Mine shares shelf space in the craft/box room with my models.
For every area I have filled with plastic crack, she has one full of wool or wool-related 'items'.
So, when my collection gets too big, we'll have to argue over space. That'll keep it contained.

Or, we'll be swimming in sheep-fur.

I went through a similar thing a few years ago. Over a few years, I liquidated 6k of Painted Marines, 5k of unpainted marines, 12k of unpainted Eldar, 1500 each of tyranids and partially converted, partially painted tau, 2500 of mostly painted Orks, 8k of unpainted demons, 1500 points of bare metal catachans, and 3k of Empire.

While digging out of all that stuff, I kept finding things to sell. Mantic Abyssal Dwarves and Elves, 40+ chaos terminators, epic Eldar, and even grey knights. The amount of stuff I had was frankly ludicrious, even if much of it was painted.

What really motivated me to cut back was facing two major moves. First, I moved much of my gaming stuff from my apartment to a clubhouse. Second, I moved apartments. Handling everything led to me finding more and more stuff to unload.

Historically, eBay has been the best way to maximize net sale price while also having the most reliable sale. Rising shipping costs and eBay fees, coupled with very buyer friendly policies, make eBay less attractive, but probably still the best option if cash sale is important.

Other options are more fact specific, including the Dakka Swap Shop, Bartertown, FLGSs that deal in used goods, bring and buys/flea markets, and bitz swapping at cons.

You aren't alone. Off the top of my head, I can think of approximately 2,500 models I have that are unpainted. I have another 500 or so models that are painted, mostly 40k. This is just the stuff that comes to mind. Who knows what I have lurking in the corner of the closet. I also have about 1,200 minis from the Star Wars Miniatures game, if you want to count those. All of this still doesn't account for all the incoming Kickstarters...

One of my life goals is take a group photo of all this stuff.

Haha, yeah, I have these wakeups from time to time. Most recently, I had started working on my IG, and I recently inventoried to find I had mysteriously gained a full 2000 pts of IG on top of the 5000 pts I thought I had. My Sisters broke 1000 pts. And that's just the Imperial T3 stuff, before getting to my MEQs and Eldar. And as I'm poking around, it looks like I have a ton more BFG Eldar than I thought I did. WTF?

Anyhow, I'm working through the IG pile, getting stuff playable. Last year, I got my big DreamForge Crusader playable; then built, primed and basecoated ~100 metal infantry. This year, I'm building a Shadowsword & Stormlord. :nods:

I probably ought to purge more of my stuff if I can't build it, because I've got a ton of Kickstarter inbound this year...

But I'm in control, man. I just gotta stay focused an not buy any more GW stuff. Probably need to clamp down on KS and side projects, too.

How come you sold so much of the painted stuff? You didn't like it? I generally keep painted stuff, because there is some labor in there that you can't just buy back later.

That's a great question. For years I championed not selling painted stuff.

The answer is really two fold. One, I saw the writing on the wall with me and 40k. I wasn't going to get back into it anytime soon, and multiple apocolypse level painted armies is a really unnecessary burden. Two, I didn't like the armies very much. The marines had kind of a dorky paint scheme, and the orks was very much an edition specific tournament list (battlewagon spam from 5th!).

The marines was actually kind of rough, but I had already fallen in love with the idea of 30k, and it was a DIY chapter that I had stretched into too many directions at once. Sure, there was a ton of sweat in that army, but it didn't really show it.

Same. I generally dislike the idea of rebuilding things.

Besides, you have nearly twice as much painted IG as I own (and am still building), so it's not like you're hurting for stuff to put on the tabletop. But I am catching up!
But if you didn't really like the army, then yeah, it makes total sense to cash out.

I get into the bad habit of hobby army turnout. I've got though every army except blood angels and space wolves. I trade A LOT of armies to try different approaches to the game. It made my wife very angry with my hobby expenses. She made me downsize to 3 armies total of any game. So recently got another trade, followed by another trade. So sitting on 6000 points of imperial fists(getting close to finishing painting them) 2500 of dark angels ravenwing , 1500 warriors of chaos, and unknown large amount of dwarfs. Made a promise to my wife I won't buy new models for an army until every model for it is painted. Been going strong for 1 year. Trading is fair game.
Luckily for me I hate kick starters. I've been burned 3x so far in the last 2 years. Reaper miniatures and 2 non hobby ones.

I dumped 99% of my GW stuff a few years ago. keeping a few small projects.

Somehow I still have draws and draws of bits that would yield complete armies with a bit of thought.

I have also just been given a massive tool box full of 2nd ed metal marines, 2nd ed Cadians including the much lauded plastic storm troopers along with metal Eldar and rafts of metal dwarves......And lots of bits.

So, I'm not at the X thousands of points of 40k/WHFB I used to be at but I have enough models now that I can start a few new projects..just to keep my hand in...I wont get anymore....

Her Rule of 3 is a good one, BTW. You can generally cover all of your bases with 3 different forces, especially if they are broad ones.

Kickstarter is dangerous, but the nice thing is that it generally fits in one or 2 boxes. Except Kingdom Death : Monster - that is going to be huge.

One summer several years back, I was going through a very depressing time. I had recently lost my job (due to my own foolishness ) and while I was looking for another one I kept buying stuff (obviously not a good idea with no source of income) until I had spent literally thousands of dollars from my saved up college money on stuff I had no business buying (WOTC Star Wars minis mostly, but some other stuff too, but I didn't start playing 40k until years later). I guess I did it mostly because I was bored and depressed. I lived at home at the time, and when my dad found out that I spent that much money on what he thought was a bunch of crap, he nearly kicked me out of the house (by that time I had another job). I vowed to never again buy stuff just because I was depressed, but I still do collect some stuff, just on a smaller scale (where I can actually afford it).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 25 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

I was angry at the rule at first. But now I really enjoy it. Makes me appreciate what armies I have. And a desire to paint them to the best of my ability. She was ok with the "updated rule for 2 40k, 2 fantasy, and ffg conquest. Which she enjoys with me. She really loves the imperial fist army and how they are turning out. 13 vehicles, 20 assault marines, and 30 infantry left to paint for them. Ravenwing is done. Haven't started sit her of the fantasy armies yet.

The best part about the Rule of 3 is that it forces you to take a moment and think about what you want.

In my case, I treat 40k as my primary game, and have decided on 3 armies for it:
- Eldar
- Imperials (primarily Guard)
- Chaos Marines
It covers the Imperial / Chaos / Xenos triad, along with MEQ / GEQ, etc. Of course, I should have been more choosy in buying stuff against a single FOC, versus trying to complete the Codex, but it's too late for that. Still, I am glad that I backed away from 'crons, Tau and Dark Eldar, never starting Nids or Orks.

BFG is similar with Eldar, Imperials & Chaos fleets. After I get my IG squared away, I'll tackle that Eldar fleet.

If I ever restart Fantasy, it'll be Dogs of War vs Empire, max 3k each, with maybe a smattering of Skaven or Dark Elves.

Definitely need to work harder at paring things down, though. Polonius record of sale is a bit of an inspiration.

I've got an Excel sheet running. But I do agree, it's horrifying when you have that moment when you realize you have a problem.

I thought I'd gotten it down to two armies: IG and Deathwing. But then I acquired some Chaos Marines from a trade, then a boatload of Loyalists (Iron Hands and Black Templars), Orks, and Tau. Easily 30,000 points of stuff that I somehow keep getting through trades. Then there's the Flames of War, X-Wing, and let's not get into my other hobbies...

Yeah, I still have pretty severe burn scars from that. It (along with KoW1) was my first KS, and I foolishly trusted McVey/CMoN to make good on all of the promises made in that campaign.

Backed their large kickstarter, went for one of the paint sets and figures. Received the paint, but no figures, when I opened the paint 1/3 of the paints were dried out and missing their eye dropper caps. 1/3 was usable, and 1/3 took some work to get them usable, never seen paint separate and the top layer "powdered" before. Sent an email explaining what happened, never got a response, left a kickstarter message and nothing. Sent one more message, and finally got a response. their response was that the paints do not go out like that, and that I should use them right(to sum up from memory what was said) For the missing figurines I was emailed back saying that my pledge didn't cover that level, and long story short By the month mark, I got fed up with it and just stopped even looking at kickstarter, that being my third time

I have known that I have too many miniatures that will never get painted, and have slowly been selling stuff off. My biggest impediment has been my 5 year old son, who loves to "play games" with me and whatever catches his fancy. The last time I got rid of something he had played with, he had a meltdown of titanic proportions. Ever since, I've had to do it on the lowdown, which has really slowed me down.

I'm printing that out to keep for the next time the Mrs complains about mini's taking over the house,.

I've got stuff scattered between 5 book cases and 3 display cabinets and a lot of boxes. I occasionally find something I forgot about but I had a huge clear out when I got back into the hobby and I'm being more ruthless about (a) getting rid of stuff I'll never use and (b) at least getting the stuff I will use into some usable state (assembled and primed in an appropriate base colour). Unfortunately I have a problem with bargains, kickstarters, quirky miniatures and starting new games, but I'm managing some restraint. I'm still nowhere near the "painting at least as fast as I buy" mark though.
