If time travel has taught us anything it's this quote from Soul Reaver 2: History abhors a paradox. First, I doubt that they can really control where they end up, barring the theory that it's the Emperor that pushes them. So they likely end up and it happens to be during a time when something is going on (because something is always going on. Only war and all that) and are like hmm let's jump in because why not. Changing the outcome of some minor battle (in the grand scheme of things) doesn't mess with the timestream that much. Second, even if they could go back in time to the Heresy or Age of Apostasy or any other major event, the ramifications of changing that history might be too great. If they went back and stopped Lorgar from being corrupted (assuming that they even could) then that's no guarantee that there wouldn't still be a heresy, just it would be Guilliman who was corrupted, or Dorn (in fact I've seen an alternate history fan timeline that does just that, the "Dornian Heresy" where like the legions that went traitor stayed loyal and vice versa). There's no telling what could happen if they messed with that timeline, so even if they could it's doubtful that they would.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Orikan the Diviner, who *can* time-travel at will, and end up when and where he wants to, is very careful about using this ability, as even minor changes to history can have disastrous consequences in the future (that is, your present!).

Surely the 40th Millennium is disastrous enough that mucking around with time travel at random will, on average, improve the situation? Or maybe that's how we got here in the first place...

Orikan does it to cheat. He makes a prophecy (hence "the Diviner" part), and then mucks about in the time-stream to make sure it comes true.

I believe the Battles book offers the best insights, as the Legion act to destroy the Keeler Comet - itself a clue as it dates to the Heresy - and to stop a relic falling into Chaos hands, they just happen to save the planet as an aside. I think they are linked psychically to the original chapters and other elements of pre Heresy times. They cannot just be saving the Imperium otherwise they would just appear on Abaddon's ship and fill him full of rounds.

The warp is unpredictable, but its not random. there are some constants about it. We know that for a fact. The Astronomicon doesn't simply shine through randomness. There are paths that the astronomicon illuminate, which allows ships to travel through the warp. That is why ships can reliably navigate it. We also know that its reliable, because if it isn't, then the Empire of Man simply cannot remain intact due to distance and unreliable communication. There are dangers of course, we can all agree on that. There are no certainties. One could always get lost in the ocean, like sailors did during ancient times. But my opinion is that the theory is partially correct. There are consistencies in the warp. And it is a decently reliable way to travel. not certainly, but decent enough.

Just as a side question - do people think the LOTD Codex is worth getting just for the fluff? I'll never play the models, but like good fluff.

The important bits of how they rolled back the LOTD fluff to them being an unknown is the only really major change. The book is much better than the Codex.

I do agree, it probably behaves differently from the Sea or Atmosphere. There must be significant similarities though, because of all quotes that describe it as an ocean.
Regarding human thoughts and emotions (and those of other intelligent races) affecting the Immaterium, I see those as random anomalies like when we do Nuclear Tests in the oceans etc, it screws up things in the vicinity for a while but the overall ocean remains the same.
When the Chaos Gods feth with you just because ----- I'd liken that to under-ocean earthquakes that cause Tsunamis etc. Screws a lot of things for a long time, but given a while - everything settles back down again.

Now do the same creative thing with Kaldor Draigo. I always like to imagine that he and the Legion of the Damned hang out in the warp together like firemen waiting for the alarm to sound.
I don't really like the Draigo fluff at all though, and so wouldn't do him justice.
That is a funny image though and now we need someone to make a picture of it.
give me an hour.
