The chainswords in indominus were a little bigger than the old ones, but not by much. Will be interesting to see the size of the CC toys in the assault intercessor box when I get around to picking that up. Put the green down on the sisters. Next is the browns (leather, parchment) red (wax) and then the washes. Plus all the face and hair work. Edit: Done with basecoats. Except the bits I missed, like the krack grenades on two of the sisters.

I may give my painting handle another shot the near future too. It is rotting away (not literally) in my hobby box, because I couldn't get the hang of it. Feel more comfortable with my hand on the base, but didn't try it out for long.
Good to know the Seraphim will soon be ready to purge the heretic from far above.

They took me a little getting used to, but not that long. But I’m old and breaking down, so my hands could use the help. At the end of the day, do what you are most comfortable with. Handles aren’t one of those tools that help you paint better, but can be one that helps you paint more comfortably.
So some progress on the lovely ladies:
Put the brown wash down last night before bed. At the “tons of cleanup” stage, which hopefully I can power through this weekend.
Which is going to be an extra long one. Our “vacation” (slash sick time slash personal time slash emergency time slash PTO) can’t be cashed out or rolled over, so it’s use it or loose it at the end of the year. As most of my plans this year were scrubbed, I’ve got a few days to burn. So random time off with nothing to do but paint and putter. And about a dozen chores I should be doing and all my holiday baking.
Happy Hanukkah, (round 3, LIGHT!) go and indulge in something fried. Try to stay relaxed in this holiday season. It’s a mess, it’s going to be odd, and it’s not a good time for a lot of people. Focus on the silver linings, not the clouds. Be safe, be happy, purge the heretic.
--Nev Automatically Appended Next Post: So last week’s BatRep:
Mission is to get units off the other side’s table edge, and stop them from doing the same. Cover of darkness, so long range shooting is hampered. No deployment shenanigans.
He skews his deployment all on one side, I spread out more. With alternate deployment I figured out his plan (punch through in force on one flank) and stuck my long range vehicles on the flip side to make an end run there while providing cover fire for a few turns.
Round one his dice are cold. He kills an intercessor, maybe plinks a few wounds off a vehicle, not sure on that part. I advance my rhino midfield under the arch, and the pred/speeder up top. Captain jumps in, ties down some troops. Focus fire down his dread, other light fire. And nothing says “orbital strike” like a nice tight cluster of units, so I call one in.
Turn two he scatters to avoid the the worst of the strike, puts down my captain, and does a few casualties elsewhere. I unload my tacs, move the rhino to exfiltrate, nuke the crap out of him from orbit (only way to be sure) doing like a dozen MWs across his units, and melta/bolter the survivors. It’s ugly.
Here is turn 3.
We can see how this is going to go, and the rest of the game is pretty much playing for agenda points and kills. My support’s work is done, so the speeder and Pred leave, as well as the rhino. Tacs join them a turn later. My stopper force manages to hold out long enough to keep him on the table until the end, but pays for that time with blood.
Pretty crushing win for the Ultras, as I got a lot of stuff off the table, and you get 2x their PL in VP.
MVP again was the full melta tac squad. Those guys just get stuff done Of course marksmen honors for 2+ BS and easy access to re-rolls helps a LOT.

So slight divergence from my normal plan. I’ve taken the two helmeted sisters and pushed them further then the rest. They just got their white contrast paint, needing just the highlights and touch up pass, while the other sisters still need all their cleanup (and heads). The reason for this is that I want to free the space to start the canoness. I’d like to get her done before the year ends.
Also in the news, I picked up the ‘Nid box this weekend. I opened it and looked, grabbed the instructions out. But I’m not going to start on it until the sisters are done. Or Christmas morning. Or my willpower breaks down. But really, I’m going to finish off old projects before I tear into that one. Honest.
I’m filling it under “gift” for my paint more then I buy goal. Using funds from my birthday. I’m going to hold off until the new year to pick up anything else, and will probably wait until things show up on Amazon. But a Gladiator and box of Assault Intercessors will be the first things in the new year. Assuming I don’t get any as gifts, which is highly unlikely. The only person who might get me 40k models would be my son, and he should not be spending that much. Although there might be some hobby stuff under the tree. When my folks were asking if there was anything I wanted/needed, I mentioned some W&N S7s. We’ll see if I’ve been naughty or nice. My folks spend a lot on gifts for me, but there was a pretty long list of stuff I need, and my mom is really good about picking up subtle clues for gift ideas all year and remembering them come the holidays.

Nice bat rep and an interesting mission! It's always nice when the goal isn't just, kill the other dude's stuff before he kills yours.
Sisters are looking really great. Love the palette; it almost feels like the inside of a church has taken human form and is coming to kill the heretics. Good stuff!

I think that’s the best description of SoB I’ve heard.
I think that was the last new battle on that point scale in the crusade section. We were actually thinking of going back and doing some runs of smaller ones. With larger forces the out of action battle scars add up quick. With the lethality of the game, even when you win, you are making a lot of checks, and being tabled, or nearly so, is not that rare. We seem to be spending an inordenent amount of RP points removing scars. Might be worth adding a house rule, like light duty/repairs, ever battle you sit out you have a 5+ chance of removing a scar. Rotates the roster to keep things fresh, but lets you spend the RP to grow your army, and not keep patching up units.
Cleaned up the blacks on two sisters yesterday, and put the first base coat on the canoness. And a nid. Need to do the last of the holiday baking (a stollen for Christmas morning, which for me is this Sat with the boy) after that I’ve got nothing to do but hobby for the rest of the year. And work and other life maintenance stuff.
Speaking of which, time to log in. Have a great day all.

So a little bit of holiday supply drop. Part of my secret santa thing at work, I got a new palette so I can maybe get away from using old blister packs. And from my folks, some new brushes. I don’t generally ask for hobby stuff, but I just broke down this year. Little afraid of popping them open and getting to work. The Boy got me a gift card. He tried to pick out some minis, but everything was either backordered for a month, or temp out of stock online, and it’s not the best time to go out and hit the shops. No game this weekend, but did build some Legos.
Some paint:
Reg sisters need white edges, and a little work on the eyes/face/hair. Sarge still needs some touchups, and then contrast and the works. Canoness needs to decide if she’s getting a red cape/shawl or just keeping the basic black of the order. With gold detailing, of course. She is the boss lady. Nid is getting paint, just got the skin down.

More detail work on the sarge. Needs her eyes, and a little touch up on the white base, then the contrast white. First black on the canoness. new nid, the old one is waiting to be based.

The white sisters look great. Lovely finish you've achieved on the white. The only thing that jumps out at me is to wonder if you can do a slightly darker pin wash where the knee armour joins the thighs? It doesn't quite look like the two bits are separate to me?

They see the world in more than black and white. There are whole swaths of heretics, and they each need a special treatment. Some you burn. Some you torture until they confess. Some you hook up to walking torture machines. Some you turn into murder-frenzy bots. The right zealous overreaction for the correct circumstance.
I’ve been using natural sable brushes for a while, and mostly take care of them, but could be better. Hopefully these will help. Little nervous. Eventually they will probably get ruined, but I’ll get good use from them first. Hopefully.

Right now I’m letting the Apothecary white do all the work. I might go back and pop out a few details, but probably not. Once I finish up the lot of them, I’ll go back and look at them all together. See if anything needs to be done.

Got the new bugs caught up. Next step is the red. Canoness is almost done. Needs a little highlighting, and I think I’m going to add another wash to some of the golds, just to break her up a little. She is very mono-chromatic. I have 3 more gaunts waiting for paint. No more sisters. Well, not primed. I have more arcos still in blister, and more old lead nids that need to be cleaned. I’d like to polish off the primed nids by year’s end. Should be doable. Which will wrap up wave one of the invasion. Once the canoness is done I’ll start my year end summery and photoshoot. There are sometimes a few models that slip between the cracks that get finished after the summery but before the new year, probably the bugs this year. Also in the news I got Amazon Prime, so have started binge watching The Expanse. I’ve had book 8 sitting at my elbow next to my recliner for a while now, really need to start reading it. Book 7 was just so-so, not a huge push to start. But overall the series was quite good, so I’d like to finish it out. Assault Intercessors are backordered on all the Amazon sellers, just going to wait for them to be in stock before ordering. At that point the heavy intercessors or bladeguard might also be out. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and were good little boys and girls that Santa rewarded with new Hobby stuff. Edit: Canoness is done and just got the first rock layer, Nids got their reds and black wash down. Going to need a lot of cleanup. Devourers make it hard to get a brush places, lot of slop.

Canoness got her seal coat for the base, just needs to dry. That’s the last sister for now. Will grab group shots later.
Last 3 nids down, just got their purple. Letting them dry a bit, then a quick cleanup and they get to move along to the next stage.
The ones that were WIPs are not waiting to be based.
In an ideal world I’ll get them all painted tonight, and everyone based early tomorrow for the final pics.

Yup. Guiliman Flesh over zentari dust or shining gold. Nothing fancy. I do mix it up sometimes with the other (darker) flesh contrast, and sometimes alter the base for the skin, or just go straight over grey seer.
So that’s a wrap for 2020 folks.
Just need to base the bugs and take the pics. Might paint up some spare bits, or build stuff to run down the clock till 2021. Amazing how fast things go when you alternate episodes of The Expanse and putting layers down.
Woolgathering, summaries, plots, plans, and random musings and ravings to follow.
And pics.

Hopefully they can find a battlefield with some heretics. I delivered them yesterday with some cookies to my friend, who’s army they belong too. He’s been in an out of the hobby, and it looked like 8th was going to get him hooked again, but then covid hit. We’ll see if he sticks with it once things clear up. Once a year games with him and his cousins was the only 40k I got in during the times the decent FLGSs were out of business.
So by my math I painted 120 minis this year. No vehicles, (but the giant bug mostly counts there)
Deathwatch: 4 models, 120 points
Ultramarines: 30 models, 987 points
Sisters of Battle: 25 models, 468 points
Eldar: 6 models, 320 points
Tyranids: 48 models, 687+Zoat points
Undead: 5 models, 75 points.
Points are from when I painted them, so some are 8th. It’s all fuzzy anyway. But that brings us to 2,657 points of paint over 120 models. Not bad.
And now, to work. Will muse more later.

There might have been a year where I painted more then this one, but if so, it was back in the depths of time, before recorded history.
So a little deathwatch got done:
Just 4 guys, not quite enough to count as a squad. With the changes to how DW hits the field, These guys might be a dead project. I might paint one or two for fun or painting comps, but getting them table ready would require a near full reorg. And I’ve got other projects.
Ultras got a pretty good spread this year.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. From the depths of the RT era to modern 9th ed primaris. The old stuff was mostly formulaic. But good to get it out of the pile of shame. I like the new characters. Quite fond of the conversion work and the paint on the chaplain. All the arctic camo in general I like how it turned out. Which is good, as I still have a chunk of phobos guys to do.
Eldar just got a little bit done:
Nothing earthshaking, but solid work on units to add to the army. One problem with just playing crusade games is the lack of time for the Eldar on the battlefield.
Undead.
Again, no major breakthroughs here. Just another unit added to the shelf from the Pile of Shame.
Still need to recap the Nids, but they need more time and my lunch break is almost over.

I should really ask him how big his collection is, and to drag out all the stuff I painted for a photo op. It’s a lot. But glad to be able to wrap up that box by the end of the year. But I’ll do the goals summery later.
Now, Nids:
We got the whole range from little gribbles to giant death noodles. Well, only one really big bug, but that’s going to change in the upcoming year. Also a range of age. Old metal mixed in with new plastics. Well, as new as ’nid plastics get.
This was my quarantine project. Starting a nid army has always been a pipe dream. And there have always been a number of barriers to making it happen. Big one was the cash. Hobby budgets are not limitless, and I already have a number of armies that would take priority. But I’m running out of things to get for my Eldar (unless they release more in plastic) and my Ultras don’t really lack for much (although could always use a few more boxes...). I’m generally tight with money to start with. When married on a single income, with a spouse who was less then good about watching expenses, I got in the habit of tightening my belt even tighter to compensate. Now, I’m on my own, and living comfortably within my means. Why not spend money on things that make me happy? And when the government tossed me a check, while I still had a job and income, I treated it like found guilt-free money and plowed it into the FLGS to start the swarm.
The other major thing holding me back was painting the host of gribbles needed to properly swarm. I’m going to the classic, little bit of everything look. A few big bugs in a carpet of little ones. And that takes a lot of paint. Contrast paints were the miracle that made this posable. For a stupidly small amount of effort, you get really solid table top work. At all scales. It takes me longer to clean mold lines and glue the guys together then it does to paint.
Right now all the primed bugs have been painted. Wave one complete, to the tune of about 750 points if you count everything. Next year should see that more then doubled. Although getting 1,500 points table ready is going to be my goal.

Ultramarines: 30 models, 987 points
Sisters of Battle: 25 models, 468 points
Eldar: 6 models, 320 points
Tyranids: 48 models, 687+Zoat points
Undead: 5 models, 75 points.
And I just plugged the new stuff into Battlescribe total army lists.
Ultra - 15,598
Eldar - 3,991
Nids - 825
Deathwatch - 1,359
Last year I wrote:
Now, these are the points I counted as I painted them. Not included are any adjustments from codex drops or CA19. I did just update my lists in Battlescribe, and have the Deathwatch in at 985 points, the Ultras at 13,310, and the Eldar up to 3,264.
They don’t add up, but this is not shock. 9th ed changed a lot of points.
Deathwatch got a bit less playable. I don’t have the new supplement, but battlescribe would not let me do a few things. Mostly mix my primaris the way I’d like. I was able to split the reivers and agressors off into their own squads, but the pair in inceptors need a sarge. Or 5 heavy intercessors to hide behind. Pretty much all the wind has been sucked out of my sails on these guys. The whole look and theme of the army was mixed squads, and I lost all that. Would have to basically double it in size to get it to where I’d want it. And it looks like they scrapped all the synergy rules. At least the intercessors can get play as vet intercessors in my Ultra army.
Looking at the primed pile there are a LOT of Ultras there. Pretty much the entire Indomius box. And a bunch of other stuff. Other armies are a lot lighter. I’ll do a update on that soon.
But that’s enough typing and math for now. Enjoy your evenings folks.
