So Just How Much DLC Does Evolve Have at Launch? $100 Worth
Steven Bogos wrote:At this point, Evolve's DLC policy is a pretty well-known point of contention in the gaming world. But just how much DLC is there available for the game, which just launched this week? At launch, Evolve currently has $100 worth of additional content for purchase - more than twice the value of the "full" retail game.
Breaking it down further, there are 44 pieces of $2-$7 Evolve add-on content listed on the game's Xbox Marketplace product page, totaling $75. To be fair, these are all cosmetic enhancements for hunters, monsters and weapons, such the Kraken Wendigo Skin ($3), the Assault Ragnarok Skin Pack ($5), and the Goliath Bog Skin ($3).
On top of this, there is the $25 season pass which will eventually unlock four new Hunters. There's also technically the "PC Monster Race" special edition which costs an additional $40 over the game's base $60 price tag, and includes the content from the season pass a fifth monster, two new hunters and four additional skins.
So, if you go out and buy the base game ($60), with the PC Monster Race edition ($40), or just the season pass ($25), and then go out and buy all the DLC on the store ($75), you're looking at $160-$175 for a game that has just been released. And that's not even taking into account the poor Australians, who will likely pay double that.
Turtle Rock certainly wasn't kidding when it said the game will have lots of DLC.
Ouch

Arent nearly all the dlc's just cosmetic skins? As in, you don't have to pay for this extra content and it won't hurt your experience?
Tf2 has over a $100 worth of cosmetic dlc, no one complai s about that.
The $70 price tag for the game was bs though.

See, I would agree with the cosmetic argument except for one little point. The bare release copy of this game is barebones. Few characters, few monsters, few maps, few gameplay modes. I very much expect this to go the way of Titanfall. Interesting at first glance, dead after a month.

If the game does suck by itself then yeah, That is a pretty big problem.

Just looked up what the season pass and the pc monster had. While the season pass itself doesnt seem too bad, yeah the monster race bundle does seem a tad bit overpriced and confusing.
Eh, alright after looking at the non skins dlc's, yeah it does suck quite a bit. Thank god for sales in the future eh?

Yeah, I think the Jimquisition covered it pretty well regarding the DLC issues with the game. The game was designed from the ground up to be a DLC delivery system.

Honestly, it's a fun game. The season pass is pretty cheap and the monster dlc came with my pre-order. All the downloadable skins are a waste of money.
I don't see a problem with what the game is doing. It's giving players the ability to spend money on aesthetics, not forcing them to spend money or limiting their access to the game.

The problem is an ethical one.
It's similar to trying to sell a webstore to someone so they can buy from it. If they had released the DLC gradually over time no one would have cared so much, but because it's right there even before the game is it sends a negative message overall.

Yeah, I have no intention of playing this game, but it definitely illustrates the problems with DLC....
I have no problem with having a game, let's use Battlefield as an example, that gets released in June... By September, I'm OK with having a DLC that adds a few new maps. October, yeah, having a "halloween pack" come out is kinda cool
These are all things that can fall under "our developer pushed us for this deadline, so we didn't have a few minor things that we wanted in the game, in the game; But they are completely ready to go now"
Now, with games like Evolve putting out DLC (of any kind, except for store pre-order exclusives) the same week as the title's launch basically says, "We know you'll buy it, so feth you and pay us more for it" Or, at least that's what it says to me.

I personally have found Evolve to be well worth the $60 price tag. I've gotten twelve hours of play on it already with no intention to slow down or stop. As far as the non-cosmetic DLC, all maps and modes are to be free, the only thing you would have to pay for would be new monsters and hunters, but the three monsters and twelve hunters the game comes with is more than enough in my book. I apparently get the Behemoth free but I won't do the season pass simply because I don't like all the hunters, so I need to see details of all four before I buy it.
Don't get me wrong, all the stuff you can buy on day one leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but I've heard (not here) people stretching it and saying they give you absolutely nothing in the base game and you have to grind for new characters or buy them, this is absolutely not the case. You have to work a little to unlock more hunters and monsters but there is no option to simply buy them instead. I like that this game has unlockables. I miss the days when you had to work at the game some to get some new stuff, I'm not a huge fan of buying the new Smash Bros and having only ten out fifty characters need unlocking.
The cosmetic DLC? Well, the stuff they have there already is all pretty bad so waste your money, I guess? I'm not going to tell people what to do. The Wendigo and Bog skins for the monsters are the only good things in the store, in my opinion, and I won't buy them because I much prefer to play the hunter. Especially the medic!

I have the game and honestly, I have no problem with the DLC. Actually, I don't even plan on buying any of the DLC.
All of this griping about the DLC is way overblown.
As mentioned, the majority of DLC is cosmetic so who cares about that. I don't remember people complaining about the vast amount of cosmetic DLC that Gears of War 3 had and they had more.
All of the future maps being released are going to be FREE so that's a non-issue.
Any monster/hunter DLC being released only lets you play as them. However, you can still play with people who have the DLC. So you don't have to worry that you won't be able to shoot a Behemoth in the face if you don't get the DLC; you'll still have your chance. You just won't be able to play as the Behemoth. Same with the new hunters (which they haven't even announced yet).
Yeah, I get it people don't like the idea of DLC. I'm not a big fan of it too.
But honestly? I think this is probably one of the better ways to do DLC, unlike some other games. I remember playing Battlefield and eventually getting booted out by the game because I didn't have the next map that was loading up. That sucked.
At least with Evolve, they want to make it so that the community isn't split/punished for not buying the DLC. Heck, I'm never buying any of the monster DLC because I personally have no interest as playing the monster. MAYBE, I might buy the new hunters but as mentioned by someone else before, I'd have to wait and see what those new hunters have to offer.
I think I even read somewhere that you can even make the AI bots be those characters/monsters even if you don't own the DLC. So that means you can still play with or against them. You just can't actually use those characters.

It's funny that they had to post this:
Editor's Note: We initially incorrectly reported that it would cost players $136 to purchase all of Evolve's DLC. While it is correct that there is $136 worth of content available to purchase on the game's marketplace, this includes several larger bundles that contain multiple skins. With the bundles removed, the amount of content available on the store totals $75.
While yeah, that is still quite a bit--the only thing which someone might consider "necessary" is the $24.99 for the "Hunting Season Pass".
Also they do not mention once that Turtle Rock has stated that they will be publishing new maps and game modes for free, with character costs subsidizing the free content.

You know it's strange. I actually don't mind a lot of skins. Sure it's annoying that the 25 dollar season pass is honestly super valuable to you and I would have preferred it in the game and honestly I dislike how they just spammed the floodgates with skins and the sorts. At the same time, I honestly dislike the publishing of new maps and game modes that cost money. Namely because they tend to divide and divide and divide the community until you end up with something like SPACE MARINE where they have some really cool modes that you'll almost never get to play because the community was already small and it only fractured all the more.
Seriously though, it would have been a bit better in my opinion to save these skins to be released a bit in the future rather than immediately on release.

I've had plenty of fun playing it and the core gameplay is quite entertaining. Twelve hunters and three monsters doesn't seem that bad to me. Might buy some monster dlc, won't bother with skins.
I'd like to see dlc done the same way as halo 3. Some of the maps were free if you bought previous content. It encouraged people to buy dlc and the chance for free maps kept people attracted to the game. everyone wins.

So lets see.
The DLC in the game currently..
Skins - Cosmetic Random Crap.
Season pass - 4 new Hunters
Monster pass - new monsters.
The lower 2. for Hunters and Monsters.. are future content that is basically expansions, you do not have to buy these anytime soon or at all to play.
So really....
Game is $59.99
That's it, you have everything except the optional Skins. It is free to play at this point.
In the future.. you can buy additional hunters and monsters.
So.. people crying they have to pay for future content when they update the game .Along with optional skins
GG internet.. GG you win again.
And to note..
https://www.eternalcrusade.com/founder-store
Game has its Cash shop up, over a year before the game comes out.. or any Beta's.. not even a release date. And people don't complain about this ?

You understand that you're not "buying half a game for $60", right?
You're buying a game for $60. That game has four more Hunters(bringing the total number of Hunters to sixteen as there are twelve Hunters currently in the game) and at least two more Monsters planned as paid downloadable content. They're not planned to be released within the next week or two. They're planned for release in at least three or four months.
The Monster Expansion Pack is planned for "Spring 2015" with the Behemoth being a part of it. The Behemoth is also one of the preorder bonuses meaning that anyone who ordered/purchased the game before release(or in many cases on the day of release) are guaranteed to get the new Monster at no additional cost.

My problem with dlc in general is it along with the early access have totally fethed up what was a pretty good system. PC games used to be released and 6-18 months later get an expansion that was 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of the original game. These expansions added not just more content but also generally had a theme or overall concept to them. The way things work now is ludicrous. I bought into the arma 3 alpha and look at what an abortion the overall release was, they even cut up the single player into chunks because those darn pesky release dates were harshing their buzz or something. We waited and waited for a finished game and still don't have one. The game isn't even finished yet and they already expect players to throw down 25$ for two helicopters, and the next "expansion" (dlc) will add some new sniper rifles for god knows how much $$$ .

I was playing a train sim that, if you bought all of the extra content, would come to more than $1000.
There are flight sims that are the same.
I suppose the key issue here is how much enjoyment can be had from the game that you buy from the shelf. If it's a lot, and the optional extras are really just that (i.e. not a necessity to play and enjoy the game) then perhaps it's not worth worrying about. I do find it interesting though if you think about how gaming arcades would force you to keep pumping money in to see the next level - some DLC almost seems to be an extension of that, and it's funny how things have come full circle within the industry.
