Daemonhosts are hilariously random, but are do they have any earthly or unearthly use? For 10 points apiece, I suppose you can afford to gamble. I just get confused by a low-end close-combat unit that 2/3 of the time gets a random but rather lovely boost to melee and 1/3 of the time gains a shooting attack.

Also I have difficulty imagining how the Inquisitor justifies his pet Daemonhosts to his Adepta Sororitas battle brothers (sisters):

SISTER: So those guys are all psykers?
INQUISITOR: The good kind! Totally sanctioned and everything!
SISTER: That one's, uh, foaming at the mouth.
INQUISITOR: Overflowing with love for the God-Emperor!
SISTER: And levitating.
INQUISITOR: It's a miracle!
SISTER: And spewing obscenities about how our corpse-god cannot save our pitiful human souls from the all-consuming hunger of the Warp.
INQUISITOR: Ah, yes. Um.
SISTER: [checks pilot light of heavy flamer is on]
INQUISITOR: It's opposites day! It's opposites day on his planet so he's really talking about how the immortal Emperor Protects! Ha! Ha!
SISTER: You're not one of those radical Inquisitors, are you?
INQUISITOR: Oh my look at the time I have to go ktxbai.

They are 10 points with a 5+ invul and T4 though, right? They can take some fire. That said, yes they pretty much suck! A whole unit might do some damage in shooting however, if they roll right for powers.

Mmm, I still don't care much for these new ones, had myself a few back when they were 0-1 elites in Daemonhosts.

Ahh good times, I even remember their D6 ability had +D3 S and T, like an old fashioned Iron Arm.

Once had a game where they kept healing themselves completely every turn in combat.

But yes these new ones could be interesting for a cheap invulnerable blocker, though I did see a full unit end up with S8 shots..Was rather surprising to see my KoS disappear under a flurry of S8 Warp Gaze..

My only problem with them is that they should be A2 or something, even if you get S6 they are still WS3...

That dialogue made me chuckle, have an exalt.

On topic, I can't see a use for them in the builds for AS that I've been running. Space monkeys and psymeras on the other hand...

The only reason the run these, ever, is for the lols.

Same as any other "generate random buffs each turn" unit in the game really.

They are all hysterically fun, but about as tactically sound as strapping time bomb unto squirrles and hope they will be in the right place at the right time.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

They can be semi useful to bring a unit up to T4.

Otherwise they are one of those *fun* units more useful for kicks and giggles than for winning games. They certainly are memorable when you roll the right number at the right time.

Having played Skaven and Night Goblins once upon a time, I can appreciate the fun of wildly unreliable units....

Thanks. Imagining that scenario was really the main reason I couldn't get Daemonhosts out of my head.....

The Jokaero kind of break the grimdark for me, though. Even the name screams "joke!" I'm honestly surprised they survived when everything else silly has been brutally purged since the old days of Rogue Trader when the game's tongue was firmly in its cheek.....

P.S.: Sorry for the auto-appended posts; my kids got me up too early and I'm too tired for figure out how to quote multiple people in one post....

T4 is about the most useful thing they bring consistently. Rather expensive upgrade

Honestly...I think they're only worth it in fun games where the unit is composed solely of Daemohosts...then...play them like daemons...

I also prefer when they ran around solo and could teleport around the field and could get superfleet or 13 attacks on the charge...made for eventful games.

So did old DCA...My daemonhunter DCA were renown for beating the odds. I once had one kill 5 Lightning claw terminators and then finish off a squad of assault marines before eating a bullet.

If you're going for toughness get Arcos...at least they can put out the punishment...are they T5 again or just S5?

I kind of want to play deamonhosts competitively. When they roll shooting powers, they are great. 12 S4 Ap3 blasts or 12 S8 Ap4 shots for 120pts, YES PLEASE!

It is just too bad they are so horrible 2/3 of the time.

If they had a shooty "primaris"-power you could default to, they would be great.

A build that might work can be 3x plasma acolyte + 9 deamonhosts in a psybolt chimera. 192pts, so not cheap, but you are always firing at least the three plasmaguns and you have a survivable scoring unit. You will win close combat against other non-cc units. And of course, you have the potential to output disgusting amounts of damage at 36". If they get their statistical two rounds of 5/6, then 90pts is looking pretty nice for the deamonhosts.

Might be worth adding a priest or maybe a deathcult to make you tougher/slightly killyer in close combat too.

The safer version of this unit is plasma servitors + acolytes. This unit needs an inquisitor, so ends up more expensive, can`t fire on the move, can`t fight in cc against anything and is much less survivable though.

Huh? My Codex:Inquisition says S4 T4. Is there an update I missed or something?

D'oh.

I want arco-flagellants to be Beasts, darn it. The thought of these horribly mutilated cyborgs getting down on all fours and scuttling over rocks and rubble like nightmarish animals just appeals to me.... Maybe I can homebrew some wargear that gives them a "beast mode" combat drug or something.

Ok, I can see how that could be effective. So stick 3 plasma henchmen, a pack of 5 psykers and 2 demonhosts (and whatever else you want to use the other slots for) into a chimera. That way you'll have 6 s7ap2 shots, 1 pieplate of S7ap2, and 1 maybe awesome demon ranged weirdness. (at short range of course)

If you have the extra 10/20 points I could see it being amazing if it rolls well

I'm not going to be sold on more than 1 or 2 in a unit though. Too variable

Wasnt there just such a thing in C:WH?

There was but I think it was just extra attacks. It was also needlessly complex like a lot of old rules... Say what you like about 6th, but it's (by GW standards) streamlined.

If you want more along the same lines, plus an actual plot, I just wrote a whole Sororitas/Inquisition story: Able Baker. (No Daemonhosts in it, though; just a psyker, acolyte, death cult assassin, and sage, plus Alan Tudyk as an Ordo Hereticus inquisitor). Comments much appreciated.

WARNING: Ratio of serious:silly (grimdark:grimsnark) rises dramatically towards the end.
