STC_LogisEngine wrote:Ummm... Guys? Could you perhaps stop making a non-factual statements about the Gods and culture of my ancestors? A few corrections if you dont mind: 1). No, we did not use chariots. Owning a chariot in the Scandinavian pininsula is a truly stupid thing, you need open ground for chariots, and this place is made up of dense Taiga forest, lakes everywhere, boulders, hills, mountains and fjords. 2). Our gods did not muck about with horses, that was just that one time Loki did it and he was a female horse at the time. 3). Viking is not a name for a demographic, it's a job description, in other words "raiding the rich weaklings on the continent and beyond".
Viking in fact comes from a verb where a group would go out viking and try to win loot. These peoples were generally from Denmark or Norway of the descendants of the people from these region that had settled elsewhere like in England or Normandy. Then they would go home and farm their lands. Job Description isn't quite right since most of the people who would go on raids were farmers or traders most of the time and just went on a few raids to make lots of money to "retire" with. You learn all sorts you didn't after taking a viking history course.

I'm sure we can argue long and hard about the meaning of "Viking", so I'm just gonna put this here: Viking (n.) Look up Viking at Dictionary.com Scandinavian pirate, 1801, vikingr, in "The History of the Anglo-Saxons" by English historian Sharon H. Turner (1768-1847); he suggested the second element might be connected to king: The name by which the pirates were at first distinguished was Vikingr, which perhaps originally meant kings of the bays. It was in bays that they ambushed, to dart upon the passing voyager. But this later was dismissed as incorrect. The form viking is attested in 1820, in Jamieson's notes to "The Bruce." The word is a historians' revival; it was not used in Middle English, but it was reintroduced from Old Norse vikingr "freebooter, sea-rover, pirate, viking," which usually is explained as meaning properly "one who came from the fjords," from vik "creek, inlet, small bay" (cognates: Old English wic, Middle High German wich "bay," and second element in Reykjavik). But Old English wicing and Old Frisian wizing are almost 300 years older than the earliest attestation of the Old Norse word, and probably derive from wic "village, camp" (large temporary camps were a feature of the Viking raids), related to Latin vicus "village, habitation" (see villa). The connection between the Norse and Old English words is still much debated. The period of Viking activity was roughly 8c. to 11c. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the raiding armies generally were referred to as þa Deniscan "the Danes," while those who settled in England were identified by their place of settlement. Old Norse viking (n.) meant "freebooting voyage, piracy;" one would "go on a viking" (fara í viking). I think when we talk about "vikings in space" people know what we're talking about.

The old Logan model looks like the poor old guy has terrible posture. It was sculpted by someone who has no concept of human anatomy OR they hate Logan and wanted him to look like an old man with a spine problem.
first of all, the first Logan was sculpted by Jes Goodwin, who is the master of Space Marine sculpting...
he brought it to the Amsterdam store for an open day in 2000, before it was released, and was very proud of how he presented this aggresive character...
second, i see a charging berzerker, not a hunched old man...
i was blown away when i held the master model in my hands that day...
it was the first action packed Terminator armored sculpt GW ever released...
the new one may be bigger, but he is not better, as far as i'm concerned...
i think you must be misremembering the mini, or only seeing it from a bad angle...
here is my 360 view of the model...
are you telling me that this charging Termie looks like an old man with a spine problem???
personally, i prefer the original, but i'm sure i'll end up painting the new one for somebody...
cheers

Back to the current topic on hand, I prefer the old Logan. Charging into battle, axe drawn back to strike, teeth bared in a howl of fury. This new guy is looking at his axe going "This is my axe! There are many like it but this one is mine!"

He looks a helluva lot more regal with the new sculpt.
I can only think of Conan author Robert E Howards early king Kull strory called "I rule by this axe!".
Anyone try to oppose his reign on the battlefield get to know "I RULE BY THIS AXE!".
Just ask the grey knights what that means.
Edit, ok I got it wrong, its supposed to be "By this axe I rule". Anyway...

I really don't see the chariot, personally. Assuming we accept that medieval-style close combat happens on a regular basis in the 40k setting, the vehicle makes perfect sense for Loagn. Space Wolves are all about the deeds of their heroes, and those deeds will be performed where the fighting is thickest. Having a chariot allows the troops to easily tell where he is, it gets him in the thick of the enemy with more protection than walking, and allows him to fight from the outset and keep mobile, unlike a Land Raider. It also means his retinue of Wolf Guard can instead perform other tasks such as leading the troops elsewhere.
Furthermore, it gives him the bulk and presence to take on the mightiest enemies alone; fluff-wise, at least, he'd be better off charging a Hive Tyrant on that thing that on foot. Space Wolves are all about the heroes, and in every way, the chariot puts Logan front and foremost.

His shoulder PADS are level with his head. His arms could travel down the inner sleeve, armpit to armpit, with plenty of armour between the surface of the pad and the surface of his skin. This would make him more recognisably proportioned.

I always figured the proportions of both Logan and Njal was made so the silhouette of them would look like a large wolf (with the pelt head on top),
therefore making their actual heads somewhat off in the model dynamics. That also make more sense with logans hunched stance.
But ofcourse, if I am the only one who see it this way...

It clearly went over your head, let me explain.
We weren't saying we never heard of the phrase "bad ass", he was making a joke saying you should have meant it as "bad as". See, down here in Aussie and New Zealand, they have this little habit of saying something is "something as" such as, "Oh man, this ice cream is tasty as!" or "That Logan model is controversial as!". Most often here in New Zealand it can be heard in the phrase "Sweet as" meaning cool or alright.
Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion.
