Depends on what points cost you're looking at. Given the cost of a Strike Cruiser, however, you probably won't be able to just get one.
- Battle Barge
- Strike Cruiser x3
- Nova Class Frigate (Blister x1)
Should be more than enough to bring you up to 1000.
Alternatively, try:
- Strike Cruiser x6
- Nova Class Frigate (Blister x1)
If you really don't want to use big ships. And that is if you want to stick to a plain Codex Astartes Fleet. I feel it would be better to get some Plastic Imperial Cruisers to round out the force and play the Armageddon Fleet.
The points and list building are relatively simple for the SM, with only two capital ship types (Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges), it shouldn't be that hard. Go to the Resources section of the BFG page and download the rules. They're free. Lastly, I see you are in Australia, from your profile, and that'll mean "good news" for you - everything's still available down under I think.
Good hunting pax_imperialis.

Generally a Battle Barge, 2-3 Strike Cruisers and a single blister of each of the escorts should give you a solid 1500pt fleet. If I remember point costs at all well....

Indeed, one Battle Barge, three Strike Cruisers and one of each Escort blister would put you at:
- Battle Barge
- 3x Strike Cruisers
- 3x Nova,
- 4x Hunter,
- 4x Gladius
1350 points
Add to that your compulsory Fleet Commander, Terminator Boarding Party and Two Re-rolls, and you are 1500 exactly.

Maybe somebody got a little over-eager removing them. They're definitely screwy. If you go to the BFG resources (or maybe it's Epic) you get 6-7 links to Great Gift Ideas.

With that sort of rarity on older items its surprising there aren't more recasts being done. Personally I haven't got much of an issue about buying recasts of OOP figures especially when GW didn't give you a fair chance to but them. Some of the specialist games stuff was available for such a limited period it's a wonder they even bothered producing it. See the Inquisitor genestealer or imperium civilians.
Simply, GW encouraged people to buy these games and didn't support them. Many specialist games figures were removed long before this final purge. My only issue in recasting in this regard is that passing them off as originals is deceitful to get the collectors 'value', but offered the chance to get a good enough copy for a reasonable price I would, as would many others. If some BFG stuff is selling for hundreds of pounds, then it's a situation GW created that prevents people getting the models they need to play the game they bought. They're all old models that don't fit GW's games anyway, spaceships and 54mm figures, it's not hurting them to recast that I can see, now they've disposed of these ranges.

Actually, recasting without permission is prima facie still copyright (or in the UK, likely design) infringement.
Regardless of whether they make it available or not. The rights to the copyright/design still belong to GW, and that means they have the right to NOT produce any or to stop anyone from producing it.
Nevertheless, it would be quite possible for a licensed caster to come about. An offshoot that buys GW's old, unused moulds perhaps. But the economic viability thereof would be up for debate.

I do wonder if recasting for personal use would be defensible as fair use in the US (you can create backups of most things without issue, can't see why you couldn't backup your physical goods too.) That might be starting to veer a bit off topic though.

So yesterday, Kal Jerico was no longer available on the UK site. Day before that Cawdor Gangs became unavailable. We planned to run a campaign with Kal leading the Wildcats against the Redemption............
Good News, on the 2nd I placed an order for my Cawdor Gangs, Escher Gangs, Kal Jerico, and the Redeemer.
Bad News, today I recieve an email to tell me Kal is now discontinued, have a refund. Unfortunately this really mucks up the campaign as I've no opposing Character for the Redeemer, and probably wouldn't have gone for an Escher gang without Kal.
I've emailed my displeasure. Why does it take 6 days to remove something from the site as being in stock? More like the staff have pilaged them!!!

Dangit, upon further inspection it seems that my Battle Barge is missing a piece. Time to phone Games Workshop. I just hope they have the piece to replace it. Update: So yeah, they gave me three wings instead of two wings and the square piece that goes underneath the head of the ship. I called up GW and they're not sure they'll be able to send a replacement because it's OOP and they still have to fulfill other orders of it before they can replace mine. I think that's kind of BS that I ordered before other people, got a model with missing parts, and now my chance of getting a replacement is entirely dependent on if there's one left over from the other people that ordered after me. Oh well, it's not that difficult to fix, just a bit of plasticard and some detailing and it should be good. Regardless, they said if they can't replace it they'll refund me for it. So that's good, at least.
