It's a good thing that the country is running so well that the Ministers are using their down time to focus on the big issues...
I'm also pretty sure banning porn unless you sign up to it (that'll be an awkward conversation) is a pretty blunt tool to solve bad parenting issues. While we're at it, better not let the children see any scenes of bad table manners or cursing.

Its not law yet and it will hopefully not pass through parliament (although that puts a lot of unwarranted hope in the UK political system).

But Ms Perry argued filters would make a difference, saying that the killers of schoolgirls April Jones and Tia Sharp had accessed legal pornography before moving on to images of child abuse.
I think the bolded text sums up this 'debate' very well.

It's annoying, but it is pointless political posturing to the Daily Fail and "Think of the childrun" groups. Just look at the arguments.
Basically it is "Who would want to watch porn anyway? Pervs, thats who. Rapists and Peados!!!! Why would anyone want to watch porn!!!!". Its a stupid idea from a party that wants to be living in the 1950's.
Nothing will happen as it is not part of the coalition agreement, it is not part of the party manifesto and it is not even a draft bill. The Tory party don't even need to do anything. Just by making the statement it makes them look like they are doing something, and people who don't want porn will forget about it (at least until they catch there 16 year old looking at porn).
There are much more important things to sort out, but "think of the childruns!!!" and "All men are rapists!!!!" goes down well with the core lower middle class Tory supporters, as long as you make it clear that by "all men" you mean immigrants, the poor, the young, childless men, and the "weird" but not white, middle class suburbanites (I.E. non Daily Wail and Torygraph readers).

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Yes I know it's an Opt-In and all I have to do is let my ISP know that I want to view filth to be allowed to but I still resent having to go on an 'I like porn' database to watch it. Especially as databases have a habit of going missing.
This is really poor lawmaking and what’s more does nothing to halt the really nasty stuff which is traded via darknet anyway. Hopefully this will go the same way as minimum pricing on alcohol and plain packaging on cigarettes both of which were floated by the government and subsequently dropped.

I don't have that ability, and I'm not about to ask my grandparents to turn the filter off so I can get my daily fill of bouncingbazongas.com
Not that I'm amazingly bothered anyway, all of my comments here thus far have just been poking fun at the situation.

Grand just what we have all been crying out for a Conservative Government approved internet
The bit about having a list of banned words is rather ominous. This country just won one battle against the Thought Police with the governments U turn on jailing people for being a bit rude on twitter and facebook. Now its happening all over again but this time they get to call all there detractors Peedos, and exploit the victims of crime to bolster there argument.

See, does this apply to stuff you make yourself? Because one of my best freinds is quite deeply into BDSM, so if she were to film what she did and then watch it, she could face charges? That's asinine.

There are also some very real civil liberties issues here. Just who is going to judge what is and isn't 'violent' porn?
I was expecting this to be honest, after all the tories love to pander to the middle english.
Hey, my family is middle english and I don't support this idea. It seems more aimed at parents who complain about the evils of porn whilst not being willing to have a genuine discussion with their children about it and its "evils".

Well, what do you expect with your outdated 15th C ideas (I think you mean middle class).

Yeah, but Palindrome used the term Middle English, so I responded in kind.
This does seem a rather antiquated concept though.

The Daily Mail and Daily Express can be hard to avoid online, especially if you follow shortened links from Twitter. So we made Kitten Block - a browser plugin that redirects any visits to these websites to a calming picture of kittens.
Helpfully blocks the Daily Mail and Daily Express websites and shows you a picture of a cute kitten or a nice cup of tea.

This won't make any difference to kids accessing porn, they don't use their home connections to get hold of it, they use their smartphones, which are easier to hide/ lock and don't have internet history... and won't be subject to this filter.
Also, blatantly obvious - Royal Baby Day = Good day to bury bad news.

Web censoring at college meant I couldn't read this thread because of keywords. I hope it will be better than this. Mind you, apparently TVTropes is porn according to college.

Sorry but I don't get what the problem is here. If you want pron you can still get it, you just have to ask your provider for it. It may be a bit embarassing for the person asking for it through an email or phone call (I suppose).
they aren't really blocking it, because supposedly adults that want it can still get it. Hopefully it prevents children from exposure to this stuff.

I just want to know when the USA will do this!

The problem isn't so much the actual blocking of content, but the way of going about 'solving' the issue. There are so many ways around these things it's untrue; it's like wrapping your valuables in cling film hoping that a burglar will decide it's not worth the hassle to unwrap. Anyone who is sick and perverted enough to want to view things like child porn will not be put off, kids will still use proxies and workarounds, and everyone else will simply be inconvenienced.
On the subject of "just ask your provider", a LOT of adults are still living with parents here in the UK both because of the terrible job market, university fees being astronomically high, and house prices soaring far beyond what first-time buyers and even groups of friends can afford, both in rent and actual cost. Imagine having to walk up to your parents and ask them to get the filter turned off so you can whack one out.
