , so many awesome models and terrain . We don't have as much stuff here to play with . I found an opponent ,he was like two , maybe three times my age. I told him I would like to play and he said ok , asked what I play . I play IG and had my two cases of models with me which was my 1750 army , he asked me If he can see my models and I had no problems with that. What happened after that was the worse game of my life . He took me to a table with no terrain other then some hill .And deployed his army. 3 units of elite hvy bolter devastators , 6x5 man hvy bolter tacticals , 3 whirlwinds and 9 hvy bolter and assault cannon land speeders . The game ended in 2 turn and he of course started . I have never before played against a tailored army , so it was a bit of a shock to me that people do that kind of a stuff . But the worse of it was that marine guy was laughing the whole 20 min of rolling dice and telling his 30 plus year old friends how is owning me and his friend asked me , If I want to play against his eldar . I said ok , the fool that I was back then, and the first thing he put on the same table was 9 scater laser war walkers . Same thing happened again , he gets first turn his army is made out of guardian squads with scater platforms and warwalkers and twin cannon vypers . After that I just packed my things , ignored the third guy asking me If I want to play his chaos and called my aunt to pick me up .
Worse and strangest day of gaming in my life.

Dude, that's not awkward, that's a win!
