So I've been slowly (so slowly.........) piecing together and sculpting a custom demon prince for a friend of mine. The most recent addition is the loincloth around his waist, but I'm not totally sure I like it. Something like this is necessary for the model, since the join between the torso and tentacles is very weird looking. I plan on adding an ornate belt as well to add some extra detail. I'm not sure the cloth is realistic enough, I guess. I've sculpted robes onto space marines before with some pretty nice results, but it was wayyy more difficult on this model. It's supposed to be a little ragged, as if it was stitched together from some kind of leather or skin. It's the next component I really have to complete, and although I don't want to scrap it I'm a perfectionist and have no qualms about re-sculpting.

TL;DR - Does the loincloth pass or fail?

Very nice start. You've captured a lovely sense of movement in the tentacles.

Excellent work so far. The tentacles are nice and smooth without fingerprint smudges. The loincloth looks professionally made as well. One thing I would caution is to keep an idea of the flow of the model in mind as you work on the arms. If you pose the arms up and out as we normally see on this kind of model, it will ruin it. It seems to me they should be posed down and back a bit, maybe palms forward getting ready to throw magic.

Thanks for all the kind words! @bossfearless : Thanks! I do have arms sculpted for this guy, but I still don't know exactly how they're going to be posed. He will have a black mace (that I still haven't sculpted yet.) I hate the GW DP arms, and they wouldn't work for this guy's style anyway. I'll post some pics later tonight of what I have so far!

Alright, so these are the bases of the arms, artfully bluetacked on. He will be holding onto a black mace in the arm that has no fingers so far (they'll probably need to be sculpted from scratch once I build the mace.) I picture it kind of dropped down beside him, with the head pointing down. This guy is in no hurry to smash your head in; he knows it's inevitable. I was thinking about adding a dead marine to the empty hand, but I thought it made the model look cluttered once I tested it. The arms are meant to be a bit larger than is natural, in part to balance out the enormous wings but also just because I think it looks creepy. I've been drawing inspiration from some of Guillermo del Toro's monsters, and how he creates terrifying designs by altering key aspects of human anatomy (search for the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth if you don't know what I'm talking about.) Looking at the pictures I realized they might be TOO big, but it's better when you're actually seeing the model IRL. He will have pauldrons so the shoulders don't look so bare, which should also balance out the arms a bit. Any crit on the arms?

On another note, I realized this may be straying into P&M Blog territory. Do I just need to contact a mod to have the thread moved/should I?

Don't worry his proxy has gone up against eldar, grey knights, and dark angels only to be purged. However those were only proxies, when this guy actually hits the table finished he might be more of a threat.

That's gorgeous. Evocative and just wonderfully done. Somewhere, RIGHT NOW.....in New England, the bones of H.P. Lovecraft are furiously trying to call on the might of the Dark Things beyond the stars to reanimate him and bring him to you so that you may shake his cold, dead hand for this.

For the Lion and Terra!

Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.

Ah! I'm honored! I've been fascinated with all things eldritch since i tracked the word back to Lovecraft through the pages of my favorite books. He's been a definite inspiration as well. I think I'm going to try and have this thread moved to P&M Blogs, since all the interest has kind of lit a fire under my a$$ and I think he'll be progressing a bit faster now! Thanks for all the helpful comments and pats on the back guys.

I really like your demon prince. The cloth/leather/skin skirt looks very good. As well the size of the arms works good. At least for me.
The flow of the tentacles is nice altouhg I tink they could benefit from some detials here and there. Maybe veins or pustules or cracked skin or things like that. At present they are a little bit to smooth for my taste.
Considering shoulderpads: Don't make them to big and dominant.

Looking forward to progress updates.

Thanks guys! @pfibp, I actually agree. The tentacles were incredibly hard to get right, (there were 3 tentacle versions before this one that I scrapped.) I had to do each tentacle separately, let cure, and then do the next one so it didn't turn into a sloppy mess. I've been thinking about going back and putting some details, but it will probably wait until I have his arms and black mace complete. Then I can start on the fun little details.

Anyway, here's a teensy bit of progress. I added a belt, which isn't quite finished, and started the base of his black mace. I'm designing it based on a mash up of some Japanese maces I've been researching. It's meant to look deadly and efficient. Right now it's 4 sided; I intend on filing down the corners and adding short spikes coming out of those sides. There will be other details, obviously, and whenever I actually get to paint I want to add some OSL coming from within the cracks of the mace. Once I add the handhold details and such it will look a little bit bigger, but I'm kinda concerned the mace is just a bit too small Any comments on that? I don't want to go too far on it and then tear it all down......I've done that way too many times already on other parts of the build.

Also please ignore the way his arms fit on right now: there will be a lot of adjusting to make that whole deal look more natural.

Sorry my iPhone camera can't get much more macro than this I'll bring in some better lighting soon and that should help out a bit.

Wow, it's been a while. No excuses, I just fell off the modeling wagon. Anyway, he's finally got a mace and some scratch sculpted fingers. The belt is done as well. Now I'm just deciding on some shoulderpads. I could build my own I suppose, but if anyone has suggestions for DP sized shoulder pads (not the stock ones,) please post 'em! Next up, filling in/fixing the shoulders and then it's pretty much on to finishing details once I figure out shoulder pads.

I like the loincloth very much, as I do the rest of the model.

The only exception is the tentacles. You've got a lot of them, and they are writhing nicely, but they don't look like tentacles. They need to have more detail on them. Like suckers, for example, or if you want them to be worm-like, they could have a few little ridges. Perhaps some bit of detail on the tips of them as well.

The tentacles look very nice, but it also looks like they're only half-way done, especially with how much detail you're putting into the rest of the model.

As you say, I'm sure you'll come back to it, and having something good look worse because something else looks great isn't exactly the worst problem to have.

Good work so far. Can't wait to see it done.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I'm actually going back and adding some details to the tentacles over the next few days. It's not going to be a huge change, but hopefully it'll balance out the level of detail in the model. Stay tuned for pics!
