Well, if I want to get my DCM this century, I think it would help. But maybe I can refund you if he turns out alive in the last book or something.

d-usa, I love that theory. Let's kick it up a notch-
Spoiler:
The Mountain's new head is actually Tywin Lannister's! Two chapters of the next book will chart the struggle of his calculating consciousness battling the brutal body he now loosely controls, in between magic and drug ridden blackouts. Through it all, he develops one overriding purpose- kill the dwarf, and fear spears. GRR Martin will use the page in a revolutionary way- giving Tywin's head the top half of the page, and the Mountain's brooding consciousness the bottom of the page.
This is tremendously unlikely.

There are a lot of zombies walking around this world. Fortunately they're not the zombie apocalypse kind but still. We have ice zombies North of the wall, fire zombies calling themselves "Red Priests", and some sort of automatons that are being made (?) in the black cells beneath Kings Landing.
I suspect that Melisandre will use "the breath" to resurrect Jon Snow as was done to Catelyn Stark in the South.
I think the Mountain is now a zombie and the whole "always wearing the helm" is to hide the disfiguring scars from the poison Oberyn Martell used on him. I think the skull sent to Dorn belonged to someone else.
I believe that the Hound is dead. The guy acting in his name just isn't doing things that fit with what we know of the Hound. And wasn't the imposter revealed when he tried to kill Brianne?

Spoiler:
The imposter was Rorge, who apparently came across Sandor's "grave" and took the helmet for himself to impersonate the Hound as he went on a killing and robbery spree.
Its implied (and speculated by readers) in the books that a monk from the Quiet Isle came across the dying Sandor and cared for him, saving his life. In gratitude, Sandor accompanied the monk back to Quiet Isle and took up the monastic lifestyle, because it offered him peace and a chance for redemption. The "grave" is actually empty, as it was "The Hound" that the monk buried - it represents Sandor shedding that old aspect of his personality.
Brienne meets the monk at the Quiet Isle and sees an unusually tall (and hooded?) gravedigger, digging dozens of empty graves Its speculated that the monk instructed Sandor to dig a grave for each of his victims. She also notices a very distinctive and large black horse whose appearance and temperament matches that of Sandor's warhorse, Stranger.
In the books, Brienne has never met Sandor so does not recognise him. In the show she has met Sandor and can recognise him, so that has interesting implications if the show does include the Quiet Isle next season.

You do not need to have met someone to notice a half-burned face, so really Sandor should not be that hard to identify. At least for the reader.

Given how they did that last episode, they won't include the quiet Isle, but I also think that this just helps confirm that Sandor Clegane is alive. As was argued up above, if the character is not confirmed to be dead, then don't make that assumption. In both the book, AND the tv show, they've left his fate open. I'd say that is because he is alive.

Spoiler:
Well, IIRC the gravedigger was hooded and off in the distance digging graves, and Brienne never got close to him so its likely that she simply didn't see his face.

d-usa wrote: Jon and fire are not exactly friends either though. He got burned pretty bad during the attack of the old master when he pulled the curtain down.
Spoiler:
You don't read books do you? In the books we rarely see Jon interact with fire.
Spoiler:
Except that time where he got burned, by fire.
Also, you folks are all really convinced that Jon is dead, ey?
Spoiler:
Jon is for all intents and purposes 'dead'.
However, it's pretty clear that he's the true Champion of Light, and when the Watch burn his body, he'll rise again as the reborn Son of Rholler. At which point, Mel will likely flip out...
Are you kidding me? She'll swoon for him.
Spoiler:
All this time she's been banging old, ugly, gruff and harsh Stannis. Gritting her teeth and doing her duty for the Lord of Light as the old geeza bonks her, because Stannis is supposed to be Azor Ahai. And then all of a sudden along comes this young, buff, sexy teenager who proves beyond all reasonable doubt that HE is Azor Ahai.
If you ask me, there's already some chemistry between the two. I'll bet she doesn't think Jon has trouble getting it up, unlike Stannis (<refuses sex> "Your fire burns low my King").
Calling it now, Melisandre will play the role of Nyssa Nyssa.
Spoiler:
Well, it's more likely she'll flip her gak because she's put too much effort into making Stannis believe he's the true Azor Azhai. He's not going to be very happy when he finds out that Mel's gakked it up and that he's not the one the prophecy foretold...
Between the story of the true Lightbringer as told by Davos' pirate buddy Salador from early on ACoK's, and Mel seeing Jon appear in her fires instead of Stannis, (despite her best efforts to try and make it appear to be Stannis!), it's about as cemented as it can be that Jon is not dead and will become the reborn Azor Azhai.
Regarding Lightbringer...
Spoiler:
I like the theory that it isn't actually a sword...that all the named swords etc in the series are red herrings. Lightbringer might be the Night's Watch. Just listen to the vows.

Well, that's a surprise...but not really the more I think about it. It sure doesn't look like Coldhands is arriving either, and I feel like the show has pared back a lot of the larger mysteries and R'hllor/Great Other stuff (other than that one scene with the baby and possible Night's King, which in some ways seems more out of place than ever).
Clearly the writers are veering more from the books all the time, although I also suppose they could fill in more of the R'hllor/Great Other/Azor Ahai stuff in the coming season or two, given that we're starting to approach the area when Melisandre's POV chapters take place, etc.
The actress could also be lying or been lied to by the writers, but that would be one of the dumbest attempts at obfuscation since Abrams' "it's not Khan" nonsense.

It's possibly they're straying a bit more because they are going to out pace the books, so they (HBO and Martin) have agreed to keep things different enough that the book readers still want to read the books.

there is just not much Lady Stoneheart in the books yet. So introducing her at this point would be a good cliffhanger, but they sold have nothing to follow up with since there is nothing for her character to do next season. Until there is a book that gives her some purpose, there is no reason to include her story.

I think that makes a lot of sense, but then again you have the baby scene, which was a bolt of lightning out of the blue to both book readers and show watchers that promptly went absolutely nowhere.
Although I suppose the purpose there might have had nothing to do with the story, and everything to do with tacking a little shocker/conversation piece onto the end of an episode to keep people talking about the show.
So, I ran across this little gem in the wilds of the internet. I expect, as the article indicates that one of the two big battles will be Stannis v. Bolton at Winterfel and the second will be the siege of Meereen.

SANTE FE, N.M., June 26 (UPI) --George R.R. Martin has revealed new details about The Winds of Winter.
The 65-year-old author spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the highly anticipated sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. A Dance with Dragons left off with Ramsay Bolton claiming he crushed Stannis Baratheon in the north, the Yunkai attempting to overthrow Daenerys Targaryean with an attack on Meereen and Tyrion signing on to the mercenary Second Sons.
"I think we're gonna start out with a big smash with the two enormous battles," the author says. "We have more deaths, and we have more betrayals. We have more marriages."
"Tyrion and Dany will intersect in a way, but for much of the book they're still apart," he reveals. "They both have quite large roles to play here. Tyrion has decided that he would actually like to live, for one thing, which he wasn't entirely sure of during the last book, and he's now working toward that end -- if he can survive the battle that's breaking out all around him. And Dany has embraced her heritage as a Targaryen and embraced the Targaryen words. So they're both coming home."
The author also teases there is "a lot of stuff happening at The Wall," where Jon Snow was attacked after taking command of the Night's Watch.
A release date for The Winds of Winter has not yet been set, and some speculate it may arrive as late as 2017. A Dance with Dragons was released in 2011.
People speculating about the release date are likely Bretonnian players.

God why does multi-quoting suck so badly on this forum.
RE: Jon snow
Spoiler:
I doubt that he is the champion of the lord of light over stannis, or light bringer. That doesn't mean that Mel wouldn't save/resurrect him, but is that required when they have a pro maester there anyway? stannis isn't going to stand for an uprising at the wall, so while Jon is definitely going to be in a bad state, I don't see him dead.
Further, I am still hanging on to this idea that he is half targarean, and they love fire - so this could get interesting
RE: Gambling
Spoiler:
I will also bet 1 person DCM for 12 months that Jon is not dead
RE: GRRM
We don't need him to live to know how it is going on, part of the HBO deal was to tell them how it all plays out so they can finish it when he dies anyway.
I really need to re-read the books, I don't remember half of this stuff - I read them all between S1 end and S2 start :/

The latter has already been confirmed by the Winds of Winter sample chapters released by GRRM. Apparently its going to take place very early in the book.
Spoiler:
Barristan Selmy leads the Unsullied and the mercenary companies loyal to Daenerys out of Meereen in a sortie to destroy the siege weapons of the Yunkish armies. The dragons Rhaegal and Viserion escape and eat the corpses being launched over the walls of the city by the Yunkai, then split up with Rhaegal flying to the docks and over Slavers' Bay, and Viserion returns to his lair in the pyramid (possibly injured).
The chapter concludes at the height of the battle, with the Yunkai in disarray and reeling from Barristan's sortie, when suddenly an unknown force (the Ironborn lead by Victarion Greyjoy) land on the shores and join the battle, apparently siding with Meereen against the Yunkai. Its a total mindfeth for Barristan because he has absolutely no idea who these new allies are.

Disclaimer: we did not watch Season 4 yet, so I don't know what happens in there. I'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible.
Screw the Iron Throne!
Seriously, though, what would you want to do with it? The Starks are out, the Lannisters are out, the smaller houses are out as well.
So it basically boils down to Stannis and Daenarys...and the latter proved being a terrible ruler multiple times. But she has dragons. Then again, she won't come to Westeros before the last book (as proclaimed by Martin himself). So...Stannis takes the Iron Throne?
Winds of Winter:
Spoiler:
Jon already acknowledges him as the true heir and cooperates with him, helping him find out the treachery. He has support of the Wildlings. And Stannis already made plans in case he should fall to the Boltons. And by god, I hope he does not listen to Asha and burns Theon alive!
There basically is noone worth rooting for left :(
