I too love the customisation offered by the codex, but I find the idea of mixed Kill Teams of vets/Termies/Bikers etc etc a bit of a headache. I may lean towards small 5 man teams of one type of marine, but is that in the spirit of the army? One thing I am definitely going to have is a full squad of shot guns, I really do not care if they are effective in game or not.

It certainly is, this codex seems to be pretty Movie Marines with regular stats. As in, everyone can get their own power weapon/special weapon loadout.

I scored up what an old Deathwatch RPG Killteam would look like with this Codex and it costs 1200 points for 15 models. Granted, most of that comes from a Dread and SM Command Squad and Techmarine (another issue I'll hit in a second) to include all members of the group. But taking out those units and just left with the core of 7 Veterans, 3 Vanguard, a Captain, a Chaplain and a Librarian, you get around 1100pts. Plus if you throw the Dread in, you get a fieldable Black Spear.

Now, as for customisation, it sounds good on paper by being able to mix and match, but its really not. For example, you're Watch Master can only get his default gear. He can get a situational relic Clavis or any of the other relics but nothing else. Similarly, the Captain can't get many options, just the standard power weapons or a Xenophase blade. He can't even get a relic blade unless wearing TDA. Veterans are really shoehorned into being Devastators, and Vanguards get pricey, as do Terminators. Its great for fluffiness, I guess...but the new fluff has the Deathwatch going full Puritan instead of being flexible like Inquisitors. Where are my Deathwatch marines wielding D-Scythes and Tesla Weapons? Where are their super-duper anti-Xenos gear and rules? All I can see is Sternguard with some rerolls vs a particular FOC slot.

I think that's a fair enough assessment. I guess at the end of the day, they had to hold back a little, otherwise the codex could have wound up being very over powered or completely unusable. Couple that with the constraints of having the models to offer all the options and then you get what we have.

I have to say I played them on monday vs an ork horde and it was glorious. At 1500 pts most of my army was in one unit (3 captains, a chaplain, 5 vets, 2 vanguard, and 2 terminators), but that unit wrecked anything it got close enough to assault. Which, by the way, having a few jump packs in your unit is nearly as good as having all of them with jump packs, especially when one or two of them are a captain with a 2+ armor save and FNP 6+. By chaining their movement, and heroic intervention for rerolls, i was able to successfully charge from turn 2 onto the end of the game. The Beacon Angelis is also now an auto take for me, because in addition to being a deathwatch teleport homer it can warp one of your units (any deathwatch unit, including dreads and tanks) within 6" to quickly reinforce when and where needed.

Overall i'm pleased with the book as a standalone army and while it may not win NOVA or LVO vs the top-tier armies for my needs it's a great book and I love the army's color scheme and customization options.

Also, Stalker-Bolters on a squad of vets are absolutely wonderful. In an aquila with a librarian your to hit and to wound rolls are nearly 100% efficient.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

There's still a lot of questions to be had here, but some of them are a bit off.

Biggest question I, personally, have is why there are stats for the Banebolts for a Stalker pattern Boltgun when none of the characters can take one.

Hadn't seen this pop up before now? £15 for a captain with DW upgrade sprue sounds alright

What I don't understand is the above model is $30 CAN and only $25 American; the base captain kit in CAN was $25, so I have to pay an additional $5+tax for the upgrade sprue?. Why are the prices still so vastly different when us Canadians on top of that pay more sales tax. The Landraider combo box is $95 in the States only $80.

Now my knowledge of economics is rather limited but I'm still confused.

Look forward to Saturday though when they post up the next round of kits.

What I don't understand is how the SM Commander (base kit) is £14 and the upgraded version is £15. Has someone ballsed up on the pricing at HQ?

There's a huge pdf on GW site that explains prices, taxes, fees that the import country imposes on top of the retail pricing which alters prices in each country....

It's because Canada is stupid. I live here. I know. I get hit with tariffs and taxes on every purchase I've made online. I'm sure by now people are familiar with my shipping woes and the general stupidity of Canadian businesses. If they can find a way to tax us they will.

Edit
A quick follow up. The people who said they wouldn't deliver my dremel delivered it and took cash despite saying they didn't. Thanks paypal. If I didn't have them I wouldn't have had any leverage.

Supposed to be some repacks (termies, for example) and some new kits (Watch Master, Corvus Blackstar, etc).

Still hoping they release the transfer sheet separately.

Well once I'm married in a couple years time, moving to Italy. Silly Canada, buying power here is bunk, I mean this bundles are better deals but still makes no sense compared to our not so southern neighbours, i.e. where most of the product we Canadians purchase from GW's comes from

Uh. Do you not realize that with current exchange rates (CAD/USD), you in Canada are paying LESS for most or all of the stuff on current pre-order than we are?

Yes I DO realize that but it doesn't feel like that when you only make minimum wage. In addition there are far fewer discount retailers here (at least from my experience than there are available to you guys).

Regardless does anyone have any new pics or information on the other stuff to come to preorder this saturday?

Omg really? I had no idea, thanks so much.

This time a year ago that same Watch Captain would be £20. £14for the Commander, 3 for the sprue and 3 for hike.

3 years ago it would have been 14 for the model, 2 for the hike and 15 for an upgrade sprue in finecast that gives you enough to build 6 Marines, forcing you to buy a Tactical Squad, another Commander and another sprue just to make sure you aren't wasting the upgrades sitting in a bitzbox.

First off, the upgrade sprue is very similar to the Space Wolves, Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Dark Angels ones that came out a while ago. Considering that they are $16 a piece here, and that the Captain (Commander) kit is $26.50 I'll gladly pay $3.50 for extra for that kit.

Secondly, if I went down to a GW in the States (not that there is one nearby these days - Walden Galleria is long since closed) I would be paying more for it. $25USD is more like $32Cdn right now. $80US is over $100 Canadian.

Fair enough

To be frank I wasn't complaining so much about the current reduction in price overall trend or the repackaged deal savings, was just wondering why the difference seemed at face value so vastly different. But said curiosity has been abundantly fulfilled.

That all depends on whether I was going to buy another Captain model or not. For my money, that decade old kit is far more worth it than any of the other current Space Marine Captains that GW sells. With a couple of Sternguard and Vanguard Vet bits I can make him look right impressive.

Lol, I have so many of those captain kits that I use them as sgts for my squads now.

Still, I am super pumped. Will definitely be getting at least 1-2 of the terminator captain boxes since I am seriously lacking in terminator character models.

Also....I really REALLY want a wing of three corvus blackstars. I would never use them in a competitive game right now but it would be so much fun in a casual game to have them come in to support an ongoing battle. I would just be hearing flight of the valkyries the entire time.

People who stopped buying GW but wont stop bitching about it are the vegans of warhammer

I think I am going to use the Upgrade kit chest piece and helmet (the crested one) to signify my Watch Sergeants (except the rebuilt Zameon Gydrael, who will have a cloaked helmet). Maybe just the helmets. The chest pieces look really cool too, though. It would help separate the Watch Sergeants from the regular Veterans a little more. Maybe the chest piece, the cloaked back, and the helmet. I can't really decide.

@casvalremdeikun: you are going to have to do some cutting on the cloaked back to fit the upgrade chest to it...
i had the same thought last night
sadly, the neck guard of the cloaked back sticks out a little too far for the upgrade chest to just fit right on...
it will look cool after a bit of shaving, i think, since it will make the Sergeants stand out by not having the pouches on the chest...

my favorite new discovery is just how flared the lower leg armor is on the Veterans...
they really captured the look of Jes Goodwin's old drawing of the mkviii Marine
i am so happy with this new sprue!!!

Ah, noted. Not a difficult thing to fix with a file though. I haven't totally committed to the idea. The helmets are a must though. The crested top looks just too good. But I don't want the unique faceplate hidden behind the neckguard. I can probably make do with regular backs instead of capes. They will be unique enough with the chest piece and the helmet.
