Yeah. Pretty much agree that the new SM stuff was "neat" not "need." Congrats on getting off the floor!

Nice battle report and interesting roadmap to finish your company, good luck with that!
From the reveals I definitely need the Bladeguard Box. I love that model wiping his sword with the enemies flag Rest looked nice but luckily not "OMG I want that immediately nice" which my wallet seemed quite happy about.

Sometimes it’s odd how one bit will trigger a desire for a kit. I remember when the plastic sternguard box came out, with the one resting his hand on the pommel of the sword on his belt. Needed that kit, largely for that one part. Although it was just a highlight for a kit full of awesome.

One problem with having such a large range with a huge number of things that all do mostly the same job is that it’s hard to get excited for units to fill a battlefield role. Nothing there screams “I need this to make my army work”. It’s just offering alternatives and filling in niche bits.

So I’m willing to wait for pretty much everything. That said, my release day order is probably going to be something like the codex, a box of regular intercessors, and a box of assault intercessors. We’ll see what shows up when on the amazon sellers. Although I’m out of gift cards at the moment, so might forgo the discount to support my FLGS.

The things I’m hot for from a modeling POV are the stuff leaked earlier but not in this last round. Primaris techmarine, chaplain on bike, tank. Depending on how the codex fills out, I might take up some other projects as well. For example, I’ve been having fun with the Vet intercessors in my crusade games. Might be worth actually modeling up some un UM colors with the correct trim and shoulderpads. Although I do enjoy getting the Deathwatch boys out on the field.

Some paint:

Pretty much done with sloppy basecoats. Need a little bit of targeted basecoats, but I was using the big brush. And second+ coats on a lot of things. Like the reds. Plus all the washes, highlights, gems, etc. Plugging along.

Quick WIP. Second pass on the reds. Even for a base paint, it still covers for crap. Base of grey seer down on the broodlord. We’ll see how fast he paints up. Had to re-glue him to his base. If he snaps off again, he gets a pin.

Nothing like contrast paints and my nids for progress. Broodlord needs a little cleanup pass, black wash for the reds, and eyes/teeth. Plus the normal basing stuff. But almost done.
Edit:

Gimmie a kiss!

While the little nids just want hugs and snacks, this guy needs a restraining order. HR has already talked to him about workplace harassment and consent. Do not be alone with him. Do not drink anything he hands you. And most importantly, do NOT make eye contact.

Still needs the base, but done with the paint. Only deviation from the normal pattern is he gets blue eyes (don’t look) and a little BftBG for the tongue (avoid).

Easy as grey seer base, blood angel red contrast, nulan oil shade.

I wouldn’t say I’m rocking the easy mode for these guys and getting good results, but I totally am. For getting a horde to the table, contrast paints are little bottled miracles.

Edit:
Rocks and tufts on.

I think they work a lot better on organics with muscles and chitin then they do on flat armor plates. Not that they are bad on armor, it’s just not what they are best at. Nids? It’s like they were designed for them.

Broodlord done and hiding in the back. I figure I’ll get formal shots of everyone who doesn’t already have then when I clear the shelf at the end of Dec.
A little early for a Q3 YTD, but the shelf is getting crowded. And 5 wraithguard should be joining that seer before month’s end.

Great looking Broodlord Nev and those Infiltrators you painted up with the camo scheme are particularly striking looking, not something I've seen too often!

Snow bases in general are not that common. And the armies that tend to favor them (Space Wolves being a big one) tend not to do much camo. So seeing arctic camo in 40k is quite rare. I’d guess you’d see more in historicals, where someone might be building a force that fought in a winter campaign.

I’m quite happy with the way it’s working out on my Ultras, especially the HQs, who I consider my best work of the year.

Some progress:

Put the washes down on the WG. Next step is the black pass to darken them down and clean up all the slop. After that will be gems and edges. Running low on month, 2/3rds of the way done.

I also moved the Pengine down to the large model handle. Not looking forward to painting it, but it needs to be done, especially if I want to finish the SoB box by the end of the year.

Those Wraithguard are coming along nicely, I like how the helmets are coming out.

As an aside with the winter camp, I saw a Ford Mustang with winter Camo yesterday . It was terrible . They could have used your touch for sure.

Broodlord came out great, Contrast was made for Nids, no one can tell otherwise.
And great pic of the painted shelf, nice work!

Camo on a mustang? Someone needs a lot of help...

Shelf might fill up before the year ends. I think it’s happened once before. We’ll see.

Progress. Black cleanup done, and most of the gems. Probably another layer of red to smooth things out. Then the edging. And the bases and if I decide to slap decals on them, which I’ll probably not bother with. The trick now is to keep momentum up. Edge highlighting is one of those things that keeps me away from the bench.

Also put the first black on the pengine.

Edit:
Finished the gems and the silver edges and put another red down. Not for all the grey. Stupid Eldar and all the little fiddly bits and bumps. At least I’m not crazy enough to do them all as gems.

It’s not often I do large swaths of flat gold. Normally just filigree and accents, or stuff with a lot of detail carved in. My brown wash over base technique gives a bit of a warm, worn look here. I think (or hope, whatever).

Did the grey on two last night and moved them over to be ready to based. 3 more. Plus all the finishing work, but that goes quick.

Brought down two termagants to take their spots. I’d like to get 500 points of nids done by the end of the year. Of course, I’d also like to finish the SoB box. But I wanted something quick and easy to help build motivation on the bench, so going to crank out some gribblies on the side to help boost my ego. Plus the paint more then I buy numbers are not good, and are likely to get worse before the year is over. I can easily see another two dozen minis hitting the pile, and that’s before the new SM codex drops. The bugs of course could add twice that number without blinking. OK, that’s a bit of a stretch. But I could casually add another box each of the little guys and a half to full dozen assorted med/large bugs.

Nevelon,

The Broodlord was very well done.

My two cents,

Thanks. While I might be a little self depreciating about table top standards and phoning it in with contrast paints, I do really enjoy the results I’m getting with the nids. It’s nice to know what I’m doing on the little guys scales up to the medium ones. The next step will be the Trygon, to see if it still looks OK on the big guys.

Two more little guys waiting to be based before joining the swarm. Waiting for them at the baseing station are the WG who I did.

Gaunt1: Does this seem like a fair match up to you?
Gaunt2: No. No it does not...

Don’t worry little guys, 2 more of your brethren have moved down for paint. Of course, I still have 3 more WG to finish.

First Grey Seer down on the gaunts. Depending how energetic I am, they might be done by the end of the day. But motivation is in the dumpster, so anything goes. Drybrushed the steel on the pengine, need to start picking out details.

Two more gaunts done and waiting to be based. 2 more down and basecoated. These guys have better guns. WG still waiting patiently. If I don’t get work done on them tonight, I took Monday off, so will finish them at that point. Can’t do edge work in the morning. Coffee is not kind on detail.

You need to do word ballons on the previous pic. One can really imagine your dialogue based on the position of those nids. Made me laugh

I’d have to figure out an easy way to do it, I’m sure there are programs that make it easy.

But seeing those little guys with they heads tilted towards each other chatting, faced off against the WG, I knew they had something to say.

Purple down on the next two.

Plus they are slow and only armed with axes. One side of this fight is the side with the guns! And have them outnumbered 4-2 at this point.

Of course, 12” guns are within charge range guns. Not going to be able to kite those big guys around long enough to whittle them down. Which would take roughly forever.

Love that force of old metal termies. Be quite a bit of weight there!

And you nailed the snow camo on the infiltrators. It's spot on.
I like the nids too! The red really works well with the dark/light combo on the skin/armour.

Thanks guys. As much as I love my classic blue Ultras, as a paint scheme, it got old a while ago. Nice to be able to branch out and paint different things. Camo and Nids are really good for that, Eldar are so-so.

Weren’t there just 2 of those little guys a moment ago?
I hear if you blink more show up.
We don’t have eyes anymore Bob...

So yah, that happened. Side project to get me to the bench worked, but I’ve not put a brush to the remaining WG. So partial win? I recognize they are a distraction and was going to pause on doing more, but these guys will bring me to a squad size of 8. Two more for a legal squad. So two more moved down to the paint bench and got their Grey Seer this morning. 8 more to do for if I feel I need to do this again. And at some point I need to grab another box each of the basic little gribblies. No rush, I can wait to see if they get a megaforce over the holidays. Next purchase is probably going to be some medium sized bugs, like zoenthropes or carnafexes. Once I finish these little guys, I’m at one HQ, 3 troops, and some HS picks. Need another HQ. I’d like to get paint on the Trygon before I pick up a flyrant. Getting the ‘fexes and painting one as OOE is probably the quicker path to a battalion.
